What lyrics most sum up the Northern or Modern soul scenes ?

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this has been done before, thought it might be interesting, and draw a wide range of responses ? Time will tell ! For me there are loads of lyrics that epitomise the joy, sadness, excitement and energy of the scene. I, like so many, was dragged along to my first allnighter by a friend. I was going to local clubs, loving Tamla and the better Disco and Funk stuff in the early 70's and he said I know this banging place where they play the good stuff all night. The start of a 40 year love affair !

So I'm kicking this off with a tune that I think will be divisive, but I love it, I can still see the floor at the Ritz bouncing as everyone exploded onto it when the first bars of this kicked off... Flaming Emeralds - Have some everybody.

If the music makes you feel good,

Next time you ought to bring a friend,

Just tell 'em where the music takes you,

You come and you'll be there with them

The Valentines - or Wilma Redding 'There Is A Place' which is a British Pye recording and lyrically SO about our sort of scene it must've been written about it (it's a bit tacky though - think Dave Macaleer had something to do with it????)... Or of course Backstreet.

Walk right on in
Stretch out your arms
Let the lovelight shine
On my soul, baby, and
Let love come running in

You know that I needed you
I've needed you a long, long time
My pride is too much for me, baby
And I'm about to lose my mind

[Chorus:]
Walk right on in
Let your love come running in
Open the door to your heart, baby
Open the door to your heart
Open the door to your heart
And let love come running in
Let your love come running in

Let it flow like the river
Let it shine like the light
Take all my mind and soul, baby
Why don't you give it sight

I'm trying to
Keep from loving you
And I've been loving you
A little too long

Darling, darling
You've been so sweet to me
That's what keeps my
Love so strong

[Chorus:]

I need you to stand by me
Let your love come running in
Let it flow like the river...

So did I but I got effing yank spellcheck confusing the issue - have to watch that as one of my biggest clients makes all the chemicals for dry rot etc treatment.

Mr Laskey's 'Welfare Cheese' would be a good one for a few venues.

Hope you and yours are doing well.

Guest Dave Turner

I'm with Shinehead on this one.
Richard Temple - That Beatin' Rhythm and I'd also add Major Lance - The Beat

Define for me what the traditional Northern scene was all about.
