Popped along to a local pub night running a NS night, accompanied by Brother in Law, who is not into Soul music at all.

Predictable discussion about what constitutes "what a NS record is".....

 

Managed to give him some idea (I hope) by using my own theory, that there is no such thing as a NS record, only records played on the NS scene.

But he accepted the general idea even by throwing names such as Helen Shapiro, Tom Jones, Paul Anka, Bobby Goldsboro, etc.

 

But when this came on over the speakers........I was lost for any answer

A discussion with a few guys outside the pub ensued .....I'm reasonably wide ranging regarding my soul...but I drew a line at this.

bubblegum pop from the late 70s ,only ever heard it on pop radio like capitol played by tony blackburn

My first "disco" , Brown's in Moston, Manchester circa 1969 played it but the playlist was a mixture of soul, pop and "Greasers" stuff...which I happily please this 45 in

It was a bubblegum record from the late 60s, remember it at the time. Absolute rubbish imo, similar to the ghastly Simon Says. If this was played at a night purported to be a soul night I'm shocked. Was it the Wigan Casino pop era? I never went there so hard to judge but am amazed that things like Nine Times Out Of Ten were played. Did it sound good when everyone was "stimulated"? I was going to say thank goodness things are better now but a friend visited a certain club in the south east of England and he told me they played Joe 90.

I lasted 8 seconds of the clip. Only because I missed the stop button on 7 seconds.

Jimmy small weren't as quick as joey small he never got over the wall.

Bloody hell! Quick Joey Small! I've got it somewhere on US Buddah - a mate (hah!) of mine offloaded it on me with a few others many years ago.

 

I played it for a few bars and took it straight off - never again.

 

How can that ever have been judged by the powers that be as a northern soul record? In that case, any record that has human beings on it counts as northern.

 

Maybe it was played just before Dave Evison went for that long awaited ear syringing appointment.

Heard this played about 6months ago in amongst one of the oddest sets I have heard at a Northern event, an odd mixture of 70's pop soul,Motown chart stuff etc,I'd tried to banish it from my memory as he also played something else far worse (yes it was that bad)which thankfully I can't remember

Yes Dave Evison played it at Wigan Mike  - about 1976 I think.

 

I was pretty taken aback to hear it as it used to get played at our local under 18s night 69/70 alongside mostly Tamla , Invictus and Reggae tunes.

 

We've actually discussed this before on a thread in 2007.

Polk Salad Annie was played out in Sheffield last night - didn't sound too out of place in the middle of a few RnB based records - certainly danceable.

I was frequently, but I'm absolutely positive that I'd still have thought it was a pile of shite

1968. Friday nights at the Blisworth Hotel in Northants. Ultra violet lighting on the dancefloor that made the girls in their white skinny-rib tops look good but left you regretting your dandruff. Newcastle Brown so that you had a bottle when it all kicked off 'cos you thought you were hard. Quick Joey Small pounding from the speakers.

Enjoyed it all at the time.

When Dave Evison played that terrible tune at the Casino was he on some special kind of medication at the time (prescription or otherwise)?

Perhaps he was due in rehab at the time.......

I think if I listened to the tune all the way through I might be needing some kind of medication to take away the pain.
