since this thread is just "name a good soul LP" I will add Chuck Jackson on ABC, Whispers "Bingo", and most of Lamont Dozier's records.

Len Barry "Its that time of the year" must be one of the rarest, would think that everyone knows Richard's "left on roof of car" story.

Well for me I have been playing The Spellbinders and The Tempests at home today, but as great as they are, the LP that will always be mt favourite is the Motown Memories LP with 6 x 6, Helpless etc.

I put it on after the aforementioned two albums and this one still does it for me after over 40 years of listening to it.

One of my favourites; Alice Clark, 'Alice Clark' ( Mainstream Records )... The trouble with album collecting is that in many cases there are only one or two stand out tracks, but the Alice Clark is heavy on quality material.

Also enjoy two of the Terry Callier LP's.. 'What Color Is Love' ( Cadet ) and 'I Just Can't Help Myself' (Cadet ) .

Totally agree - Sweeter than sugar !!

Some great LPs listed The Artistics is a fave of mine , one which i still play more often than most is Al Wilsons Searching For The Dolphins even The Snake seems to make some sort of sense when listened to on the Lp. a great lp of mainly cover versions but brilliant non the less .

Surely Otis Clay's "The Only Way Is Up" LP was released, promoted and marketed in the early 80's in the US & Japan as a new, contemporary release even though certain tracks had previously been released on other labels several years earlier ... while the Sandra Wright LP was very obviously a compilation originating in the UK on Demon Records of previously released and newly discovered material , and it was clearly marketed as such , wasn't it ?

Not that any of that matters as far as the musical quality is concerned ... they are both great LPs of course !!!

In fact, and I've said it before on here several times, the only way to play out Otis Clay's "The Only Way Is Up" is off the said original LP because the sound quality is so unbelievably good, loud and clear, and it doesn't have the nasty hiss and jump at the start which most the 45's seem to have. And YES... it is absolutely OK to play the original LP ahead of the original 45 ... even at an OVO event !!!

I paid quite a bit of money for that on Japanese release from City Sounds. Much better quality than the 7"

strange how this album - despite having the same cover - has different tracks on the UK vs US copies. I had a sealed copy of the US copy for years I never opened because I had the UK copy and then by chance I noticed their version of 'Nothing Can Stop Me' (the Cissy Houston song) on the US copy!!!!

Apart from Cornelius Grant and (no doubt through the Van de Pitt Motown connection), the credits also boast input from Temp's Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams.Apparently they supported The Temps on tour.

This is by far the best Motown compilation imho. The other (earlier) Motown Memories volume 2 with Barbara McNair and R Dean Taylor on is a favourite too.

Excellent topic. I'm just starting to buy more LP's, they have really never interested me in the past for some reason. 45's will probably go in near future and I will collect solely LP's, some good recommendations here

Why shouldn't it be allowed, a superb album, plus isn't the fantastic ' Can't Stay Away' previously unreleased ?, always find it hard to believe some fans of soul music ( we are fans aren't we ) ignore albums, it's music all the same no matter the format, so many good album only tracks, plus an ever increasing amount of unreleased material being released via the 33rpm record, the Numero group consistently deliver the goods as do others, plus then we have a heritage of a good 45 plus years to draw on as well, glad to hear you are buying LP's, but why get rid of the 45's ?, enjoy both.

PS.. I loved Steve Plumbs LP only spots at Essence, so much that i followed his trail and had great fun a few years back playing for around 2 hours in Wakefield spinning either alternate LP versions of 45's or LP only tracks.

Some cracking compilations there Dave - I would like to see a separate listing for them - as much as I love them they are not 'proper' LPs conceived as a new distinct piece of work - like 'Greatest Hits' or 'Best Ofs', they should not be included either. IMHO of course.

I havent read all this thread, but someone might have mentioned those fabulous comps from the 8ts?

I remember thinking of the ten top Northern lps I'd want to get in the early 9ts, and went out and got them, but kent and soul supply LP's were pretty much all I could afford in the early to late 8ts
