Harlem Shuffle was the first exclusively "soul" related dance I can remember doing. Seems to have been like line dancing when I recollect it now.

From the song by Bob and Earl of course

If you want to know how to do the swim .....

i was reading a web site once about english dances and it said there was one in the 60s called the spaz you can only imagine, and totally un p.c!

This one isn't bad as a song - bit later on though - the 'dance craze' craze must have been old hat by then

I have records with almost all these so-called "dances"

slow fizz

monkey jerk, the cool off seems to be one of the later ones

but the one robb k mentioned has had me baffled for years, the uncle willie, or the willie bop, who was uncle willie in the states ? loads of records relating to willie,

Edited by colsoul

I don't know how "The Uncle Willie" started, or who it was named after.  But, if I remember correctly, it started in Chicago (where I was living at the time).  We had a release by The Daylighters ("Mama, Teach Me How To Do the Uncle Willie"), and by Lttle Natalie, Henry (Ford) and The Gifts("It's Uncle Willie").   Seems like they were using the name "Willy" in songs back in Blues songs in the '30s and '40s (it was slang for the male "member".  We had "Willie and the Hand Jive" from The Johnny Otis Show in 1955.

Maybe Bob A. know the origin from one of his interviewees?

ok we have a pretty good list now , but what about the movements that went with the name of the dance ? and how did they disseminate those moves to the club dancers in the days of very little communications ...

and who was the originator ? prolly lost to time by now.

you could write an encyclopedia on this topic.  :sleep3:
