Just had to let you all know how good tonight was in Sydney, It was a free concert in the middle of Sydney and Al Green was the headline act!!

Over 80 thousand people moving to all his classics and a few covers. He nearly pulled out due to Willie Mitchells death.

This guy still has it!!! sharp falsetos a great presence and he had each of the 80 k audience in the palm of his hand!! It was quite an emotional evening.

love to hear anybody elses experiences at seeing great soul gods live!

No, I didn't know there was a forthcoming release. The last CD was from last year - Lay It Down - which was pretty good.

Al Hudson and Soul partners at The Blackpool Mecca!

Wish I had a clue who I was watching but I was taken by cousin's bird who was red hot and well worth a tug! She was my fave wank for five years!

Can't remember much about Al Hudson but I did visit the Highland rooms and that is where my Northernsoul odyssey started, great music but there was a bird wearing stockings and suspenders flashing her trumpet every time she span in her circle dress!

Still keeps me awake on a night!

Phil Perry,Glenn Jones,Howard Hewitt - Blackpool Hilton

Incognito - Blackpool Hilton.

A couple of more recent concerts spring to mind during recent Vegas trips...

One was Etta James last year - god knows how old she is now but she sure knew how to flirt with an audience - and is wasn't all that subtle either !! unfortunately half way through the concert she decided she's had enough and walked off.....

The other was Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts - doing all the Blues Brothers stuff and a bit more... all good crowd pleasing stuff and lots of audience participation - but the standout was the harmonica player who did a lengthy solo - awesome !!!

Marvin Gaye - Sheffield City Hall

Detroit Spinners / Sister Sledge / Jimmy Castor / Ben E King- Manchester

Gil Scott Heron - Birmingham Barbarellas

Parliament / Funkadelic -Manchester Belle Vue

KC and the Sunshine Band - Doncaster Outlook

Fatback Band - Birmingham Barbarellas

George Benson - Manchester

Temptations and Junior Walker - Sheffield Fiesta

Stevie Wonder / Martha and the Vandellas - Sheffield City Hall

Hamilton Bohannon / Commodores / Blackbyrds - Manchester

All from 70s and all stand out for different reasons...

And more recently...

The Funk Brothers - Montreal Jazz Festival

Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham - Sheffield Boardwalk

Tony Joe White Sheffield Montgomery Hall !!

Andy

Tommy Hunt at Wigan

The Exciters at Wigan

Tavares at the Ritz Manchester

Evelyn Thomas,L J Johnson,Barbara Pennington also at the Ritz Manchester

The best entertainment at a live show I ever went to was Kid Creole and the Coconuts at the Manchester Apollo about 81-ish it was fantastic,

The one I missed that I would have loved to have seen was EWF at Bingley,The best show ever so my mates tell me,

Saw Prince in Manchester but not earth shattering,Was in America at the time of Michael Jacksons trial NOW that was a show

Marvin Gaye - Manchester Apollo 1976?

Gladys Knight - Manchester Free Trade Hall 1973?

Bobby Bland - San Diego - 1986

Bobby Womack - Manchester International - 1991?

Millie Jackson - Manchester Apollo - 1975?

Junior Walker - Stoneground, Manchester 1973

Edwin Starr - Bury Basement Club -1972

Cannot specifically remember the years in some cases but definitely remember the concerts.

Otis Clay - Town&Country

Sam Dees- The Kilt& Dingwalls

Ann Peebles-Outer Limits,Edinburgh(backed by THE Memphis horns)

Jo Armstead-The Kilt. This massive young guy who was traveling with JA came into the tiolet and said "what do you guys do to get high round here"? Kerso sorted it out.

Jonnie Bristol- The Kilt

David Sea- Cleethorpes Weekender(a bit hazy on sound quality but what a voice on Love Me Dow

Garland Green- see above

Art Blakey . Winston Marsellie backing -Queens Hall(Edinburgh)

GS Heron-Queens Hall(Edinburgh)

AL GREEN at Southampton Gaumont circa 1975, absolutely awesome at his peak.

FOUR TOPS at same venue, same period, utterly brilliant performance, made more memorable by meeting LEVI and the lads backstage and sitting with them for nearly an hour talking about Detroit and Chicago in the 60s. Me and two mates, the only people who bothered going back! LEVI had on the biggest gold lions head ring I had ever seen! Still remember asking him about MAJOR LANCE and he replied 'Yeah I had a few beers with 'The Major' in Detroit a few months ago!' We followed their coach for 25 miles up the old A roads until they turned onto the old M3 junction, flashing us big grins and thumbs up from their coach windows. Oh, the golden days of youth....!!thumbsup.gif

The Dells was a standout for me,mainly because I went with Martyn Ellis, hadn't been out and about for a long time, and met up with several old faces..........brilliant.

Gladys Knight was awsome in Hanley in the seventies, when she sang Help me make it through the night, you cold have heared a pin drop..........and at the end the place exploded.

Al Green was disappointing in Manchesterrecently, half an hour and just seemed to be going through the motions.

Earth, Wind and Fire at Bingley Hall.

Parliament/ Funkadelic

Cool. I bet that was good. Same Girl is CD of the decade imo.

yeh sure was cool stage was about a foot high.you could get as close as you liked, also got invited yo yhe appollo by a bass player that night who also played in the appollo house band,he called me over in an interval asking me where I was from .only my flight to chicago stoppped me going I was gutted but bumped into jimmy burns in a bar the next day which made up for it:thumbup:

The 3 at the top of my list would be.

1. JJ Barnes at The Casino (mid /late70's)

This was the first time I heard a black man sing live and it was the absolute main reason I continued the soul journey. I swear I changed physically that night.

2. My second would be The Masqueraders at Prestatyn for shear Quality and Class.

3. Ray Pollard/Tony Middleton/Terry Callier/Sid Barnes/Hoagy Lands/Maxine Brown/Betty Lavette/Dean Parrish at 100club.

Would have loved to have seen The O'Jays and Jackie Wilson.

Kev

Sam Dees - Thorne.

loved this night, never saw video Rob Wigley took though ( i think).

got a Voices signed, "After All, The Show Must Go On"

BUT, best for me was:

Chairman of the Board at Hucknall Welfare, Notts, on night they split up, AWESOME

steve

I got spoiled by the first gig I ever went to - Sam & Dave @ Sheffield Fiesta in early 70's. Absolutely unbelievable performance when they both came out into the audience at both sides of the venue and just blew the place apart.

I thought all gigs were gonna be like that!

Seen most acts over the years but I've never seen a performance as good as that first one!

Any chance of a scan Geoff?

Everytime i seen Jimmy James he is pure class and that's 3 times.

Geno Washington was amazing

The Real thing

Tommy Hunt and i saw them all in the 00's

Dean Parrish too

Edwin Starr, first time I saw him at Tiffanies Durdham Down, Bristol 1975, and Kings Hall Stoke when he sang acapella due to backing tape problems late 90's, and sadly the last time I saw him....Junior Walker 1977(8)? at Tiffanies Newport, when my faith in God was restored, having had to miss the Wigan performance due to "fund shortages", and coming across his pending performance in my "hometown" by pure quirk of fate (poster displayed in shop window)!Sam Dees,at the Canal Tavern Thorne late 80's,(awesome) and the Funk Brothers at the Manchester Apollo, a few years ago, all very special and memorable occasions that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up................. and made me feel both very humble and moreover grateful for being there!
