Pete Waterman Northern Soul

i dont think its a case of people not handling others with different views mike.....for instance in the thread on what tune do you not like to hear played out i posted another shout for 'just loving you' and was told i knew nothing about music, was mentally retarded and probably had a lighthouse cd in my collection..now you may laugh but hardly constructive debate and as i didnt know the poster it wasnt banter....

err hang on dean, thats more like personal abuse rather than "constant negativity" and while am sure not happy with such, I certainly wouldnt be, there is a proven site mechanism for dealing with such matters

I don't really get what bringing it up has got to do with your criticisms of constant negativity , a different subject surely ?

i agree a forum would be boring if we all thought the same..its just it seems to me whenever anyone 'outside' the scene trys to do or say anything that may have something to do with northern soul they are almost automatically shot down ....amy whinehouse recording a soul album...duffy using northern soul dancers in a video....the soul boy FICTIONAL FILM NOT A DOCUMENTARY ...paul o grady, pete waterman or anybody else famous 'promoting' and speaking highly remember of the uk soul scene....and sadly some of these ARE the most popular threads (except ovo/boots ofcourse!) and that kinda proves my point i think.....

dean

on the other hand if you go back and read the threads you mention you will also read plenty of people also posting comments in favour of such (ok maybe not so much in some)

same as this thread

am sure that if someone could be bothered to total the amount of different viewpoints posted in this thread,it will show that your view that this is some sort of "son of satan" thread is flawed

I will be watching and listening, I suppose it's up to the individual and how they feel about things portrayed.

I will say one thing, I have a lot of time for anybody on the scene, sometimes during discussions we may make mistakes, we misinterpret happenings, dates, recording artists etc. We ain't all perfect!

But........

If you meet me on a night out and talk p*sh about something of which you only dipped your toes in, you'll be found out.

Have met some bullsh*tters in my time, you can smell them a mile, usually the ones that got thousands of records that are worth a fortune in the loft but never mingled or dj'ed.

ps not implying that PW is bullsh*tting about his past, lets face it........recent cock ups from interviews tell their own tale, but surely he had his limelight on the scene. Why chose now to open the door again?

He had ample opportunity in the lean years or even with Stuart Macaroni

Just a view, please don't ban me if i disagree :

maybe it is abuse but its still a negative attitude in my eyes to my opinion that a certain record is played too much and not too my taste rather than positive debate about that subject ...its the kind of thread which would make people stop using a forum and it happened to me which is why i brought it up....and ive often seen you remove posts because they are negative ,abusive or whatever you want to call it

as far as how many posts are positive or negative then yes maybe there are more positive than negative so maybe 'constant' was the wrong word....maybe i should have said that i wasnt surprised pw was getting a slating from some on here for daring to say anything about northern ...which is really my point...why do some people on here think its a bad thing that a famous person is speaking about northern?...

OK, very few covers then.... But AFAIK that wasn't a single release was it? Granted her first one was a PW produced version of Little Eva's seminal cheese classic, but that hardly bothers the NS community, does it?

Not really being a Kylie fan though, I bow to your superior knowledge...

I'm sure I heard the producers of TWPYB on the radio (R Searling?) once, and it wasn't Stock Aitken & Waterman.

Met him a few times ! really nice bloke who was there, me and bruce doyle used to meet him quite regulary on the train back from an allnighter that we had been to. He was returning to london from his train thing! had some great chats and laughs.

look forward to the radio 2 programme later.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone promoting Northern Soul, whoever they are, providing their facts are accurate.

Just listened to PW on Radio 6 where he played Tainted Love, Unsatisfied and If you Ask Me.

Unfortunately the Unsatisfied sounded like the 90s Ian Levine remake where unfortunately Lou can't hit the notes at the end.

He also stated that when he "found" Robert Knight, it was on a country label, "Wand."

He also inferred that NS fans live in a time-warp and it's more about the people than the music if I remember it correctly.

Hope the doc is more factually accurate!

Indeed and so why is he talking at all then - because he is a celebrity, that is the only reason - there was a time when most people would have baulked at such bollocks but seems things have changed...

Its a set formula i guess to have the likes of PW on the show, good heavens, imagine a wheeling out a normal person onto the BBC couch, the viewers would run for the off button, they did allow Elaine the odd word  but then back to Pete.. Thats the way the promo game goes and i should know from experience..

Mr Waterman and his comments about Jackie Wilson, no problem with that if its his true view, not one i share but we all have different ears i guess... :D

Is PW actually in touch with todays scene, its ok having a love for the music and talking about that but when was the last time he actually set foot in an actual venue ?? just comes accross to me that he is someone that is grabbing a bit of limelight off the back of a scene he was once involved in many moons ago and isnt really dojng himself any favours with his out of touch comments, hey ho or is it Ho Ho Ho :D

on a serious note the PW Northern Soul xmas CD will be in all good book shops Friday :hatsoff2:

Well been quiet on the subject of P.W. but take it from someone who knows, it's his talking and his bullshit that has got him where he is today from a gobby dj who used to do the kids disco's and was into pure pop music.

He knew jack S--t about the N/S or Soul scene and only got into the knowledge of it by playing his fellow dj's records, but thats another story all in all just another star chaser.

cheers Ruff

Well my expectations are low, yet to be impressed with any mainstream broadcast about Northern Soul, in 40 odd years, the writing was on the wall with 'This England' and it's no better today, throw Pete Waterman into the mix & that compounds it for me, hope I wrong.

I do remain hopeful with the Elaine Constantine thing though.

Aid.

Back in the day there were many minor celebs who tried to associate themselves to the scene like Mick Hucknall Mark Almond Terry Christian and now a days people like Paul O'Grady Mark Radcliffe i think Paul Ross and Johnny Vaughn and several others .There is enough people on here

to say weather they saw any of them or even went with them to a nighter The only person of any minor fame i saw was Andy Peebles who then was a DJ on Piccadilly radio he used to come and sit with the DJ's on the stage at the Casino can't remember if they let him do a set though Another name that springs to mind is Kevin Rowland but he was Cleethorpes and i never got down there !

The thing with P W is he does seem to come out with some Bizzarre observations , that nobody else seems to remember ? :g:

Nothing against Mr Waterman seems a decent enough bloke but it's all this E By Gum, whippets, flat cap there's trouble at mill bollocks that makes me chuckle, more the case of wheel out a celeb to give it cred which has always been the case, he may have rubbed shoulders with the music good on him and he may have a passion for it but this almost tounge in cheek dancing miners it's rough up North ethic is not really needed is it? Elaine was great.

yep a few peeps that have tickled their toes in the Soul scene deep waters, none actively on the scene and aint been for years just like PW but i bet everyone and anyone that is a a or z list celeb was given the chance to appear on tv to talk about the scene they would but would they be talking about the scene when they knew it or the scene that it is today, i wasnt there back in the day so have no idea except what i read or hear but i think todays scene is slightly different to when WC was open, could be wrong but im guessing right i thinks, talk about yesteryear nothing wrong with that what so ever but to commnet on todays scene when you aint really got a clue is when its a tad shite

I just watched it and they did pretty good in my opinion !! After all a small feature on the new film with only a little time but well presented. I have to say PW and Ellaine came accross quite well and in comparrison to Paul o'grady it's miles appart on the cheesy scale !!!!

Maybe because i got more or less all my pearly whites with a shade of grey :D still in place, I found the joke quite funny. Well done !!!!

I agree it was a shame Elaine didn't get to say more, but was it really that bad? I've just watched it again and to be honest PW does actually say some decent things about the scene that are true! It IS all about the passion for the music - isn't it? Why just pick up on the one or two "jokey" lines and slate the whole thing? Some of the people at Wigan WERE miners, so what, there were bus drivers, shop assistants, accountants, would you all still be having a go if he'd mentioned them instead?

As I said before, if it gets just one person to look into this music of ours, and maybe go to a venue or two, then stick with it, it's been a good thing surely.

Haven't read the whole of the thread so not sure if people are, or aren't getting their knickers in a twist, but I was late for work this morning because I watched it, was is worth it?? Hell yes!!!

I thought PW came over extremely well & I howled at his false teeth comment (still chuckling when I think about it)

I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over it, mock it, or dissect it. My life's too short

Well done BBC !!

Ali x

ps it was great apologising to my boss for my lateness, blamed it on Northern Soul, something I've never owned up to before especially on a Monday morning ;o) Right, better sign off, I have some time to make up x

well he said a couple of stupid things and said a few true things as expected really....but i think the type of youngster who will actually sit up and listen to northern wont be bothered with what pw says...and thats type we want...those that arent gonna bother about the piss taking just like we didnt/dont.....yes shame we didnt hear more from elaine but im sure she would agree all publicity for the film is good publicity....

surely its better than no body in the media ever talking about northern at all?....if you keep it to yourself in 20 years time it will be gone....with more youngsters who will be bitten like us for life it might be still about...and you never know we might get some of our money back on our vinyl too!

dean

ps and ofcourse it might also get a few more out of the living rooms who havnt danced for years
