Wanna fill the dance floor ? Then play these......

Velvelettes - Lonely, lonely girl am I

Edwin Starr - My weakness is you

Marvelettes - I'll keep holding on

Four Tops - Something about you

Four Tops - Shake me, wake me

Velvelettes - Bird in the hand

You know it makes sense.

The TM records I strongly associate with Wigan in the 1980-81 period (Sat and Fri nights) are

Barbara McNair - You're Gonna Love My baby

Velvelettes- Lonely , lonely girl am I

Isley Brothers -  Tell Me It's Just A Rumour

Brenda Holloway - When I'm Gone

To a slightly lesser extent - Four Tops - Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind

Frances Nero - keep on loving me

Rueben Howell - you can't stop a man in love

Edwin Starr - Time

Four Tops - something about you

Velvelletes - lonely lonely girl

The Supremes - Hes all I got

Virgil Henry - you ain't saying nothing new

Isley Bros - my love is your love

The Originals - Suspicion (still massive)

frank Wilson - do I love you (seriously popular)

there are so many 'big' Motown spins, throw any on, they'll all get a reaction

any of these are floor activators

                                        i.Stace

For serious floor detonation drop Martha Reeves & Vandella's  One Way Out. Maybe Tune Up Junior Walker, Walk In My Shoes Gladys Knight, Barbera Randolph I've Got A Feeling, what about the Spinners I'll Always Love You. The Contours Just A Little Misunderstanding gotta be a surefire winner one of the essential Motown sides for any beginer.

A few suggestions :-

David & Jimmy Ruffin - Turn Back The Hands Of Time

Edwin Starr - Running Back And Forth /Time

Ivy Jo - I Can Feel The Pain

Earl Van Dyke - All For You

Originals - Don't Stop Now

Temptations - Save My Love for A Rainy Day

Stevie Wonder - Nothings Too Good For My Baby

4 Tops  -  I'll Never Change

here's a quick motown twosome from me

"Whole Lot Of Shakin' In My Heart (Since I Met You)" by The Miracles

and the search engine song

Marvin Gaye -Seek And You Shall Find

anthemic 3am motown!

Recent,........ marvin gaye  "love starved heart"

Classic............isley bros     " why when the love has gone"  All time top track for dancers

Slow down classic.........frances nero         "keep on loving me"  awesome

And for the instrumental....torch classic  earl van Dyke     "6 by 6"

Always in Motown in my sets since its getting harder to find newies and prices rising sky high....

Destination anywhere, Time, 7 Rooms, Bernadette, Ghost in my house, No more heartaches, Contact

Cheers

And...for something a little different:

The Four Tops/Since you've been gone - top tune

Shorty Long/You're love is amazing - great version

Chris Clark/Put yourself in my place

Marv Johnson/You got the love I love

Mary Wells/What's easy for two (is so hard for one)

Reuben Howell/Can't stop a man in love - excellent song/production. So not Motown!

The Four Tops/I got a feeling

The MPG is a great shout, some phenomenal dancers on it! So many relatively untapped things tucked away on Motown LPs: the aforementioned, Temps (take your pick), Gladys Knight, Chuck Jackson, Monitors etc etc. Fish n barrels.

Your set would depend on what you have available to play. Will it be OVO? If it is you will be limited assuming you 40 years hibernation has prevented you from buying vinyl. If it is anything goes - CD or MP3,then you could do the best Motown set ever - and because it's Motown you could do the best set ever the next night then the next one and the next etc etc. It also depends on where your gig is and the audience. I think that in most venues anyone could play a Motown set and keep the dance floor buzzing.

It also depends on your personal taste doesn't it? Play the things that do it for you - you can't go wrong with Motown!!!

Just a few from me

Miracles - Whole Lot Of Shaking - already mentioned above

Originals - Suspicion - surprised this hasn't been mentioned

Four Tops - Walk Away Renee

David Ruffin - I Want You Back

Stevie Wonder - Be Cool Be Calm

Four Tops - I Like Everything ABout You

There is also one that you must know despite having been in hibernation for so long. It's a previously little known track from 1965 by Frank Wilson called Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) which has gained in popularity over the past 40 years. This one is very popular with the dancers.

Do enjoy a bit of Martha, so

I gotta let you go, and one that doesn't seem to get enough action Heartless.

Oh, and The Supremes-Misery makes it's home in my heart

Temptations - Girl why you wanna make me blue - It's still fantastic even after hearing it 20 billion times

Just had a great hour making a 7ts motown mixcloud

Jimmy Ruffin - Gonna Give her All The Love I've Got

The followings never let me down:

LaBRENDA BEN & THE BELJEANS - THE CHAPERONE
The Supremes - Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart
Virgil Henry - You Ain't Saying Nothing New
J J Barnes - Please Let Me In
Barbara McNair - Youre Gonna Love My Baby

All the best,
Andrea

Nice one Rob. I've got David Ruffin's version of No Matter Where but I really like GC Cameron's take on it too. Foolishly didn't buy one of the several copies in Music & Video Exchange in Notting Hill Gate a few years back.

Marvin Gaye - Where Are We Going (never mind the lack of 45)

The Contours Just a little misunderstanding

timeless call to the dancefloor

if interested you can listen to our Motown night on mixcloud a few weeks ago.

Witney Soul Club.

Please forgive the feedback I don't Dj regular on a few tracks.

GC Cameron !

I wouldn't knock any track mentioned before, what an awesome outlet - Motown has gotta be the purest form of 60's soul in the world, don't think I saw listed so here's some from me;

Chris Clark - Love's gone bad (So sassy)

Spinners - Sweet thing

Spinners - What more can a boy ask for

Spinners - She's gonna love me at sundown

Marvelettes - Destination anywhere

Marvin & Tammi - California Soul (one for the camper on any road on a summers day)

Edwin Starr - 25 Kilometers (Another stupid EU rule!)

Marv Johnson - I miss you baby how I miss you

Four Tops - Wonderful baby (Put onto this by one of the early Wigan DJ's, not sure how long lived his career was but he knows his stuff, Cheers - Alan Rhodes)

And one that may not fill a dancefloor but when you want a breather, the purity of the vocal and lyrics on this is quite outstanding..... melancholy moments.....

Eivets Rednow -  Hey love

I could go on, the catalogue of released and unreleased is endless

Would like to add the Ivy Jo Hunter VIP tracks.....would have loved to have heard his Album,  sadly never to be released:(

I'm mainly a late 60s early 70s motown ...........however Bottom and Co. Gotta find a true love is brilliant, although its classed as modern soul/ crossover ?

3 from me

Earl Van Dyke...Nowhere to Run

Bobby Taylor...Oh I've Been Blessed

Tammi Terrell...Come On and See Me

One extra classic, The Night by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.
