DMSC - 23RD August 03 Final Bank Holiday weekend of a hot, hot Summer. Col & I had decided to go to The Drunken Monkey Soul Club extravaganza. So we reserved a room at the Springfield Hotel in Wales and booked our train tickets to Wales in good time to take advantage of the cheaper fares. Of course the weekend of the Monkey was also the last Bank Holiday weekend of the summer so it goes without saying that our soulful soiree

PAVILION, HUDDERSFIELD, SATURDAY JANUARY 12 2002 By Shirley Stewart This is a slightly biased review as this venue is run by my better half, Colin Wood, with the help of the other resident DJs, John Purvis and Eddie Engel. The venue has been running since last May every second Friday of every second month. Previous attendance’s had been disappointing so after the October date we decided to change the soul nite to a Saturday for 2002. Whether a Friday night had been the reason for

The upcoming release of the Shrine Vinyl Lp from Kent Records stirred Andy Rix aka @Andy Rix to pass on his second set of his Shrine related sleeve notes, the ones written for the 'Shrine - the Rarest Soul Label Vol.2' 2000 Cd release, which dovetails nicely with the set of original uncut sleeve notes from the Shrine Volume One Cd already posted in our Article section (link at bottom) Shrine - the Rarest Soul Label Vol.2 Sleeve Notes by Andy Rix 2000 The story of Shrine Records, from i

Soul For Heroes A Soul Sisters Thank You Posted by sister dawn, 09 May 2009 · Well seeing as it's nearly a week ago now since that the inaugural event happened its time to hit the keyboard and offer my personal take on the events leading up to, during and after the first dayer. Soul for Heroes was the brainchild of ex forces personnel Pete Watkins who in December last year decided to help those in the forces whom many felt had been let down by the government, highlighted and repor

Forgive typos please, using my phone rather than a computer tongue emoticon Skegness weekender and where to start? I could begin with a gushing wordy review of the music, venue, promoters, value for money, DJS, committed PROPER soul fans.... but I've done that many times in the past, and somethings are a given, and ever consistent. This is Skeg, the dancers dance, that's what they've come here for, novel idea that hopefully will catch on at nighters across the country. Wierdly, they smile and

Smokey Robinson Live at the Birmingham Symphony Hall by Brian Ellis I must admit to deliberately not going to see many live soul acts as I'm often disappointed as more often than not the artists are never really able to match (or better) their original recording. However since there was the chance (maybe last chance) of seeing a live performance in the UK by a giant and absolute icon of soul music, my wife and I attended the Birmingham Symphony Hall to see Smokey Robinson on Friday night (2

Recently received a great cd from connoiseur collection titled, vsop cd 312 - various artists -smooth soul-the uk collection which to my ears was quite a treat, as 90/00s sounds dont feature that much on my hi-fi at home was surprised by just how good some of these tracks are, and the fact that a lot are uk produced makes me feel a bit guilty of not being aware of them before now!! anyway as said a great cd, and the press release has it right when it says " a powerful o

Thanks go to to Dave Box for writing and passing on this review of a recent nite Snake Davis & The Suspicions, Live at The Frobisher, Wakefield, 22nd February 2003. By opening time at 8pm there were already in excess of 70 people, and the atmosphere was starting to tingle. By 9pm the room was full to bursting and the atmosphere was electric with the crowd full of anticipation. Dave started the night off on a high, with the dance floor full immediately, and t

To the connoisseur, Northern Soul has been around since the late sixties, but to the majority of civilians it was one of the things that happened in pop music between the Beatles and punk rock. For either position to deny the other is somewhat disingenuous; certainly there was more to it than mere chart music, not least because it led to bigger and better things for many who stuck around, but it is difficult to deny that something extraordinary happened in its Golden Age. It is easy now to lau

Site note welcome to the first of a new feature. A lets have a look at members clubs... SOLID HIT SOUL — A LITTLE CLUB WITH A BIG PASSION FOR 60’s NORTHERN IN THE HEART OF LONDON The development of Solid Hit Soul has taken place over quite a few years to where we are now. The “music policy” for want of a better word is quite simple “60’s Northern”. Now that’s not to say that the odd “Crossover”, “70’s” or “R & B” doesn’t occasionally slip through the net, but overall that’s the mai

What’s Going On? - Soul at the Crossroads Prologue — hey wha’s happenin? Originally titled Soul Wars — a New Hope, but I try not to be too provocative. OK, so I don’t try that hard, but it’s what elevates Art above politics. Has anybody, DJ or otherwise, recently thought twice before playing a record, whether it’s actually any good. Whether they recognise a record because they like it, or like it because they recognise it, and recognise it because they’ve heard it thousands of tim

Well this was a good local soul nite, extremely good I would say. Great sounds ranging from some well top rarities to classy well thought revivals, a 100+ crowd, many visitors, all seemed out to enjoy themselves, giving the place later on a great buzz, as always friendly sociable feel, were a fair few record boxes as well, and all to me made it one of the best nites have had there With Kev Murphy and Steve Thomas pulling out the stops.... What a night! Thunderstorms and rain all day and right through this nine hour long knees up under the stars, in a rickety old dance lounge overlooking the sea on Bournemouth Beach! There was supposed to be a balcony buffet frrom 8-midnight but it was blasting down and the spray from the waves was breaking over the building at times! As the roof of the 1937 built Rowing Club leaked generously onto dancers, there was an electric atmosphere and the DJ'S played to a busy floor for most of the night.

This Soul Map of Scotland is a tribute to Shotts Northern Soul All-niters held at Allanton Miners Welfare Hall Lanarkshire from 1987-1991. Founded by Jim O’Hara, Brian Welsh (RIP) and John Nielson. The Road/Journey is integral to Northern Soul. I thought a map could convey that pilgrimage. We used to join the Aberdeen crew when their bus came down from up North on route to Shotts, the bus was packed and smoky with Northern blaring through coach speaker’s with the

SOUL DEEP - A critique by Rob Moss. When the news that the BBC were to commission a series on the history and development of Soul music was announced, the sense of anticipation and excitement amongst devotees was palpable. After virtually ignoring this music, as an art form, for over 40 years, the Corporation was finally going to apply their considerable resources, influence and money to the type of 'in depth' scrutiny and investigation usually only reserved for so called 'mainstream

Soul on Screen : An appreciation of Soul music's portrayal by Hollywood and some future options? In anticipation of the cinema release of “Respect” I thought I'd prompt discussion on previous biographical films, and raise a few suggestions for some future ones. I have focussed on drama-based productions as opposed to the many excellent range of documentaries available which warrant a separate focus. I have also restricted it to Black music which has delivered its fair share of Hollywo

Born to beginnings we cannot comprehend in 1931 and growing up with practically nothing. South Texas Rhythm ‘n’ Soul Review 2 is Kent’s second dip into Huey P Meaux’s rich RnB back catalogue. Much has been written about Meaux’s insalubrious business activities and his abhorrent personal life, so I’ve tried to look past the man and focus solely on the music. Meaux had no colour boundaries and was equally comfortable recording; black, white or hispanic artists in search of a hit and this current offering as with its predecessor reflects this. This CD also contains a broad spectrum

There's much talk about the 70s and 90s on here but little chat about the decade in between when I suspect many KTFers for a wide variety of reasons put the soul scene on hold. As a 20 year old I first started allnighters in 1977 attending anywhere from 15-30 all nighters per year. By 1984 after a 7 year apprenticeship, I was heavily (and I mean deep) into vinyl. Stafford
