perhaps this has been covered before, but could make for an interesting discussion...

we pretty much all know the "3 before 8" well enough by now, but what other tracks do you soul-sourcers like to hear or play to close out a night? what sound best rounds out your set when its time to pack up the box one more time? do you like to end on an uptempo dance number or a nice deep side to mellow it all out before the lights come up?

here's my current selection for a closer:

  • The two I used on Saturday to end my two set were.......... Walter Jackson-It's An Uphill Climb To The Bottom OKeh The Exits-Under The Streetlamp Gemini Both awesome tunes. htt

  • That Big Maybelle record is probably the most emotional vocal I've ever heard, almost makes me cry towards the end when her voice nearly breaks, talk about singing it from the heart..

  • This what I played as last record on the Riday night (0330) Hitsville Weekender. Mine was on the UK 'reissue' Demo though. A Majestic ender I reckon. Regards, D

I don't DJ but I always liked to hear this record closing the After Dark Winter Garden All Niters - Rick Dalton I think. It's a great track full stop.

It's All Over - Charles Mann

I used to always finish The Embankment Club with ‘Diana Ross - Stormy’….and when lights on, ‘The Odds and Ends — Let Me Try’

All the best,

Last word sounds like "bend"

:hatsoff2: - Kev

Two I've finished with in the past......

Rhythm Rascals - Why Do You Have To Go

Gee's - It's All Over.

Love 'em both.

I used to always end Clifton Hall, Rotherham, AllNighters with this one;

More recently, we've finished Just Soul with one or all of these beauties!

That Big Maybelle record is probably the most emotional vocal I've ever heard, almost makes me cry towards the end when her voice nearly breaks, talk about singing it from the heart..

Years ago at a do in Malvern Rob Hurcombe played Gladys Knight's "Its time to go". Our collective jaws at the bar hit the floor.

Motown's finest female in her finest moment, for me.

Well done Rob!

I posted it Dave.

It's on the Capitol album 'The Soul View Now' and can be obrained for upwards of £30 generally!

Has met with massive approval from the Just soul crowd every time I've played it.

Wonder if we can get her to do it at Cleggy next year? :0)

For me usually :

Hal Frazier - After Closing Time

Esther Phillips - Just Say Goodbye

Jackie Edwards - Come On Home

There's no doubting the endless list of fantastic mid tempo big sounding soul records that can be used to end a night.

But i've always wondered about the 'ender' thing and it baffles me sometimes...........

why end on such a slow note, especially if the night you've just been to is a pounding up tempo affair?

why not leave people wanting more by ending the way you ran things all night?

This probably dates back to times of old when i wasnt even born, but to me, the concept of an ender (slow to mid tempo soul traditionally) is outdated.

Now, im not saying dont finish on such a record - anyone who knows me is aware i love crossover and mid tempo soul. I'm just saying play it if it feels right, not because its the done thing.

If you feel like the night needs 'closing off' then a mid tempo tune changes the atmosphere, makes folk feel ready for going home but leaving hearing a tune of passion and feeling.

If you feel like the night has been electric and kind of in yer face, then dont switch the vibe right at the end. Send people home wanting more and still buzzing

Just my two penneth.

And for what it's worth, all posts so far are amazing records. I'd throw this into the mix for a traditional 'ender'

Pearl Jones - A dream

Edited by LilJimmyCrank

Johnnie Mae Matthews - I have no choice

Little Anthony - hurt so bad

Four Tops - Ask the lonely

Always try and finish with one of these three or maybe even all of them

How about ....

Bob Kuban - Wait Until Tomorrow

https://m.youtube.com...h?v=hXpQUbUepgY

Jay T. The Road Ahead

https://m.youtube.com...h?v=TCp_UumM8Ys

Bobby Bloom - We're All Going Home

https://m.youtube.com...h?v=0mcsyA4BTwk

Clicking on these links for youtube for a mobile have caused a problem for my desktop machine. Has anyone else experienced this?

I always thought this would make a good ender - Gene Diamond Till the end of time

Edited by manus

And with an open mind this one from John Holt Time is the master

I dont know how to upload to Youtube so no sound bite but I also think Johnny Blue Boy - "I'm going away " would make a fantastic ender.

Cheers

Manus

Know what you mean, brilliant as it is ending with the big mid tempo numbers, but used to love Guy's "altrnative" ender on occasion at Blackburn, "Rat Race"... sent us up the M6 gagging for more when the night ended on that horn blast!!

Thats the problem....dreary old end of night cliche records.....what you need is keith curtis or the bobbettes have fun......not that load of old cut ya wrists get out the hangmans noose type of music.

What we need Tezza :D , horses for courses....

Some nights demand a banging finish while others feel just right with a heartbreaker....

Catch the moment right andt that last record can be a magic moment, a real magic moment...

Here is one that i like to finish on....

:hatsoff2: HI ALL Before I start the best lender is in my pants! but for those who have seen my 1974 soft porn film "a girl on you hand, is better than 2 in a taxi" or "take 3 girls" only a bit part? I digress....

BIG NEWSFLASH!!!!

Tonight at 10.30 I received 2 packages from 2 of the most knowledgeable record collectors in the UK, In package (a) there was / is the best new record of the year, it really is sublime, and would win you vote as the best end-er I'm sure,

HOWEVER until I have spoken to the sender to ask his permission to play it, you will have to wait 48 hours, sorry but it will be worth it?

"oh my darling" by jackie lee and "dearly beloved"jack montgomery

This has always worked for me, and at 7mins 39 secs gives the floor plenty of time to bring the night to a close.

Gene Harris 'As'.

What, you don't like people dancing all, over emotional and 'urnest' at the end of a night?! .....Your heart must be a 'swinging brick' Terry :D

Mind you, have to admit when Danny finished Burnley on 'Judy Freeman and Black Rock - Hold On' it did finish on a high, although by that point I was a 'Husk' :D

All the best,

Len

Depends on what's gone before I suppose.

Sometimes it's good to go out with a bang,

others with a tear..

When I were a lad the youth clubs all seemed to finish with Otis Redding''s "Amen"

Slow(ish) ones I've used

Walter Jackson-Uphill Climb and Welcome Home

Jackie Wilson-No Heartaches

Ketty Lester-River Of Salt.

Soppy Sod that I am

Tony

Remember this being played as an ender.

Yep - That was my ender for Cleethorpes Winter Gardens Nighters, early 80's.

Nice one!

Sean

Current for me

Superb!!!!

When anyone puts a 'Link' on can they also put the record name as I cannot see them at Work and would love to see the selection. Just see an error message then everyone saying ' Great Choice !!' etc. Give us a clue !!

TEZZA........

GOING OUT OF MY HEAD..... LITTLE ANTHONY.... UNITED ARTISTS.......CLASS!!

Seem to remember Bob Hinsley finishing the Ritz nighters with this, not sure how many times he finished with it but I remember it as if it was every one, probably nothing of the sort,

Jimmy Cobb - So nobody else can hear

Finished a few nights off with this over the years.

If you don't know it don't be put off by the fact that it's R Kelly & do yourself a favour & give it the full 4 1/2 minutes.

I've always thought "Happy People" by him was an excellent stepper and would make a nice end to a night.
