Hi all,

Well, its that time of year again :thumbsup:

It's 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, which started in 2007, here we go again!

Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers.

You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet!

You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months.

It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves.

It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster!

We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' :D Whatever floats your boat!

With increased diversity around these days, this should be an interesting list!

How about those funky groovers. Are they now providing a rich new seam of quality choonage?

No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year!

So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2013.

My tips, some will be known to most but can see these having a big year & shooting up pricewise.

First one is Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson - Willing. Was thought by many to be album only but it also got a 7" release on Arista. Getting big on the European scene & sure to follow here now a very few 7" copy's have surfaced (many thanks Mr Plumb).

Second one is from my favourite year (1979) & also one of my favourite groups, The Joneses - Love Contest. Know it's been getting a few spins this year from people like Wayne Arbon & of course myself & it always seems to get a great dancefloor reaction.

Third one & a bit of a contradiction to my first tip as it is an album only track. Also been around & known for a while but ignored by most due to the format. It's The Ascot's - She's So Indifferent To Me Now. Was fortunate enough to pick the album up very cheaply from Craig Moerer but they're now long gone.

they must have 5 or 6 play tracks on that LP, including the Great 'Graveyard Creep' which is a different and far better mix / cut to the Jet Stream 45 release.. which is credited to the singer, not the group....Mal.C :elvis:

Back of the sleeve also mentions 'Few Feet From The Gutter' but it's not on the album for some strange reason.

Agree with you on this Mart. Managed to pick the LP up a few years ago as well for next to nowt. Will have to dig it out for the next Chill Out.

Dave Lucas was playing all the good tracks off the Ascots album at' Dab of Soul' some years back, he introduced me and Wayne Arbon to the album..

Nice to see this thread again. I always got good tips from this so now it's time to contribute:

Larry Reynolds - Take away the big hurt - Tri Spin

Uptempo, perfect dancer and so much rarer than "Sweet Tooth". If the right DJ picks this up it will be huge.

Casino Royale - To be my girl - Key Loc.

Also quite rare. Perhaps a bit slow to really take over the dancefloors, but a pretty tune with Joe Jama on vocals and that has to contribute to something...

One of the hardest on the label for sure, possibly the hardest to locate in good shape? A point to note is that it would appear not to be Joe Jama on vocals but Fernando Arangua if you read the comments to the video on youtube, one of which is from Fernado's wife.

yeah, I don't know if Joe sang with the Casino Royale(s), they were a totally different group than the Royal Jesters

Can I add another. I was considering a thread along the lines of "What 3 tunes do you play at home to refresh your enthusiasm after returning from another mediocre oldies night - a sort of 3 Before Bed", but thought it would be less offensive to post 'em on here. At the moment one would be The Fabulous Denos posted earlier above, another would be this one.

Jimmy Radcliffe - Lucky Old Sun; on Shout. Don't expect to hear it out but for me it's one hell of an uplifting ballad. Worth starting a nighter just to have it as an ender!

This thread is always a good one one for recommendations, just picked up Ascots LP from Craig M, sure I paid more than those in the know earlier but still happy for it be in the post.

Was played rather a lot throughout the Modern Soul rooms by Gary Walsh (R I P), during 1986 and 1987 period.

Um - both the above Dynamic Superiors and Odyssey are very guilty of a serious case of "over popularity" !! 30 year old modern oldies.

I have to say that not many people seemed to know the Dynamic Superiors when I played it at The Attic when djing with Jo Wallace (seems ages ago now; probably 2011). It caused at least a couple of well known collectors/DJs to sidle across to the decks for a peek. Think I posted on the "cheap but brilliant" thread as well.

Great tune but too cheap to go massive. :wicked:

Another case of the crippling divide, fuelled by fragmentation, due to the poor clarity of the Northern Soul relation.

Northern and modern - were never twins or even cousins.

What could be made clearer.

Really good start to the thread everyone. Thank you.

Will give it a couple more days and then I'll do a consolidated list.

And don't be shy posting. Just because someone else already knows the track, or has played it (or heard it played out) doesn't mean it's not right to share with the rest of us.

With so many venues on throughout the UK, we can't all be everywhere, can we!

This is known and wanted by a few(sorry guys). First played by Paul Sutton many moons ago but only a few of us picked up on it.Took me years to find this bugger: From Brazil of all places:

Really think once copies turn up or sold to the bigger boys,this will go massive.

i fookin love this,bit of a funky one with great guitar riff and horns,its the other side of take me back so should only be bout a tenner(thats what i paid anyhow),reckon it would sound superb on a big system,not sure if anyone plays it cos i dont go out anywhere,perhaps not everyones cup of tea but im hooked on that guitar riff !
