Brilliant post, thanks - a real time capsule

I just listened again to the sound clip of Nev Wherry DJing - There's something magical about it. So sad to learn (from Roger Banks at New Century Soul) that he died at the early age of 40. I would have loved to have met him, going by what people have written, he was an approachable person, and obviously loved sharing the music that he discovered.

Respect.

The Sun article had him as 28, which sounds more likely?

Great thread BTW

I suspect The Sun got it wrong, Roger Banks chatted about Nev to me (He was a friend of his) Maybe someone can confirm the age, 40 or 28 is far to young of course.

The photo and the fact he died early 1980's would suggest to me 28 more accurate

You're probably right actually (I more than likely miss-heard) So sad regardless.

Don Ryan (Notts) won the dance contest at the 1st memorial and Im surprised the 2nd one offering the memorial shield as he kept it - Contrary to the original agreement. Im sure the young lady who came second was meant to get it after 6 months and then return it for future events. Bet Don has still got it.

Another poster where Nev DJ'ed

You and me both Spike !

I was there with the likes of Andy Cole, Bri Simpson, Paul Holland, Ant Moore, Jibber Yates plus a whole host of others. Remember Johnny Wright used to be a regular behind the decks also.

Used to love Matlock Bath all dayers and yes the dance studio in Sheffield was the KGB

I still live about 2 miles away from Inky Social and the building is still there but its now a builders merchants.

Hi mate

If you go to YouTube and type in   WIGAN CASINO OUT TAKES P-3

And then if you go to 19 seconds throught to 32 seconds on the footage

You'll see my old mate and fellow EASC Dj NEV being held at the doors as

you come into the Casino. Nev was a really lovely guy you can even sense it

in this short poingnant clip just by his smile....so gentle and friendly.

I can tell you it was a real shock to everyone the night we found out at a Soul

event in Peterborough  So Sad....

Anyway this clip keeps us remembering him which is nice

Hi John,

I never met Nev Wherry as he was part of the scene before my time - To me he is one of the legends, I only know of him because he was named on the Destiny records LP 'The Record Collector' (Loved the cover on that) It's good to hear from people such as 'Hammy' who knew him personally.

Hope to see you some day soon mate

All the best,

Len

Thanks.

Any reason why it stopped at 3? I did meet Nev and Keith a few times, and its great to hear about the dedication they put into our scene.

I guess there's many movers and shakers who have sadly passed who should be spotlighted for their impact and influence.

Sadly we never knew most of the artists, with the odd exception, but particularly for the original djs and promoters it would be great to hear about them.

Hi Ed,

I really enjoyed the 'Spot-light On' series that we got going.  There was some really interesting / funny / affectionatte input from members in ref to whoever a particular one was about. Members sent me many great suggestions, which were not all the obvious well known people - Of course some of the well known people would have been included as their stories are also great, but it's just as interesting and enjoyable to hear about those that are 'under the radar'.

That said, it was decided that it was too hard to moderate - The last thing intended was for a person to be offended by what someone may have written about them (Which can happen even with good intensions)

Yes, those that have sadly passed away would have been regularly included, and by doing so I know that it would have acted as a nice tribute to them - 'Bub' was one of the many suggestions for example, as was 'Derek Allen'

So sad really. Such a young age.

These days you'd hope a carbon monoxide alarm would have picked up the faulty appliance.

What are they? A tenner?

Should be built into every appliance, and cut off the power if the reading is not right.

Same thing with those poor kids on holiday abroad a few years ago
