The problem with the critics of Thatcher is that they always pick on the wrong things to criticise. Do we really want our children to leave school and get a job working underground? I grew up in Durham City but most of my friends lived in pit villages round about and I spent a lot of time in them and frankly, they were all dives. Her lasting legacy is that everything is now about her favourite son - Blairs 3 favourite things in the world: jobs, the economy, childcare. In other words, everythin

It all started back in 2011 I got a phone call from Nige Brown telling me he heard a sound bite on ebay of a record he thought had something special and he would like my opinion on it before he set his bid . The record was Teri Mathews "round and Round" on the Preview label. Nige valued my thoughts on the subject as he knew my opinion would be an honest one , I don't suffer records that don't hit the mark and I say if I think they are not very good. Anyway I heard this sound bite and I was

Roots Of Rhythm Blog Posted by NASHEE, 30 June 2007 ROOTS OF RHYTHM....23rd June 2007 The Roots of Rhythm event, was billed, rightly so, as UNMISSABLE....and bugger me...thats exactly what it was. The Journey to the event for us started at 9am on Saturday morning. Bob Morrris picked us up and whisked us off via the m6...m5, to Merv's home. As per usual the hospitality offered by Merv & Shell was second to none. Jodie and Micky were already there, records were spinning, an

Indie record label, Continued Sound, announces its first 7" vinyl release with the reissue of an unspeakably rare rock and soul-tinged single from 1973 by Kip Carmen, a Native American R&B artist from Huntington, New York. The record features two original songs ("That's Enough For Me" and "Loving in the Morning") recorded in NYC with veteran producer Bob Morgan (known for his work with Bobby Vinton and Marcos Valle) shortly before Kip signed with Hi Records in Memphis. 6 Whitworth Street - The Birthplace of Northern Soul Introduction This book is about the Northern Soul years of the Twisted Wheel Club, at its Whitworth Street location. It is about how one little basement club, in Manchester, created a worldwide music phenomenon. It attempts to follow the evolution of Black music at the club from Blues through to R&B, Mod, Soul to Northern Soul. Although the club went through different phases of Black music the lines were blurred and they were neve

Florence Alabama Music Enterprises, or simply FAME, the world-renowned recording studio and record label owned by Rick Hall in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It produced a wealth of hit records for many artists and was instrumental in creating the sound of Muscle Shoals. As well as the hits the studio and label also had an amazing amount of material that didn’t make the charts or was simply left in the can. However Ace Records struck a deal to go through the vaults and subsequently many trac

THE NIGEL SHAW CHARITY ALL DAYER - BURTON BELVERDERE CLUB BURTON-ON-TRENT SAT 24 NOV 07 Over 8 months ago in conversation with Dave"Soulful Kinda" Rimmer he mentioned about doing another All Dayer that the late Nigel Shaw had organised at Weston Super Mare's Great Atlantic Hotel in May 2006 which turned out to be a roaring success and Nigel was so proud of this event. No Tulips from Amsterdam, but a whole lot of soul. When I asked on Soul Source for the dates of European Soul nights, Jos from the Amsterdam Soul Club was the only person who replied. As I'd never been to Amsterdam before I soon arranged a date with Jos, and that date was the 19th November. So here's the lookback: In the intervening weeks I had offered my services as a DJ for the night and Jos had offered to provide me with overnight accommodation, so I was all set for a weekend in Amsterdam.

An old article from the late 70s. Originally in a fanzine called North Wales Soul Review in late 70s and republished in Soul Notes Fanzine 20 or so years later on North Wales Soul Review The following are extracts taken from issue No. 1 of the North Wales Soul Review which dates from January 1979. We think that this is the only issue that was produced, but if anyone has any other issues or can give us some background information on this fanzine please let us know. Thanks to Brian Rae f

As the years past it seems more and more archival material is becoming available online, local papers just being one available source for looking back. The British Newspaper archive being just one current source, be a bit wary as once you start digging the hours may fly past. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ Used the North Wales Soul Club as an example as it did play a part in my own soul youth, while just a 13 year old kid at the time of the article, memories of

Northern Essence edited by Pete Coulson - Review 1999 site note originally up in 1999 Well here you go, yet another classy fanzine that s dropped thru my letterbox. All I can say is that the amount of worthwhile fanzines/mags dedicated to soul music is awe inspiring, the time and effort that must go into them must be enormous. (not just taking easy way out if I got a shite one I would say!). Each one I've ever read has its own style and format but all achieve same results a f*cking goo

All 3 rooms saw heavy dance floor action, with an enthusiastic up-for-it crowd from the start dripping sweat and an electric atmosphere that filled the building. Even the fact that the Main Bar was shut due to refurbishment, resulting in the SG6 Bar being used as the main bar and a temporary bar set up in the Mojo Room, didn't dampen the spirits. Everyone received a free woven anniversary patch and a raffle ticket as they walked through the door and the usual warm greeting from the Sinister Sist
