Charlie Rees doesn't trust me watching it on my own; he's afraid I might do something I'll regret so is coming over to watch it with me. Hopefully Dave Cleggy will entertain because I'm not sure Marc Almond will.

I have a feeling I've seen the 'clip' that's available, in fact I think I might be able to quote most of it verbatim... :) Will still watch it though

Got the Betamax primed for this.

Like the clip, although I suspect Mr Levine exaggerating the take off drama for full effect, he's such a showbiz lovey isn't he?

Gotta like him though, he's my guilty secret.

I'll watch with a hangover tomorrow morn.

So Levine discovered the greatest 4000 northern soul records ever in one foul swoop  :g: really ?

I wonder how these holy grails would stand up against all the records that were discovered while he was absent from the actually northern/modern soul scene furthering his career as a high enery/pop impresario ?

Northern documentary versus Big Brothers Eviction Night now that's a tough call

Perhaps a more interesting Levine story would be those of his collection he decided were crap, not worth playing or he overlooked which later were picked up by Butch, Guy etc and went onto become utter classics, Walter and the Admirations et al.

I dont usualy bother much with the telly but will sit down tonight to give it  view.Keeping an open mind till I have seen it

Sure it's been on before? If it's the one I'm thinking of it's one of the better ones and well worth a watch!

Someone stick it on Youtube as I won't be able to see it in Spain

Dave. You will just have to watch storks mate :P

No, it wasn't one I'd seen before but I thought it was excellent

They do Louise!

Did Levine actually apologise ???

Yes, he did. And we got it on TV. He's always privately admitted that he went way too far but it's nice that he's finally admitted it.

Wigan Wigan Wigan...blah blah ffing blah

..I suppose nothing happened in the 80s and 90s then.!?

No mention at all of the longest running allnighter in the world, which has been more influential in the last 30 plus years than the bloody casino ever was.

My two penneth.

They got it Chronologically incorrect with Mecca coming after Wigan and then a massive gap from 1980 approx. till today no mention of Stafford 100 club and other major venues that kept the scene going but overall was enjoyable. Oh Ian D well done ! and the plug for the new film ( Surprise Surprise)!

They do Louise!

Of course they do. I think even Ian would admit that he was blessed to be able to go to the USA regularly at that time. I don't think it would ever be possible to replicate what he brought back from that particular trip. I clearly remember phoning him and him saying that he'd found enough records to keep the scene going for the next two years lol......

After just seeing the full documentary can't say I agree with everything that was said but on the whole enjoyed it, especially where Tony Blackburn tells how he gets asked to autograph a record as Lenny Gamble at Wigan...priceless.

One of the things briefly mentioned was the change in styles of music but didn't mention the oldies verses newies argument that raged in the back of Black Echoes for years and those newies could have been 60s or 70s! This created a big divide but was quite different to that discussed. Also no mention of Mr Ms.

My personal view was he didn't go to far just that the Dinosaurs wouldnt move forward and now the same dinosaurs are dancing to Velvet hammer , Four below zero, Vessie Simmons, Esther Philips ETc ETC

Agree. Missing out Stafford and the 100 Club, having done the founding clubs in a fairly balanced way without too much Wigan, was a mistake.

It went Wigan closes ... The new generation saves the scene ...

Lost it towards the end but really enjoyed it and think it was good entertainment and sufficient detail for non-soul folk that could get people interested.

I liked the look at the cheesy media angles - Wigans Ovation etc.

Northern Soul is cool is the take home message for me

Cheers

I really enjoyed it, didn't think it put us in a bad light at all, yes it missed some bits out, but it was only an hour long. Big thumbs up from me

Well, it wasn't too bad, was it? I think Levine actually apologised, which he didn't need to do.

I would just like to point out that in the numerous times I visited the Casino from London between 76 and 81 with my core blimey guv accent at no time did any one let me in before them - the normal process was just push towards the door get in and then drag ur bag in coz it was still outside - those were the days

Seen it all before but not too bad

Levine is still a tool

Why the drag out waterman is beyond me

Otherwise, if its northern soul....it's cool

I thought it wasn't bad to be honest

Yes, he did. And we got it on TV. He's always privately admitted that he went way too far but it's nice that he's finally admitted it.

Had to laugh when you said...."of course l never took any gear as l was driving"   nearly spat me beer out laughing..........who the f**k back in the 70's worried about driving lol :D

the only worry back then was who had a f**king car  .....or who could syphon petrol

I never knew Coal Miners lived in London!.

Factually incorrect........for a start ...right from the beginning...plenty went north from the south  bletsoe, market harborugh, ect ect........and lastly  what the hell did all those experts know about the scene   "ian dewhirst being the exception".........time they had a show from a punters point of view!!!

having said that    not a bad prog............did ya see those cannisters of  duraphet ect .....

I remember him coming into the Lemon Tree on the south shore ( His family had an interest in the business I think) and him showing all these records in a bag but wouldn't let us pull any out to see. I cant remember if Colin was there but he pulled out 2 and gave them to someone. He then played them the next night and we were just in awe! Those were the golden days.

Why do they drag out waterman?

No mention of the Crossover sound either for that matter which came out of the Northern scene as people grew older, feet slowed and allowed for DJs to play a different type of sound but as someone said it was only an hour long. They could have easily done a series on the subject which I think Northern Soul now deserves.

Someone on here in the Levine thread defended Ian saying he wasn't blessed to be able to afford those trips in the 70,s when 99% of the country went Cornwall or Wales etc. Back on track. Really enjoyed most of the program. No doubt the keyboard warrior's will have a field day as they normally do when anything is shown on or in the media about Northern Soul.

Kev Roberts the Northern Soul Dustman.

PS Kev Roberts you knew me very well & I worked in an office in the Middle of Piccadilly then walked down the street to go and work part time at Global! I didn't work in a factory or mine or Mill! Allrite lad!

I thought it wasn't bad but...why is it the same Talking Heads...could have done without Stringfellow,Norman Jay and Marc Almond. The prog totally ignored the prolific bootlegging and rapid turnover of music. What happened between 81 and the returnees?

who the hell said that in the Levine thread! we all knew he got trips to the US with his family when he was in his late teens! They were rather affluent! Well they didn't live in Mereside! ( An estate in Blackpool for those that don tknow)

I can't remember who but we all knew differently. It will be on here somewhere. This thread is not the place. Sorry Mods

Not bad in parts, for what it was. Nothing new, just regurgitated the usual patter.

Maybe, just maybe one day they'll spend longer than 4 minutes on the soul scene past 1982, rather than just one sentence.

No comment on the "we've filtered out all the rubbish for the next generation to listen to the best of Wigan etc".

so sugar by honey bunch is as amphetamine driven 100mph sound...my arse!

Northern soul IMO was trying to get away from the 444 motown sound so it couldn't be labelled as just another motown copy How the Phook can even these classics have a 444 beat Mel Britt/ The Jades / Frankie Crocker/ Sam Ambrose / Roscoe & friends/ danny Monday/Jerry Fuller/ The Crow/Carstairs larry Williams & Johnny Watson / Sandi Sheldon. matt Lucas etcv etc etc . infact take the top 500 and find out how many have a 444 beat? less than 10 % I would think!

The weird thing is that whenever anything like this comes up, I generally try and spruce myself up a bit and wear some flash gear. But I completely forgot about it, woke up late that day and thus didn't pay any attention to my sartorial elegance. So that was me on a boring Wednesday at the office feeling like shit. I can't believe they found anything usable, seriously. Still, I didn't wince that much thankfully.

I thought everyone came across just great! We thankfully have some very articulate and serious, passionate people from the era who can get the story across the way it actually was. I thought it was 1st class prime-time TV and a credit to the BBC and director James Laycock.

And, yeah, of course they got the film in! Hottest ticket of the year in many circles! Which I think will be a good thing. :)
