Night Closers?

perhaps this has been covered before, but could make for an interesting discussion...

we pretty much all know the "3 before 8" well enough by now, but what other tracks do you soul-sourcers like to hear or play to close out a night? what sound best rounds out your set when its time to pack up the box one more time? do you like to end on an uptempo dance number or a nice deep side to mellow it all out before the lights come up?

    That Big Maybelle record is probably the most emotional vocal I've ever heard, almost makes me cry towards the end when her voice nearly breaks, talk about singing it from the heart..

I don't DJ but I always liked to hear this record closing the After Dark Winter Garden All Niters - Rick Dalton I think. It's a great track full stop.

It's on the Capitol album 'The Soul View Now' and can be obrained for upwards of £30 generally!

Has met with massive approval from the Just soul crowd every time I've played it.

Wonder if we can get her to do it at Cleggy next year? :0)

There's no doubting the endless list of fantastic mid tempo big sounding soul records that can be used to end a night.

But i've always wondered about the 'ender' thing and it baffles me sometimes...........

why end on such a slow note, especially if the night you've just been to is a pounding up tempo affair?

why not leave people wanting more by ending the way you ran things all night?

This probably dates back to times of old when i wasnt even born, but to me, the concept of an ender (slow to mid tempo soul traditionally) is outdated.

Now, im not saying dont finish on such a record - anyone who knows me is aware i love crossover and mid tempo soul. I'm just saying play it if it feels right, not because its the done thing.

If you feel like the night needs 'closing off' then a mid tempo tune changes the atmosphere, makes folk feel ready for going home but leaving hearing a tune of passion and feeling.

If you feel like the night has been electric and kind of in yer face, then dont switch the vibe right at the end. Send people home wanting more and still buzzing

Just my two penneth.

And for what it's worth, all posts so far are amazing records. I'd throw this into the mix for a traditional 'ender'

Know what you mean, brilliant as it is ending with the big mid tempo numbers, but used to love Guy's "altrnative" ender on occasion at Blackburn, "Rat Race"... sent us up the M6 gagging for more when the night ended on that horn blast!!

Thats the problem....dreary old end of night cliche records.....what you need is keith curtis or the bobbettes have fun......not that load of old cut ya wrists get out the hangmans noose type of music.

Mind you, have to admit when Danny finished Burnley on 'Judy Freeman and Black Rock - Hold On' it did finish on a high, although by that point I was a 'Husk' :D

Finished a few nights off with this over the years.

If you don't know it don't be put off by the fact that it's R Kelly & do yourself a favour & give it the full 4 1/2 minutes.

I've always thought "Happy People" by him was an excellent stepper and would make a nice end to a night.
