and how come the only records he dances to are his own set...never anyone elses...as i,ve said have nowt against the fella ,but action speak louder than words and l observe what l see not always what people tell us.

You obviously need to get out more then 

right on adam!,...if we broaden the topic, it's all too familiar isn't it?...we're in the "not good enough for the casino but just right for totw" zone...because times and taste's change and anything like say, george smith or bobby hutton....maybe got spun at station road by whoever because they though the records were great,...they bombed..then another dj comes along, 3 years later at stafford, played the same tunes but this time they're bang on the money....nobody was arguing then about who's taking the credit?...my just being hypothetical.....also time marches on, we get older and younger generations come along who have a feel for the tunes that we probably dismissed a bit to readily....there will always be someone though, who has a persistent chip on their shoulder about it. what's ever been wrong with the big picture?, the fact THAT after a large proportion of OUR generation's lifetime's....WE ARE STILL ON A LEARNING CURVE...THAT IS WHY THE SCENE IS SO INSPIRING AND STILL EVOLVING...THAT IS WHY THE SCENE WILL NEVER DIE, BUT WILL ALWAYS "LIVE LONG & PROSPER" ...go eulogize.

As for who cares who played what first, many do, I for one like to see respect and credit where it is due.

Ref Sean - He D.Jed for me a few times in the early 90's at The Embankment Club, and straight away I recognised his genuine passion for the music. Back then he mainly played crossover (Que Terry! he he) What Sean has 'developed' into is a D.J is one that usually has a 'job to do' and he does that 'job' very well. I have had 'heavy' conversations with him about this - He loves 'doing what he does', but would sometimes like to 'play from the heart'. This is what he said to me when I tried to book him for 'Silks' to do just that - "Len, I'm gutted, I'm booked elsewhere that night - I long to D.J at a venue like 'Silks' where I can play exactly what I want"

 

So, reflecting on this thread, I actually understand Terry's views, but I believe Sean is giving people what they want - So can anyone really knock him for that?

 

One last thing - Sean has never taken credit for anything anyone else has done, I have often heard him give credit to someone on the mike about records, or reiterating facts of interest about someone in the hall to everyone, maybe about someone who has influenced him, or written a book (whatever) This is done genuinely. Sean knows the position he is in, and he works hard at it - So a well done for that is in order.

P.s - I often compare 'The Soul Scene' to 'The Comedy Scene' - There are many sh*te comedians that even make it to Telly, that I can't stand (often ripping other Comedians material, or simply not funny) - But the masses love em (This is not aimed at you Sean xxx)

You highlighted the two tunes in question to everyone first, nobody else. You said they were big BURNLEY tunes at the time it was being cold an oldies venue. All that's been said is that they were played in other clubs before being big at Burnley, in response to your post. Did they go down well at those other venues? i dont know because i wasn't there, and if you werent there either then saying they didnt work is incorrect.

 

Nobody has said Sean is claiming credit for these 2 records our of his 2hrs of DJing, nobody is giving him credit for playing these two records (why would they; according to you they don't work anywhere other than Burnley). It seems its just you making everyone aware Sean didnt make them big.

I'm ignorant as to the history of tunes etc. It has served me well. My being in a bubble as such for the first 25 years of the scene meant when I became active in 1993...it was all 'new' apart from 100 obvious tunes from the Wigan/Torch and disco era. Any tune I heard....that got me as 'Northern Soul'....was up for playing. BUT...I travelled around the UK. Not many have done that....or hadn't. The 'big names' did it all through the 70's....others came thru their era and carried it on into the 80's and 90's. Folk like myself...Shifty....Len....and the Sean's...Russ's of this world came thru in the 90's......with a 'hybrid' approach of all that had gone before....and been discovered since.

 

When I got involved...the discussion was are u a 60's or 70's Soulie!!?? Then over the decade it went to 60's/70's 'newies' or oldies Soulie!!?? I played all.....but at different venues I did different things! I could play a set in Daventry...go up to Oldham....swop 8 records out of the set......then go onto Blackburn A/N and play perhaps 6 of the 40 odd i'd played earlier! Therefore....those who heard me up t'north....will tell you one thing about the tunes I played....and then down Souf....they'll say I played a different tune/s. The scene is 'different' around venues and locations I found...and therefore I played different at each......which is wot being a DJ was from my perspective!  A record I played at say the 100 Club...I may not have played at Blackburn....the 2 biggest venues with 'hard core' Qdos back in the 90's. At my own Soul Night in Cambridge which ran monthly for 5 years non-stop.....I played stuff I never played anywhere else.....! So who played what where...can get 'lost' in all that maneuvering!!x

 

We as Soulies and DJs...are unique...music is 'personal'. If that's respected and appreciated by all...then these he said she saids wouldn't be so important...would they?x

I heard Richard Berry Have Love Will Travel around a mates house who had an amazing collection....but never spun it anywhere! I got a copy...played it '93 around Cambridge way.....'old school' told me it was Rock N Roll....yet I took it up to Manchester/Stockport and everybody loved it! 25 years later it's become the longest running advert using the tune via Liverpool & Victoria ads...and derivatives of it! The 4 Tracks...Like My Love For You....played it at Blackburn 94'....absolutely BOMBED first time out!!! 100 Club creamed it the following week!! Never played it at Blackburn again! So...what a DJ plays may not be 'what they are about'....! I played Mel Torme Coming Home Baby from '93'-99 and was the most consistent record I played nationally.....because the ex Mrs liked it! Same with 'That's My Girl Dee Clark....I got 'known' for them.....but they weren't 'my' choices!!!!hehe!!x

I heard Fats Domino 'If You Don't Know What Love Is' on a tape on a Thursday....found it in a junk shop Friday.....played it first time at 100 Club Saturday..........kicked off with it.....cos it wos me tune of the week...it went ballistic...yet never played it anywhere ever again as I swopped it at the 100 Club that night!!! But I was the first to play it there....possibly the last??!hehe!x Who knew that?...does it matter? I don;t think so....unless it was theeee only copy or discovered on an acetate or summink etc. Had it been played before in the 70's??....nobody has ever said so! But it got played after I played it at gigs I recall! There's possibly 20+ records I spun for the first time at All Nighters....but were never played again! Have they been brought back...been re-discovered....20 years later??? I don't go to gigs to find out! But....i'm sure i'd hear summink considered 'new'...yet I've heard it played...or played it meself.....at some point in the past 35 years that i've been listening!x

 

Choice is good....and I like 'difference' and acknowledge innovation and recognise 'firsts' always.....but am chilled with it all whoevers playing 'the' tune...and recommend it to all!!x

If Sean had played those two sets at Burnley, they would have gone down a storm and you'd be banging on about how he raised his game and got into the proper 'Burnley sound' and how only Burnley gets it right along with your usual cr*p.

Suprised to see the Sammy Davis...from.the UK film Salt and pepper with George Peppard....groovy go go.music.Also another UK thing The Deltones Gimme Some Lovin on UK Columbia..version of the Spencer Davis group.Sean is a genuine enthusiastic deejay and probably doesn't go anywhere as a punter as he is booked every weekend.I would say a lot of this stuff is mod slanted.

Sean has been to the last two Lifelines as a punter and as far as I know enjoyed both nights.

Can't believe Searling ever played the Sammy Davis track Adam.....if only for the fact that halfway through he shouts something like 'Cor Blimey' or similar....just needs an 'Awright guvnor' and a 'Leave it out' and the shandy drinking southerners will be kicking heels mid air and dancing on rooftops with a chimney brush in their hands...

Seans a decent guy, who is at least trying to play something different in his sets regardless of such online bun fights. 

 

He turned up at the Pow Wow Nighter as a punter and stayed til the end, and as Chalky says, he was present at Lifeline last weekend, so can only presume he is attending other venues when not DJing.

 

That Adam Topping's a tw&t mind, boring as fcuk and breath smells like Satans arse....so feel free to give him an internet fisting any day of the week.     ;o)

Well said mate, i stopped going to regular oldies nites as i could sing allong to all of them and memorised every word. todays scene is a breath of fresh air thousands of new tunes over the last 10 yrs +

i think sean's first set was quite up front, different to the sean i used to know, and yes he has allways been a good DJ as he knows how to work a crowd after fronting up to a few hundred hungry RAF grunts, a bunch of soulies is no problem.

I say keep it up and hope to probbally go and hear a simmilar set by him.

Encapsulates the enigma of uk culture - everyone hates each other, the better you are the more people hate you,we focus more on what we dont like than what we do like, we nit pick and analyse and stomp the fun out of everything, our shit nights are packed and our good nights are empty, we have more djs than punters, we generally hate everything and everyone who falls outside of our obsessively tuned taste structures, we're generally negative...

Would be ashamed if we hadn't been setting the standards in music appreciation for 50 years ;-)
