Guest Mart B
I was flicking through krs top 500 book and came across the top 10 towns that influenced northern soul through the decades. 1 Bolton 2 Dudley 3 Pontefract 4 MANSFIELD 5 Burnley 6 Bury/Radcliffe 7 Newton Aycliffe 8 Wigan 9 Preston 10 Kettering. Krs order not mine. Personally i think krs got it about right, but his book was written 1999/2000 and places and the scene as changed.Does anyone out there agree with krs choice or are there towns that you live in warrant being on that list?.Opinions please no politics!. Jaco
You need to appreciate that KR's criteria in selecting this list is to do with being the "homes of large and dedicated groups of soul fans". Without that criteria Blackpool, Stafford, Yate, Cleethorpes would be included before some of those listed. Link to comment Social source share

In my opinion I cant believe there's no mention of any of the following Widnes, Warrington. In the mid to late 70,s there was a soul night 7 nights a week in Widnes at different venue's. Warrington had the Carlton then Parr hall. Then there was St Helens, Where the Saints club ran for i think 11 years through the 80,s and 90,s The Saints was responsible for breaking as many tunes as any of the nighters that where knocking about at the time and Baz M and Flanny just don't get the credit they deserve. Great topic by the way. Steve 1 Link to comment Social source share

Whilst musically they may not be to everyones taste, their success can't be argued with. Add in a couple of venues in Cambridge, and St Ives, and it's a pretty strong area. Guest
My vote for UK's most soulful town is Newton Aycliffe In the mid-70s an amazing amount of collectors came from this town. Today I'd guess more people collect rare soul in that town per head of population than any other small town. According to our database we have 19 from that town..+ many more from the surrounding areas. Take a bow, Newton Aycliffe. Link to comment Social source share

Got to agree with that the aycliffe nighters in the seventies regulary pulled in crowds to match the casino and many of the collectors then are still about today, collecting and still visiting the usa regular.Id say well over 50 hardcore collectors witrh 30 year plus collections. Then you have the surrounding areas likeBishop Auckland,Spennymoor,Easington,Darlington,Billingham, and the bigger Newcastle and Boro.ITS a hotbed alright. Guest Netspeaky
You need to add North Wales vilages and hamlets to this list, but the Casino has to be the top spot, if you ask the average man in the street about a northern soul venue then I would put money on their answer - Wigan, the rest of us will all have different views on it of course but the reality is the Northern Soul and Wigan go hand in hand. Maark
No Stockport!! ....Kettering?????????????????? Lot of the places being touted on this thread are saying this town or that town USED to be a big soul place. Kettering still is! Wicksteed Park (I'll be there tommorrow for the Velvelettes) Central Hall, KLV, Cornmarket, Three Cocks inn, are just a few venues off the top of my head I've been to on a regular basis in Kettering in the past 3-4 years. There is, and always has been a strong Northern soul base in Kettering. If you add Desborough and Rothwell into the equasion (both in Kettering Borough) then the case for 10th place is even stronger. Northants is 7th in the city/area table. Allthough there are no big name venues here, there is always something on on the A6 in Northants or Wellingborough and latterly, Corby. Northampton for the size of the place let's the county down imho. And as for soulies per head of population, I'd put a shout in for Higham Ferrers. Population 6,500 and every single one of them is a soulie! Well nearly. Link to comment Social source share
