Sorry Ockers but the Paul Craver numbers are not doing it for me, in fact if I heard them played anywhere I'd just leave and go home immediately.

To each to his own on the beach style soul

I like them nice covers

The holiday band has a great melody too

If you're thinking of going home after hearing them then you're at the wrong venue

Music nights on a broader level are usually more stimulating and enjoyable

How about this 60's stormer...Charley Wynn - Action Time on Jim Gem.

Not too easy to locate and not aware of it breaking out from being a collectors disc (flipside is Deep Soul), but it has progressions and vocal harmonies not a million miles away from "Jeanette" and "Man Oh Man" in places...take a listen:

Massive spin in the east midlands for Andy Powell over the last year and fills the floor.

Ok going to try another LP track only ( I think?) more in the old style , again it's probably been hammered in the past but I've never heard it out (maybe not good enough really  ) but sounds right blasting out my speakers at Swift Towers

DIONNE WARWICK - LONELY IN MY HEART - PYE LP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07C0d8a1KEU

Swifty

Always nice to hear a bit of non Bacharach - David, from Dionne's Scepter period.

Glad to hear that it is going down well...great Northern...plenty of mileage left in it I'm sure!

Anything else on this early design label...the Jimmy Jules' releases are obviously later. :g:

back in ye oldene days when I was foolishly booked to play records to an unsuspecting public, this was something I spun occasionally and people danced. I've done my research and nobody has ever mentioned it in this forum and there is no googleable content of any other claims to it being 'massive' anywhere. It's a cheap LP on Buddah, and I think it's got the longest title of any record I own... 'God has blessed our hands... A musical tribute to a people's struggle for equality'. And most bizarrely, he's got Rance Allen playing guitar and not singing on it.

so there :)

cheers Sutty

Thanks for the tip. I just bought it.

Cheers,

Reinhard

I totally agree Rob and the guys at Numero do a great job. They dig deep them selves plus have a wide network of peeps that help them. Along the same vain Nev I'm sure you'd want to big up Soul Junction who do an equally great job.

As for Kirsty's offering of Fourth Level, unless more copies have turned up and she knows something I don't, there just aren't enough copies around for it to go big this year. As far as I know there are 4 real vinyl copies on 3 continents and not all with DJ's. I have a copy, but the other three I believe are with collectors and the reality is that I don't play out enough to really make that much impact on any record. It might become a hot topic this year, a swapped soundfile etc, but a big record, ie the general punters paying on the door, kind of known, don't think so.

Think there is always a danger of this thread becoming 'I know something you don't know' a form of elitism. Where as I thought the thread was about records that have been known amongst a few collectors breaking through to being really popular.

Dave I still can't get my head around the term elitism as if people wish to hear Fourth Level they are going to have to look out for where you are DJing, as they say you stumped up for the golden piece of vinyl & as there are quite a few people with an interest in certain records they will travel so just make sure its available for request, as I'm guessing there will be quite a few requests for this awesome piece of vinyl. Nice to know it's in safe hands & at least one has stayed this side of the water :)

P.S you could always see if you could turn it into a 100 club single & keep the masses happy :rofl:

I am not inviting any kind of negative debate when I say this, its purely a personal observation, I think there have been some crackin tunes posted so far, but very few of them would be suitable for an Allnighter IMVHO, some mixed in cleverly by very good DJ's could make it, most wouldn't....having said that, most would sound great at a Modern/Crossover Night....

Best Russ

Just as well not everyone restricts themselves to all nighters then eh Russ :)

Agree...nowadays copies of a newie/re activated disc need to reach the hands of several DJs at the same time in order for a track to really burst through to the masses...due to the fact that there is no "focal point" nighter a la Wigan.

With regards to the Fourth Level...as Russ pointed out it was an old 100 Club cult spin for Shifty, later championed by Paul Sadot. Such a belting tune...solid nighter tuneage with more than a hint of "Twinkle Little Star" about it. I found a copy over here a few years ago, but alas my UK DJ appearances per year are even less than Daves!!

Going to use a swear word hear "Album track" seen it mentioned as an option, my choice, as Nev so rightly tipped their latest, Notations, some have tried with this I know, but I reckon if this was on a 45, a lot more people would be talking about it

As always love your enthusiasium Kirsty, but in reality I've had it for a few years and never been asked for it in this country. Do get asked for it abroad though a fair bit. Not like I've hidden it, played maybe every other radio show for at least a year. So as I say think it's gonna take a few other DJ's getting copies before it goes big, what ever that means.

Just noticed this as a recent Ebay sale at $879....  Is that about right or was that an aberration?.... it wasn't even the right version (neither is the one pictured here.)

Must have been a few in for it, don,t understand the right or wrong version? I know Brett's is different (not that much) personally I like both takes, and it matters little to me that I have the wrong take

Yes Brett has the all yellow label version which is the better mix. I had the yellow and red version and the all yellow is a better mix with everything up in the mix. It's a great record on either label though, but I was surprised that it went for that much. I think I traded mine to Skeg Mick for his Thomas East - Follow the rainbow, although the memory is misty.

Yup, a well known record especially for those that appreciate just how good Willie Hobbs was

As you say "superb double sider" and if this is the quality of what you're playing I'd be knocking at the door to come in

if you weren't so far away that is  :D

A couple I've been bigging up to whoever listens are:

For the dancefloor:

G C Cameron-Topics

Oscar Toney Jr-My Girl

Sam Dees-Gimme A Little Action

Lo End-Today

Free Movement-The Harder I Try

For the Deep lounges:

Paul Michell Trio-Now That I Know What Loneliness Is

Doris Duke-Please Come Back

Bobby Hebb-Woman In The Window

Sam Dees-Married But Still In Love With You

Tommy Tate-Gonna Take My Hearts Advice

There's no such thing as an unknown record, it's how many people haven't heard it yet.

I've been actively pushing records I love since 1995 at least, and I'm constantly surprised at what people don't know, or dismissed because it didn't fit in at that time.

Just as well not everyone restricts themselves to all nighters then eh Russ :)

      Best for 2014 mate

HNY buddy...well I certainly dont, & I also enjoy a lot of different genres of soul music, so find myself attending different types of Soul Nights & events other than just All Nighters (like many on SS)...

However, traditionally the back bone of the Northern & Rare Soul Scene, has always been All Nighters, I think that its a reflection of the current All Nighter scene, that there are very few tips that would be suitable for an All Nighter posted thus far.

I appreciate that there will always be folk who want to keep thier current hotties to themselves instead of posting them up all over the internet, I also appreciate that few of the Dj's I would consider to be the top Nighter DJ's have posted, but I think the tips so far, on the whole, are more from a Modern, Crossover & collectors perspective, as opposed to anything that 'fuel' an All Nighter.

Non of the above is intended to be critical, the selections once we got going are very good, but I was making an observation, that I think reflects the lack of dancers suitable for an All Nighter.

Top Tip from me & currently in my PLAY box  & planted on REFOSOUL is

Mass Production - Magic - Cotillion Records

Awesome Modern Soul Dancer over 6mins of pure pleasure of the Lp or the 7"

atb Kev  :hatsoff2:

Wasn't this only available on 7" in the UK ?

I seem to recall the US Cotillion 45 release (of "Welcome To Our World") featuring "Just A Song" as it's B side.

Did the US 12" single did have this on it's B side ?   .... maybe not.

I think if we are honest Russ the days of the all-nighter is fast dwindling with less and less hardcore nighter goers every year.....the oldies only venues will last longer but you are not going to influence the DJ's one bit as they are rooted firmly in a certain decade.

The best record recommended so far that would IMO have a chance of gaining exposure to a wider audience is the Notations "That Girl" and some of the Soul Junction releases but I doubt it because o0of the mentality of collectors and Dj's.

I'm sure I have a copy of that UK 7" somewhere, I'll have to look it out.

A lot of soul collectors in the mid to late 70's weren't buying the UK versions of releases and so no doubt it woun't be about in huge numbers (though there are currently quite a few copies on discogs at under £3).
