New Discoveries 6ts/7ts Northern & Rare Soul:

Ok, we have plenty of talk about new discoveries, so what about a discussion on recent discoveries or the lack of them...shall we say over the last 2 years ?.

Have all the good 6ts/7ts dried up, or are there still plenty out there, & just needs someone to be in a position to expose them properly.

'All the good 6ts tunes have been discovered' -This was the main driving force behind Stafford & the DJ team that went about proving that statement wrong....we all look back on Stafford as an iconic venue, breaking masses of new tunes & breaking the mould, but there really was an air that the 'good' records had been already discovered, prior to the Top of the World & also the legenday 100 Club Nighters -

So c'mon Soul Sourcers, tell us about ya new discoveries or new discoveries that are being played at your fave venue or by your fave DJ....there are no restrictions on rariety, just good soulful dance records that fit the Northern/Rare Soul criteria....

I do agree that its pretty rare seen a few on ebay but not any huge amounts.

I agree it is pretty rare and like you seen them go through ebay. Think the last one was around $700?? It has been around some while but not widely known outside collectors.

Again, the JT Carter record has been collected for about twenty five years. This is the b-side of Closer To Your Heart and is probably even worse.

Do you know if this got a 45 release in the US? Have only ever seen the NZ issue.

I think this has all the ingredients to be a popular all nighter record.

pretty hard to find as well.

I have been spinning the sun & rain over a year in Hamburg + @ hip city once and it went down very well everytime !!!! If ya spin it to an open minded crowd with some known northern with a similar tempo it works a treat. But as always newish tunes have to be mixed in quite nicely in order to work....

But for me a current biggie is this marc Forrest spin altough he has been spinning it for some time !!!!!

and lots of stuff played at the last Hip City Anniversary !!!!

cheers frank , glad you lilke it...if your reaction at the anniversary was anything to go by I had indeed a feeling you would ;) first played it out 2004 or ´05 in Hamburg at the mandarin kasino when I was guesting there together with butch. just sort of re-activated it of lately ;)

I would add that one prominent DJ has already PM'd me two very good tunes that were unknown to me, so just for that alone it has been worth while.

Unknown to who Russ? a band of 100 collectors, who have, 'the knowledge' or to the general soul public, I'm trying not to be perdantic but with so few sounds making it through into the larger halls nowadays and the rare scene suffering from numbers issues, are we talking something that might actually break through into greater spheres?

I quite agree in principal Ian although for the best part of 10 years prior to this being unearthed there was not much "released material" that grabbed the boll*cks so tightly... and it's been a good 9-10 years since it's first play. On that basis is this the most important / best / newest 60's discovery to come out of a 20 year period. If so, boy has that well gone dry

Here's on i've been playing for a while.Not totally unknown,but near.

More than the last 2 years but Butch's Mighty Lovers cu is the best record of the 21st century for me.

If you havent heard this you seriously need to put it on your bucket list!

I really dont know if this is unknown or not, wouldnt suggest it is an unknown but everytime I play it, it keeps the dancefloor filled and people always ask me what it is and who its by and when I've asked some others about it they dont know it. So I would say its lesser known, up here anyway. I like it.

Just reflecting on Sean's 3 above. I don't mean this in any way dismissive of the thread as I've enjoyed going through the tunes but I think the majority of Kent Select releases fit the bill of the original thread.

I think you're right Dean. Was beginning to think I'd killed the thread off, by stating that these are some of the best discoveries in recent times, just because it's so blindingly bloody obvious that they are.

They're in short supply too, already, so need picking up when you can and, let's face it, the label requires and deserves the support of every Soul fan (IMO).

Let's not forget this other brilliant Gem of a discovery from the past 2 - 3 years... also on Kent Select.

Ok, most of us can not come up with the big guns like butch and co but there are lots of tunes which very very rarely graced the decks and could be considered as a ''new discovery'' as only a few collectors may be aware of those tunes. I hope a few more people going to post some tracks !!!!!!

I did post this quite a few times and I have also been playing this for a good few years (8-9 I think??) but until recently it never came up on any playlist.

Also, when I asked some long standing dj's about it they didn't know about it at the time. It's not a manic stomper but a nice little mid tempo soul number which also became a Motte Oldie over the last few years ;)

The Hudson People got played a lot back in the day around the country, originally on the Hit House 12" release, which is a better mix, so much so that Ensign picked it up and put out a 12" & 45. Was very popular at Stafford in the early 80's. Recently it has seen a third release as a re-edit on the Arision label, but not heard that.

My golly that's a great track, took me an age to get an Eunice Collins, had no idea its actually been played out.. BIG record for Miss Goldie ex Sydney now residing in Melbourne, she used to hammer that on a radio show she did every Friday, that would have been 2004/5...
