John Manship's Tease Auction

There are definitely (I think) two gold professionals, one was around before Robin found his copy in the States as far as I know. Read the topic in the link I posted. Not sure where the second is though.

Hi chalks hope your O.K mate , I remember about 25 years ago a story about one being found in Belgium and people said it was common and a Belgium bootleg done for the other side for the Dutch/Belgium boy's. It's obviously an original and not a Dutch/Belgium thing However I'm convinced a collector in the Antwerp area called Patric De Wit had a gold professionals this has been a story not just in Belgium but also in the U.K over the years. I'm not saying it exits but De Wit is a well known older collector Anyone's memories be refreshed by this ? it was common talk some time back.

Regardless of what is up for grabs... why does anyone bid on anything when there are 20 days to go on an auction?

The mentality or should I say strategy of the bidder is different when a really rare record is on a well known auction opposed to someone hoping to snipe a relatively unknown record off ebay .

By which I mean ,the average collector always hopes to bag a rare record for a bargain or lesser price than it normally sells or books for ,so he pins his hopes on a late bid or snipe .

When a well publicised rarity turns up on eBay or Manship ,Brown ,Brady ,then it attracts the buyer with lots of spare cash and the guys are willing to out muscle the opposition in order to get the prize !

Putting in a big bid is a way of telling the average guy ,this ones out of your price range ,so don't bother bidding .

The fact people are putting bids in now ,is no surprise when the title suggest a one off ,big room record ,but at the end of the day ,its gonna go way past those bids ,so its not gonna come down to the early bidders having egg on their faces when they A) don't want it or B) can't afford to pay for it ,is it

Surely every week on JM's auction ,there are always the lower bids that drop out way short of the end price ,but they keep doing it ...nutters lol

Yep, I used to see the same names on there every week when new records went up. The same thing used to happen on ebay, the same names used to bid on everything northern right at the start of a listing. But just minimum bids, hoping to nick something cheap. I can only assume it gives them a cheap thrill and they can say to their buddies, "I bid on that, I was winning at one point" yeh right.

To my way of thinking if i have read it correctly there is ALREADY one of "these" 45's about, but it has always been thought of being one of a kind, a one off, only KNOWN copy to have surfaced......until now

 

Does this now NOT make it the rarest Northern 45 on the planet???? especially as it would now be safe to assume, i presume, that there could be more about??

Yes, mine Simon. Many years ago, late 70's or even possibly very early 80's I think I was at Sheffield's Kay Gee Bee all nighter. When I used to go to the Kay Gee Bee I always used to sit with Adrian Gyte who jointly ran the Strads record bar with Steve Croft. One night he was there with a box with some rather odd things in it. Several of these were on coloured vinyl & looked quite strange to say the least. A Pointer Sisters - Send Him Back on yellow vinyl, A Dutch Robinson - Can't get along Without You on gold vinyl (& also black vinyl), possibly a James Lewis - Manifesto on coloured vinyl & a Professionals on gold vinyl. This is fact as I bought the Pointer Sisters & a black vinyl Dutch Robinson & an old friend of mine from Sheffield bought the Professionals.

The Pointer Sisters has long gone but there is a thread on here that mentions it & here's a pic of somebody else's copy. Now has my mate still got the Professionals? Sadly not as he gave it to his brother who gave it to an old girlfriend.

Have also been told about someone with a similar box of coloured label things at Wigan Casino one night but wasn't there so can't confirm this.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting it was a bootleg but I'm not saying it wasn't either.

i thought of that too but it's been mentioned several times above already. but he says "two sider" and the inspirations is a 1-sided disc. maybe he got some crazy press with a flip.

 

he already has a guaranteed 1000 pounds, and hasn't done a reveal, he should switch it out to be a cheap record, that would be so awesome.

Weirdly enough, legally he could do that couldn't he? A cheap but acknowledged double-sider with a minor label variance would get him through the hurdles wouldn't it? Like you say awesome but bold strategy........

elvis went by and branded his (unique) first name. you can come up with exceptions but clearly when talking about any important literary or historical figure you generally use their last name.

I heard a lot of interviews with regards to Wilson Picket and it seems he was affectionately called "Picket" on some recordings he refers to himself that way

With reference to the Inspirations - 'No One Else Can Take Your Place' on Breakthrough .... I had protracted, and ultimately fruitless, discussions about this with Joey Jefferson. He maintained that the Breakthrough one-sided press was done to quickly test the market with a 'proper' release scheduled for Mutt & Jeff with 'You'll Never Make The Grade' on the flip ..... He maintained he got as far as pressing white promo copies but then cancelled the release. He claimed he still had copies and it was one of those I was after. Despite on the ground assistance from Jerry Williams no deal ever happened and I never got to see the 45.

I was never really convinced that he was being honest ..... I think he was just messing with my head. If the 45 did exist on Mutt & Jeff I figured we would have known about it through Neil Rushton's dealings with him.

But then stranger things have happened .......

There's only one Manship connected to rare records.Therefore using his surname is not in any way to be confused with any other Manship.
