I've always found it impossible to choose a favourite soul record (or even a top ten) that doesn't change on a daily basis.

But what about a favourite album? is chosing a standout album any easier?

So what's your favourite that fits the following..

Consistent over all the tracks, a standout is a bonus not a necessity

Format immaterial, viny or CD

From any soul genre

From any era

Rarity irrelevent

Kev

And before anybody asks, no you cant have a 'Best of....' compilation

Floorshakers - Kent LP

Not an album fan then Pete?

Ooops forgot to post mine

Bobby Womack - The Poet

No fillers, contains 'So Many Sides Of You' and came out at just the right time.

Kev

natural four/good vibes/abc all round good lp something for everyone.

Not an album fan then Pete?

Well it says 'soul' album and I haven't got a favourite soul artist or soul album so I went for a compilation.

Friction - The Soul Children (Stax)

Not a bad track on it.

If you're tempted to buy it don't buy the UK pressing as it's sonically far inferior to the US one.

Extension of a man - Donny Hathaway - Atco.

very closely followed by,

California Sunset - The Originals - Tamla Motown.

What's going on - Marvin Gaye - Tamla Motown.

Sam Dees - The show must go on - Atlantic.

Chapter 8 - This Love's For real-Beverly Glenn

Produced by the genius Micheal J Powell

Nice call Petebanger!!!

I always thought Beverly Glen LPs were the buisness!!!

Remember talking to Terry Jones once, in the Spread Eagle Shoredich circa Christmas 87, and saying "Don't forget Terry Beverly Glenn comes but once a year"!

Cheers Paco

Beverly Glen churned out some great stuff-

Anita Baker-The Songstress another of my fave albums

Johnnie Taylor

Bobby Womack

Wasn't there something dodgy about the owner of Beverly Glen??

A gangster or something like that?

Cheers

Pete

Well today my favourite is

LAURA NYRO - ELI AND THE THIRTEENTH CONFESSION

wonderful soulful album - but not soul as such

Wasn't there something dodgy about the owner of Beverly Glen??

A gangster or something like that

Beverly Glen was owned by Otis Smith (no, not that one!)

Anita Baker famously credited one of her songs on the ''Rapture" LP to her memories of him, it was called "Watch Your Step"

Cheers Paul

if it has to be soul ....alice clark on mainstream

if not ..beach boys "pet sounds"

A real grueller this one, I'm afraid...

Fighting it out for the Guys....

Lou Courtney "I'm In Need Of Love"

Bobby Womack "Lookin For A Love Again"

And a Catfight for the ladies.......

Sandra Wright "Wounded Woman"

Millie Jackson "Caught Up" Vols 1 & 2

They've been fighting it out for years, in my head, and I still can't decide on a clear winner!

Worse still, there are dozens of other strong contenders.

Alan :thumbsup::P . No point in posting mine as you have done it !

Whats Going On, got to be the greatest, so soulful, political,angry,beautiful,timeless...

Tashan-On The Horizon. always think of it as a 'Whats Going On' for late 80's/ early 90's.

Too many to mention, but a few i like are Les McCann "Plays the Hits" on Limelight, Odyysey 5 "First Time Around" on BRC, Ripple Blast Singers "Funny Girl ala Soul" on Power, Chris Bartley "The Sweetest Thing This Side Of Heaven" on Vando and lastly Terry Callier "I Just Can't Help Myself" on Cadet.
