mr. searling....because, believe it or not...this man has took a back seat, stood in the shade and watched everyone else take centre stage for many years now, but unbeknownst to us all, he's just kidding!....THE MAN has STILL got the tunes and thats with reference many times ( tongue in cheek ) to whats lurking in his garage...he pulled a box of spellbinding tunes to the table at the dunkenhalgh yesterday that would knock many into a cocked hat...he's STILL got the charisma and magnetism to get people's attention and spell it out to them,...just like he did at wigan all those years ago...so you can produce a list as long as your arm....and i say that with the greatest respect to the whole panorama of djs i have got see see, listen to & befriend...all unique and justified in their own appeal...but, people.......richard can quite simply turn it on, when he wants...the man is a hero & a legend...and those are words not to be taken lightly...put him at the top of the list of any respected all-nighter and he will deliver the goods in spades! .

Taking nothing away from the merits of Russ's aforementioned list, I couldn't agree more.

Richard has always been in a league of his own.

Presentation skills, mic use, timing, professionalism, great ears and excellent taste.

Whether he'd want to do more at Allnighters is another thing, but certainly his 'quality approach' has been missed for many years (IMO).

Are you kidding? Dave Abbott, Tim Smithers, Des Parker, to name but three. You can't get much more up front.

I'd just like to see guest DJs on at decent times in the middle of the night instead of at the start or stuck on the end. That would make a big difference.

isnt this just a re-doing of what comes up on a yearly basis entitled "who is your favourite mate -sorry- DJ on the scene ?" ... if yes we had it for this year already, hadnt we ?

would be much more interesting if people would add an explanation to their choices...if I would live in the UK I would for example say sth along the lines like

-cause is not only not playing the same old same old but also puts together interesting, good sets

- cause they knwo what they do, do their very own thing (behind the decks) and are what this Soul thing needs ..if it wants a future

No it isnt Marc, I specifically said ALLNIGHTERS, not soul nights, Alldayers, Sunday Sessions, Weekenders or ya best mates front room.....ALLNIGHTERS. There are some spanking DJ's who are woefully neglected when it comes to ALLNIGHTERS IMHO.

I think it very much depends upon the Allnighter, but I know of 2 who generally use the guests in the first/early slots. I know Ady at the 100 Club generally will give 2 slots, one earlier one later, always good slots tho.

Just to reiterate aswell, a DJ thats works well at a Nighter, might not be as well received at a Soul Night or other event & vice versa, I would deffo say at the very least that they would be playing slightly different types of set.....hence my initial question.

Whilst I have the utmost respect for RS, its difficult to comment on how he would be received at an Allnighter in this day & age. I may be wrong, but Richard hasnt DJ'd at a contemporary Allnighter since the Ritz & the 100 Club back in the 9ts. I dont count the weekenders or infrequent oldies only Nighters, as it would hardly stretch the guy.

Whilst I do not doubt RS still has a lot of things that would be of interest to the regular Nighter crowd, I would love to see him at the 100 Club, Lifeline or Radcliffe maybe dropping exclusives & rareities, amongst other things....not sure this will ever happen, so hypothetical really.

He did 2 Nighters in the 9ts & did blinding sets, Butch on the same night & both shall we say had a sense of occasion, not sure if one was an anniversary, I didnt think it was, but could be wrong...Ady should deffo get him down again....the Scotland V's England Nighters were brilliant too....

thats a fair comment russ, as would anyone else's be on here...airing on the side of caution perhaps with wistful optimism thrown in?...i'd hold on to your hats everybody because, if you've not been paying attention, he is quietly and very inconspicously going about putting together an awe-inspiring playbox, which was witnessed by many at the dunk on sunday...but i can assure you, knowing the man as i do...it isnt stopping there...he's always had it in the blood...he's always been completely wired to the scene....he knows what the movers & shakers are...and, if he hasn't already got it, he's sniffing out the acutely rare and quality tunes that he has always been internationally known for....he's chasing down a lot of stuff that he originally sold ( i presume he means things that he rashly sold back in the day ). dont be surprised to see him fronting venues that you never dreamed he would appear at...this man is flexing his muscles again....remember this:...HE was the backbone of the casino in its heyday...with john anderson as an outlet for groundbreaking music and richard's capacity for, not only mesmerising but influencing many subsequent headline djs of today, he drove that monolith of northern soul forward with profound credibility, whilst at its helm, preaching quality over innanely, adverse pop dogma that was being pedalled as soul.

I kinda agree with you Phil, but it isnt neccessarily just about 6ts, if you throw some good 7ts & dare I say other decades in too, plus intelligent reactivations n rareities, with the unquestionable taste of these guys we could be in for a treat - plus these guys are the 'taste makers', so who knows what else will get thrown into the mix, s'long as its Rare Soul with the X Factor, aimed at the Allnighter dance floor then Im excited....whilst I dont think either of these guys needs 'competiton' to bring out thier best, it wont harm to have RS back in the fold of the contemporary Nighter scene, plus It might encourage those that are a little nostalgic shall we say, to test the water at more diverse events boosting the numbers....

As this thread seems to be alot about Richard Searling,

It begs the questions

1) Which reputable (There aren't many about) allnighters will he DJ at? also will those promoters employ him?

2) Will he just be a 'flash in the pan' to bring in soul night punters who then bugger off at 2 o'clock?

3) Will he just be confined to 'oldies' style allnighters (Lots of them about)?

First daft coment is......."they,ve all got great collections".....err how do we know.....there a few mentioned that sold their records...so how can they have good collections.

Secondly anyone mentioned to dj at a nighter should really be a nighter person ......otherwise they just f**k up regardless of what tunes they have (ya gotta know how these places tick).....and a lot of dj,s just don,t and whats more don,t seem to care!

Richard Serling.....oldies only!!......he couldn,t hack it at some nighters full stop.......it,s about playing a set thats right for the club in question (to do this i,m afraid you have to attend said place).....my fav venue only has a problem when someone is invited who never attends....to a man most always get it wrong because they work from "what they think is right,not what they know is right"...so Richard Serling wherever he played (except big oldies doo's) would not have a clue...which = wrong set
