I can't keep quiet about this any more. Don't people realise that the reason you can't sell records like that Chocolate Syrup 45 on Brown Dog or Lonette McKee on Sussex for £60  - and therefore have to keep re-listing them - is because they are all over the internet for £10 or much less?

 

I don't know how other people think, but from my perspective it completely undermines the integrity of the seller: every time I see something stupidly over-priced like that I ignore the rest of their sales, and any subsequent sales posts, because I assume that if they have anything I'm interested in, I'll be able to get it at a fraction of the price from my first google search.

 

As a sales strategy, it seems pretty flawed to me...

Ha ha, there's one particular seller who lists on a regular basis who is ALWAYS double the price of anywhere else, and they keep listing the same records week after week.

 

Like you, I stopped looking at these listings a long time ago.

Well let's think, where do they get these ridiculous prices from in the first place?

They copy them from someone else, or from a previous sale, or a price guide or online store.

The fact that the record is still there in whatever online store it's in, means nobody wants it at that price, therefore it must be too expensive.

Therefore, the idea is to undercut that price and everyone else too.

That's what I do, it must work, I've sold £thousands worth of records in the last 6 weeks, though I have had some fantastic quality stuff.

Oh and before anyone goes thinking I'm rich - every one was a commission sale...suits me though.

Need to drop my prices then 

funnily enough i left 2 copies of lonette and 1 of chocolate syrup in a shop last week for £2 each as I didn't want them for myself and couldn't be bothered with trying to sell them.

 

There's a sale today on here stating you won't find it cheaper anywhere else, despite it being 150% of the price a mint copy went for only last night, and it's on ebay every week.

Sellers offering house records for £20-30 cos they've been played at a soul do - Check discogs guys, they often start at 50p nowadays. You could do entire set of quality vocal tracks for under a tenner.

all records are worthless unless someone is willing to pay the asking price, something I think a seller like Pete understands and prices to sell

Trouble is, i put a record up for £75 the other day because there seems to be a lot of them around. Sold it straight away. But then saw one for £100  a few days later and that sold straight away, so now I'm thinking, shit I should of tried a hundred quid first.

Yeah I was amazed to see the Chelsea Wilson which I have plenty of copies of (for £8) at £12.50, for instance   Not as severe as some of his prices for new/recent releases but still in the 'in demand, out of stock everywhere else and hard to find now' bracket when they're still available with minimal googling (or at the underlined link )

It has got silly, and I have too agree I really tire of seeing the same listed at inflated prices every other day. What can you do though... Upto the MODS to take a view on this.

Juno is a tramp reissue isn't it? The original went for $35 in 2010. Google told me that - i've never heard of the record - although as it's 'unknown', that'll be why then

ive had people on here sell the those re issues as bona fide originals. one guy still had the cheek to keep the juno sticker on it and got very pissy when it got sent back.

As long as sellers stick within these rules then it's up to them if they want to re-list at same price for next twenty years.

 

However, there is no need for Sutty or others to keep their traps shut.

Pretty much what I was thinking too Pete. As a (irregular) seller at times would be happy at this rate. Listing fees and/or commissions etc on ebay/discogs eats up a fair few quid anyway over a few months.

Me too. I don't sell that often but I don't necessarily want something for nothing. I can see that it might to complicated logistically to set up, but I imagine it would be a sensible investment that would pay for any set-up costs quite quickly. The whole forum isn't just about sales either, so hopefully the fees charged would reflect that and would be quite reasonable.

 

I have to say though, that I've had a greater degree of satisfaction in both buying and selling on Soul Source than I have on ebay, discogs and any other site. Not that those are bad, just that it genuinely feels more like you're trading with people in a community on here.

 

Just don't get me started on that so called 'hassle free' site though...

That seller put that up on here. In fairness, I think he's selling an original but a) its not unknown and b) the last couple on ebay went for about $150.

there is a extra sales feature/system thats going live in the very near future

its a more formal means of selling/buying at first focusing on individual items for sale/offers

with the idea being that it will sit alongside the current sales setup

I will try and bring it up live in next couple of days and post more info as that happens

2. Quality - A fee would improve the quality of the sales on offer in the feature by discouraging poor quality sales posts (discourage repeated posts, dead stock or unrealistic pricing }

i see the point that its good for someone like yourself  thats put several lists out a week..but not for someone like myself that only sells a few bits from time to time.. ive done sellin stuff on ebay anyway.... its just gonna drive more sellers into the arms of the facebook pages

I'm still stuggling to understand why a collector would let someone else sell his records on forums ?

Either too busy or lazy to do em themselves ?

The info for any seller is out there now ,more than ever .

Just google a title and it throws up info on pricing ,without even having to know popsike or collectors frenzy or similar websites .

Not knocking what you do Pete,good luck with it and loing may it reign for you ,but if does baffle me .

Regards the actual thread ...i personally think that charging folk to sell on here should be for those who only use the site to sell and make no other valid contribution to the site ..i:e ,do not engage in any forum posts or share any knowledge ,but purely salesman .

High pricing in sales /repitive posts with same records is annoying ,but ive relisted and so have most ,but dont deliberately list O.T.T prices ...more a case of trying to get back no less than i payed in thr first place.

Some of us arent dealers ,but collectors trying to fund new wants ,which loosely means we are addicts who buy with our hearts rather than brains and can often be guilty of paying more in thr firdt place than a out and out seller,who will only buy at right price for profit .

Theres my contribution ...now to sort out some sales for much needed funds to pay my debts to sellers
