Following on from a couple of recent topics, what records do you remember most from your youth club days?

1978 to 81 My 13-- 16  year old self ventured to the local youth club and became hooked on the Northern Soul sounds that some of the older kids were bringing back from The Casino and other venues.I did venture to a few all dayers and local soul nights but the Youthy was the main place until at 16 i started work and a year later ventured to my first nighters.

The youth clubs at that time were massive and you had to que up to get in lock outs were not uncommon.The youth club was populated by several different music factions who all pestered the DJ for their records.The result was a slot of around 15 minutes for The sub cultures of the time which were The Heavy Rockers, Punks, Ska and Mod revivalists, Disco, General Chart Stuff, Soulies.

We always secured a longer spot mainly due to the fact that amoung the Northern crowd were some hard core loons that gently persuaded the DJ to play a few more.The Hammered sounds at the time were

My youth club days were mostly pre my northern days, plus many of the lads/lasses there were West Indian. Therefore these were some of the tracks I remember most.

They used to play Kazenatz Katz at the Oxford Galleries , Newcastle 1969/70 along with mainly Motown and Reggae .

I also remember someone giving it a spin at Wigan maybe around 1976 which was bit unexpected but about power for the course back then.

My earliest youth club memories (music wise) is getting to hear the Drifters "I'll Take You Home" (London) & Mary Wells "My Guy" (Stateside) played as new UK 45 releases in late 63 & the summer of  64.

st alphonsus school disco Dj was one of my freinds big brother and his mate,  1968/9 onwards 6X6 was my favourite but all the usual stuff Carl played all stax, atlantic, motown, so all the usual stuff elgins marvelettes supremes four tops temptations some blue beat, an introduction to soul.

my first introduction to northern soul was when I was about 13 (1976ish) at a local church youth club in Aldershot with peter crampton and a guy called mark simpson dancing to William bell's happy.

My mates and I got into the music from there by getting tapes of another lad called Gary Jefferies and within the year we went to reading top rank dayers and bisley all niter.

the first northern sounds we got into:

Case of tyme  - manifesto/some call it love

Dena barnes - walked out

Dana Valary - interest

Derek and Ray - interplay

little Anthony - better use your head

billy arnell - tough girl (instro)

jewels - we got togetherness

micky moonshine - name it

we also went to the Capricorn youth club in the grounds of our school - heron wood - also in aldershot

Those were the days at Toll-bar youth club in donny ( 1972 - 1980 )  with the regular fights between the local mods/skinheads against the bikers/greasers all against a backdrop of these tunes :

it didn't matter what was played as only the girls danced ( the lads would have got filled in if they tried back then ) ! 

I think the DJ only had about 25 records so he rotated them through the night Lol . 

I took over the decks in 1977 and started to play some northern soul and some classic soul such as edwin starr/Otis Redding/Al green as well as some jazz funk And the lads did practice their dancing by now before going off to the Top Rank and later Rotters in town ! 

Great times but I didn't know it back then 😯

Back in late 67 & thru 68, if you'd been down the youth club, you'd know this lot ...

.... and you'd soon be sending off to get some auction / set sale lists through the post to top up your collection ... 

UK 45's by the likes of Felice Talor, Moses & Joshua, Jackie Wilson, 4 Tops, Temptations, Willy Pickett, Chuck Woods, Eddie Floyd were all up for grabs at the same time (or afterwards off lists if you missed them on release) ... Brenton Wood's "Gimme Little Sign" was a top dancefloor tune at clubs like the King Mojo that summer (before it shot up into the Top 10 of the UK Pop Singles charts) ...

The Moon in Duckinfield as well usually on a Thursday I think though think been on a Saturday too.

Al Devine was the dj at the Moon. Mate [souljer6 on here] lived opposite the Moon.

Yeah, Sunday nights. I probably only started going there on a more regular basis in 72 though. Duckinfield? Never did the Moon, but did the rugby club umpteen times. Souljer6? That wouldn't be Richie Hillel by any chance would it? Knew him from the Pendulum etc.

Yes, Richard. Was in sixth form with him.

Stopped going by '72. 

Went to Rugby club a few times.

Poco Poco in Stockport ran a night on a Sunday as well which was more or less Wheel records so went there too as closer than Ashton.

Pendulem now and again when on Hardman St but regular at MSG.

If you were in 6th form with him, you're probably couple of years older than I then. Last time I saw him was at Stoke, ten or so years ago. If you were a regular at the MSG Pendulum, then I would imagine we must know each other, even if only by sight.

Apologies for going slightly off topic! DMs' are not bad to dance in for a change.  Nothing beats a leather sole though!
