As ITV are planning a special documentary this summer to find the Nation's favourite Motown song we thought it might be interesting to do a Soul Source version.
All we need is just the title & artist of one track & if you want a brief description as to why.
Know it's not an easy task to narrow it down to 1 track as there are so many to choose from but massive lists will just be a nightmare.

The thread will run for about 2 weeks & then we'll do the totting up & announce the results.

Be interesting to see how the 2 polls compare.

Away you go.

  • There were too many perfect Motown recorded songs to pick just one.  I'll say "Ask The Lonely" by The Four Tops -today.  Tomorrow it might be "Crying In The Night" by The Monitors. or "Truly Yours" by

Not many Jr Walker tracks mentioned - his version of These things will keep me loving you has been favourite for a while. Mind you it will be another artist and track soon

It was a toss-up between the miracles and Junior's road runner for me

just a quick word on the counting side

see a few have made more than one choice in posts

if thats the case then when counting it may be best to just  count the first posted one as the vote

that way memebrs still  get a vote and they also have  a chance to edit if they want another track counted or left if happy with the first one

does that make sense ?  :D

the temptations i wish it would rain ,the first 35seconds of this record shows the world how good ruffin was really sells the hurt in the song just gets me everytime i hear it .

next would be the versitilles-tell me .

Was just about to say the same Mike.

So who's doing the count then, me or you :wicked:

you might have to make it  1-uptempo 2 mid-tempo 3 ballads 4 lp tracks 5 "b" sides 6 unreleased 7 male group 8 female group 9 male 10 female 11 duet male/female 12 instrumental,  that should sort things out :D   .

the temptations " angel doll " awesome

the originals " suspicion " pure class

Gladys knight " too late for love " what a sax break

Just fixed my scanner, at last!  anyhow this is a nice thing, Aussie demo of the Isley Brothers - This old Heart, complete with all the play dates on the sleeve..

sure to be there I would think..

Impossible to narrow it down, and find myself agreeing with so many of the choices. But i'll add a couple .

Smokey & the Miracles - Just losing you.

Marvin & Tammi - What you gave me.

Jnr Walker & All Stars - Gotta hold onto this feeling.

Smashing choons yooth

"JUST LOSING YOU"  a masterpiece IMHO :hatsoff2:

heres mine..

four tops

My choice would be the B side to CLOUD NINE -TEMPTATIONS/. WHY DID SHE HAVE TO LEAVE ME, BRILLIANT, CHEAP, and not so sure that many people know it. JUST PLAY AND FALL IN LOVE. ROD

The whole of Cloud Nine LP is just awesome

One Motown track ????

One largely unsung = Martha Reeves - Heartless...

unissued ? probably Crying Time.

Can we have one a day  ??

all time, 'Suspicion' but recently (this week) The Isley Brothers - My Love is Your Love (Forever) from that 7" Motown box everybody was talking about recently.

Finally, and for sheer give it all to the FLOOR !!!

Barbara McNair - Lone Lonely Town...

put thread on temp hold for a day and then have a count up

inform people the current votes and then re-open ?

thursday morning ?

Please folks, read Mike and Cunnie's comments, it's just one track to choose otherwise it's impossible to make a definitive list.

Always loved  the faster  "Detroit Prophets "   :shhh:   Suspicion boot myself , but as mines on soul beat records -guess it doesnt count !!!!

So after much deliberation  ,gone with     The Temptations  -  Get Ready

put thread on temp hold for a day and then have a count up

Can you repeat this question this afternoon when I'll have had chance to think about it?

the contours. "whole lotta woman"            the DEMO  RNB version. sex on vinyl. motown is huge over here with two huge gatherings in perth alone drawing 2/300 crowds

Can you repeat this question this afternoon when I'll have had chance to think about it?

nah, it was just a  quick message to mart (cunnie)

i did it onthread just so people would be aware how we are doing the adding up

Velvelettes - Needle in a haystack

Funny how when you're a kid ( and even now sometimes ) something you hear once and sticks and sticks and you never ever get tired of it.
Top shelf toe tapper.

I've often though for all the great rare/ obscure records we listen to some records were hits for a reason and deservedly so.
( admitted that some were'nt, but that's another story)
Has there been a worst record on Motown thread? Couldn't find one.

Originals suspision

or could we have Fantastic Four Can't Stop looking For My Baby? I know it wasRic Tic but it was released on the Motown Ric Tic relics. Superb.

Tammi Terrell did a great version.

This would be the one for me. Are there any other versions as i thought it was earmarked for the four tops .

Sorry someone has already replied to this.

Almost impossible to choose but this one would be close to the top..

My two pence:

Four Tops:  Baby I Need Your Lovin'

Temptations:  Get Ready

Tammi Terrell & Marvin Gaye:  Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing

This thread just shows how good Motown was. Great topic. I've had my vote...does anyone like Do What You Gotta Do?

This is one of my many favourites , don't think it's been mentioned yet ?

MARVELETTES - DESTINATION ANYWHERE - TAMLA

Swifty

Being spoon fed on motown from 1968 I was only 7  ,severn rooms of gloom, shake me wake me,ask the lonely.the Tops.Where ever I lay my hat marvin gaye etc  looking back.truly awesome apprenticeship into Northern Soul. .........

jeez I hate these polls... is it just me cos I cannot list favourites be it northern, rare, deep whatever ...just too many to list.

I'm 56 now and Motown has been a backdrop to my life - Good times, Bad times, Happy times and Sad times. Hard to select a number one track for each act, let alone overall but I'll go for the magical Marvin Gaye and Inner City Blues (Make me wanna holler). Sheer poetry. Relevant in '71, still relevant today?

Close call for me - between Miracles Tracks of my Tears, Four Tops Baby I Need Your Lovin, and the superlative Suspicion, but I'll give it to the Isley's This Old Heart Of Mine - the first of my many, many TMG purchases!

three from the temps . My girl and aint too proud to beg. . and cloud nine.

So many to choose from and I'll probably change my mind in 5 minutes but I'll go with Jnr Walker ---What does it take to win your love. Always been a favourite for me.

What about  '  I'll be doggone '  Marvin Gaye, absolutely fabulous Northern/ Motown sound, from one of the very best genius black male vocalists ever, fantastic enduring 60's soul !

Edwin Starr - Headline News ..... Always puts a smile on my face and a spring in my step !

Probably my favourite from The Tops.... :hatsoff2:
