I know there have been various topics about hearing our music in ‘strange’ places. I also know that this is far more common place today.

But I was very surprised to hear Prince Phillip Mitchell’s version of Keep On Talking in Morrisons yesterday!

Funnily enough ! My mate is currently on holiday in Crete - in a hill top mountain retreat in the middle of nowhere with the wife ( keen walkers ) and this is on the hotel podcast ! 🤷‍♂️

Donny B & Q and Morrisons must have soul fans in the office as its constant soul on the background music....love it!

Most unusual....ordinary Joe played in an electrical store opposite Veronica's in Tenerife.

Most unexpected....Margaret Mandolf something beautiful on John Peel RIP radio 1 show.

I remember years ago in PC World and a young tech geek was filling my head with all sorts of confusing terminology about an impending laptop purchase. As I was at tech lingo breaking point on comes Tony Clarke Landslide. That was his time to be confused as I jigged around his expansive impromtu dance floor. Cheers Tony, you saved me!

Bit presumptuous of you calling it "our music" methinks , it's 2022 not 1972 , anyone would think that it's some kind of exclusive secret society that you belong to rather than someone living on a planet flooded with information via the internet and it's associated technology ....

Our old Alliance & Leicester branch in Bethnal Green East London use to have music piped through and can remember one time in the queue If You Were There by Ace Spectrum started playing. Most random place I can think of 😂

Home Bargains seems to have an eclectic playlist on its piped music, quite often find myself shuffling along in front of the beer shelves  seeing what specials they have. This week Harry J Liquidator came on, something far more obscure played once but can't bring to mind what it was. 

Early summer of 2019 and I'm spending three weeks on our favourite Greek island. 

Sitting in a taverna one afternoon, and Carlton Jumel Smith's 'This is what love looks like' comes on the radio. That's quickly followed by some Joe Bataan and a whole host of great soul tunes. I never did find out what the radio station was called (it was all Greek to me), but what a lovely and unexpected way to while away a sunny afternoon.

I was once shopping in a discount store/Garden centre type place.

Over the speakers, an old recording of Mr. Searling's CFOS show was playing.

I was shocked to hear Richard giving out details of a Soul night that I was running in a local pub, name checking me....this event was about 6 months old.

I just hope nobody, upon hearing this recording, turned up expecting a Soul night.

There's a scene in The Deuce (the James Franco series about hookers, porn etc in 70s New York) where they visit a guy's bedsit and Charade by The Four Tracks is playing in the background.

We were out for dinner with RS and JS when they came up to visit (Pete and him were very close going back to 71 - last week marked 2 years since Pete passed away BTW) - we were in the only Temperance Inn left in Britain - The Cross Keys - in the absolute middle of nowhere round the back of the Howgills between Kirby Stephen and Sedburgh and Pennine Radio was playing in the restaurant just as we were talking about music and what Richard did to the owner (who we were very friendly with) when on came Judy Freeman and Black Rock.

sopranos exposure led to plays

I was in Marks & Spencer's  clothes dept about 10 years ago, heard the fabulous  "Thank You Baby" - Matt Brown from the Jar Val label. One of the best so called "crossover" records you are ever likely to hear!

Thats an interesting notion. Any evidence djs did play this based on hearing on the TV series?

It was soul source that pointed it out to me that it was on the TV series, but I only watched it years after first broadcast.

Hey Ed, you do make me laugh, given your dopey posts on here, you are now asking for evidence of others!

here are...

I talked about this to Dave  Rivers about it back in the early 2000s, he told me back then that's where he clocked it ears wise, The Sopranos, that conversation took place about 20 years ago or so, was he the main instigator behind the first plays, I think  he was, but could be wrong but hey.....

 

My dining room every weekend all welcome no shopping trolleys or basket needed

Both hearing and seeing....I've seen Pulp several times and before they came on, sometimes they'd project on the stage backdrop the clips of the Wigan dancer scenes

On a cruise I tuned into the on board entertainment on the tv. There were all sorts of genres on offer, I eventually got round to the Rock &Roll section and was amazed to find Charles Sheffield- Voodoo Working.

It's a while back, 1995, working on a project in Delhi....in the Sheraton bar, a fillipino band was belting out more today than yesterday.

My fellow expats were amazed at me singing along and knowing the words after one or two cobras.

Kidderminster Tesco's , actually saw a young guy dancing in the ailes next to the deli last week ,Saturday evening , to Dusty Springfield, Am I The Same Girl , quite often a good tune played in there , and a few years back just before we where going through the channel tunnel the morning of the earthquake, Cornelius Brothers &Sister Rose ,Too Late To Turn Back Now , played during breakfast in the restaurant of the Ashford International Hotel , then we heard about the earthquake and was told due to the design of the tunnel all was okay , still here lol

Heard exactly the same record playing in the lobby of a Premier Inn about a year or so ago!

Quite often hear quite random bits of northern and other obscure soul in various local pubs near me - Kentish Town / Camden area for some unknown reason (or did - can't be arsed going out any more since lockdown. Lol).

Used to go in this pub near where I worked about ten years or so ago in Clerkenwell. They had this mixtape (or CD I suppose) that they'd sometimes put on and it had this INCREDIBLE 70s / 80s modern soul track on it that i have never heard before or since. I'd always ask but somehow whoever did the mix was never there at the time. I'm sure it must have been a complete unknown because if it wasn't, it was so good it would have been huge and I'd have already known it! To this day, I often wonder what that was...😂

Was in booths supermarket a while ago standing  at the deli and heard John edwards tin man then landslide then as I’m being served I heard girl across the street, I said to the young man serving me that the music in this store is really good to which he says, it’s not as good as your music.

I walk away thinking what’s he on about then realise I forgot to turn off my Spotify when I went into the store, boy I’m getting old

Not exactly unexpected tune these days, but Radio 6 this afternoon Steve Lamaqu had Bari Track playing while he read out a review of a cheese rolling competition! That would have been trippy back in the day on the way home from a niter hearing that combination on the radio 😬!!!

We were in a beach restaurant in Byron Bay in New South Wales last week. There was a DJ mixing lots of random stuff into a variety of Samba and Bossa Nova tunes including Aretha - One Step Ahead, Bobby Womack - I Can Understand It, Cissy Strut - The Meters, Who Is She - Gladys. Nice bits of ska and rocksteady in there too. Lovely!

Not too surprising in a way, as it was during a film called Detroit (came out 4-ish years ago) but for five seconds you can hear a muffled Brown Bombers Wait for me playing at a house party. 

Hate to put a dampener on this thread but on early Monday evening blaring out of a celebrated public house in Doncaster, it was Frank Wilson followed by kicks on the floor from Dobie Gray. Bought a tear to my eye it did. I didnt go in.

Just popped in to Savers Kidderminster, the discount store a shop full of very young staff and blasting out over the shop sound system Laura Greene ,Moonlight Music and You followed by Toby Legend,  Time Will Pass You By and as I hit the till The Flirtations ,Nothing But A Heartache , then it all made sense the manageress say mid 50s singing along to every word , made me smile anyway , didn't know the lady , but I thought good for you girl usually the kids have their noise on lol

Just heard Four Tops/ Supremes "Knock on my door" on TV show Dinner Date ( wife's choice...I'm waiting for Test Match highlights).
