Blues Poetry Introduction By Jacqueline Amos
When I think about the Blues Singer Jacqueline Amos, I often reflect on the times of Cotton Club Comes To Harlem with Lady Blues, Billy Holiday, the reflection sends a light of the times of the 1940's, the horns that plays from the direct spirit of Blues, and the sounds of the pass, which reverts through the mike of Lady Blues Jackie, this vibrant cry, take me to the cotton club brings the applauds from the audience, Jacqueline not only a
What an absolutely fabulous couple of days this was. I'd never been to Ireland before, but everything I had heard about the hospitality of the Irish is absolutely true. Big thanks to Liam and Phil for looking after me, and all the other DJs so well. Saturday night was held in two rooms, and after a little bit of consternation because the decks in the freestyle room were jumping when people danced we got it all sorted. Both rooms were busy at various times of the night, as well as the bar area,

The Masqueraders main claim to fame, to an outsider at least, would seem to be there dogged persistence. Over the 40 years they have been together enough records (about 30 singles plus 3 LP's) to please even their most hardened fan have been issued (and these are just the tracks that escaped from the tape vaults) but they only actually enjoyed national chart success on 6 occasions, the last of these being in 1980.
Although originally based in Dallas, they have over the years traveled extens
SOUL UP NORTH OCT 2006 REVIEW
As usual the 'fans fanzine' is packed with record reviews, interviews, events stuff, CD release's and a whole host of every thing else to do with soul. The October 2006 issue features as usual on the opening pages 'Good Tunes Great Grooves' from Dave Halsall with the likes of The Gems on Riverside, Carol Jones on Mutt which is one I've picked up myself recently, The Four Tees on Vee-Jay amongst others as always alittle background on each disc and values.

Here is a very old review of Wigan Casino I did. We'd stopped going in 1978, and having heard one of Sam's spot's at Bedford, I decided to venture north once more recording the visit in Blackbeat. Usual health warning - please remember I was very young when I wrote this, but I wonder how many cover up's can be uncovered from this article.

A Q&A SESSION WITH KENI STEVENS Written by Dalli Samrai
For all those 80’s soul connoisseurs out there only a handful of British soul artists that stood out, in comparison to their US counterparts. Keni Stevens is one of those British soul artists who could have succeeded where other UK soul artists failed, as his unique voice and production could compete with some of Americans finest at the time. However Keni Stevens came and went without getting the full recognition he deserved even w
Ask any soulie, dancer, collector or dealer to name a city closely associated with the scene and I bet most would say Detroit. Ask them to name a label from Detroit and again I bet most would say LaBeat. Both are synonymous with the scene and deservedly so.
This release from Grapevine is in the opinion of many long over due and rightly deserves a lasting tribute to the joy the label has brought to many soulies for over 30 years.

The term Northern Soul means so.....
A post in the "all about soul" forum by soul source long timer in town mikey that just needed to be lifted
For me the term Northern Soul, means so much more than just the music. I dont mean 'just the music' in a derogatory way.
Northern Soul encompasses the whole concept of the scene. The camaradrie that spills out into our whole life away from clubs and record bars. The type of person even willing to endure some of the lengths we go to,
Major Williams and The Majortones Band
Long time readers of this place may remember this 45 featuring a bit over the years, from my first attempts to get home with the track name in memory from 100 club when first heard Mick Smith play it (and then finding out it was a cover) to when posted that found the group that Major Williams formed in 70s
At the time it was still covered, the group had no internet presence and only got in touch via emailing clubs the group were playing at, eventu
Following recent ups and downs in the promoters of the soul nights in Weston super mare and the fall of attendances in the past year or so, it was with a certain amount of nervous anticipation that I arrived at The Grand Atlantic Hotel in Weston. As I walked in I was met by the ever-genial smiles of co-promoters of Merve (Tin Tin) Parnell and Mick Lloyd also two of the resident DJ'S who were joined by two former Heavenly Blocked DJ's Ken Dunn and Mark Thomas who was unfortunately unable to atten
The BEST decade - a look at 'that' decade
Those of us fortunate enough to have spent our teenage years in the 1960s should be feeling especially sad at the premature passing of George Best. Not just because he was a brilliant footballer or that he lived a Faustian lifestyle " but because he was a true icon in an age that gave us the cultural foundations of our modern existence, and, more specifically, created the music we love.
Best was part of an era that gave us discot
The main aim saturday daytime was to get up to Richard and Regs(Sharron) wedding do at Soul Or Nothing in Manchester in the afternoon, and then move onto Amlwch Nighter later on in night.
Unfortunatly a recent mot result has sort of affected travel plans for the near future, so plan was to get a hire car to do the couple of 100 miles journey. However when tried to put plan into action, a few major problems popped up ! Which meant that any thoughts of getting to Manchester had to be sc

The recent Live 8 thing made me realise just how lucky we are. Unlike those unfortunate millions who happily accept and enjoy geriatric rockers churning out the same old tried, tested and then tried again rubbish at every conceivable excuse for a benefit concert, we enjoy a style of music that seems to be constantly evolving, developing and expanding. Whether it be records you didn't know before, or missed when they were first 'discovered', obscurities on tiny labels that have only recently come
MOTOWN LEGENDS ,HEMSBY, GREAT YARMOUTH 2005 WHAT A WEEKEND ! Following on from our inaugural event at Hemsby last year we were looking forward to this Motown themed event with much anticipation. Last years stunning performances from our acts The Vel-Veletttes and The Miracles (in my top 5 all-time live shows) would take some following. We also released that we were picking up a lot more bookings from the rare/northern crowd than we did the previous year. This could be that everyone who went fr
its whats in the groove that counts errr dunno about that after this weekend.
Several months ago Paddy from Nton who Id done some work for in that past asked me if I'd do a weekender for him with the highlight being some live USA acts, I agreed but advised him I could only two sessions as a weekend of NS would do my head in.
As the gig approached and the news of the live acts became known I was looking forward to my first ever 'weekender' appearance and watc

Had a last wheel out before the imminent arrival of baby Reg at Steve's new night Soul or Nothing. Wow, what a turn out and, without any hint of bias, I have to say it was one of the best nights I've been at for a good while (with the possible exception of the launch night ).
Thing is he's got it just right for the kind of people he wants to attract. A plush venue with plenty of sofas ( for those of us who need
My other half, Shirley, did a review of our first night at the Top Deck Club in Huddersfield last Saturday so thought I'd post it up, totally unbiased of course.

Ernie "Sweetwater" Johnson, who with Eddie Campbell performed as the 60s soul act Eddie and Ernie, died on Saturday 20th August in a hit and run incident at 16th Street and Broadway Road in his home town of Phoenix, Arizona. Teaming up with fellow Phoenix resident Edgar Campbell they became Eddie & Ernie in the early 60s and first cut 'It's A Weak Man That Cries' in 1963 for the Nightingale label, which was then picked up by Checker records. They then had a run of seminal singles on the East
A Friday night in August saw a long over due trip to Lowton Civic, dunno what's going on nowadays but feels like doing something wrong if can't get to an event that always enjoy as often as like. Always enjoy Lowton, the layout, three rooms, dj policy, record bar, cost and location all work together with result always have a enjoyable night there. The nite was a mini-niter, as in was open till 4am, fairly sure was told this was the last one open till 4am to be held, which at a guess is someth

There's not a lot more egotistical than a blog is there? Why exactly would someone want to read about someone else's exploits? Because we're all so sad we like to live our life vicariously through the eyes of someone we hardly even know except as a name and a silly image on
RON HENDERSON & CHOICE OF COLOUR
GEMINI LADY
SJCD 6001
When a new CD arrives in the house, the chances of me actually listening to it immediately are almost nil. John snaffles the said disc for the car, and that’s the last I hear of it until the weekend. However, with the Ron Henderson/Choice of Colour CD I put my foot down and insisted that I be allowed to enjoy the music too….and subsequently the “Gemini Lady” release is one that’s b

SOUL DEEP - A critique by Rob Moss.
When the news that the BBC were to commission a series on the history and development of Soul music was announced, the sense of anticipation and excitement amongst devotees was palpable. After virtually ignoring this music, as an art form, for over 40 years, the Corporation was finally going to apply their considerable resources, influence and money to the type of 'in depth' scrutiny and investigation usually only reserved for so called 'mainstream
Part One: Rhythm & Business, Cultural Imperialism and the Harvard Report Original article by: M.A. Neal Reference: www.popmatters.com Does the soulless sound of contemporary R&B really have its roots in a controversial Harvard study from 1972, an alleged blueprint for the corporate theft of black culture's heritage? This is the first of a three-part examination of how R&B became big business on the way to becoming irrelevant. When Mary J. Blige first uttered the opening l
Couldn't believe it when I heard Charles Walker was appearing in Morecambe on June 3rd just gone. I picked up a 12" of his a while back 'See Me' from '83 and whilst nothing spectacular, it's a pleasant slice of Southern Soul and the man does have a great voice. Well, if he's on my doorstep, it would be rude not to have a gander... That day I also found out on the Platform linked website that Charles Walker was once part of the group 'Little Charles & the Sidewinders!' who are highly re

One Saturday at Rugby Soul Club, I learned that Young Matt Smart (and I mean young ... especially amongst the old fogies of the Soul Scene) is one helluva DJ. Smooth linking, wonderful new stuff (to me) and stuff that I hear all too seldom, including If This Isn't Love by Johnny Bartell(?).
He tells me (Matt, not Johnny) he's been on the scene for erm 8 years I think, (aw bless (don't you just
Middlewich - The 3 Greyhounds - Inaugural Crossover night - Saturday 7th May
We had been looking forward to this one for some time now. There has been a real buzz slowly smouldering and for the last couple of weeks, people have been coming up to us saying they are looking forward to it; Kev the promoter was telling me a couple of weeks ago that he would be happy with 40 through the door but with the feedback we were getting I knew that he easily double that if they all turned out. The house is a mass of scraps of paper with ticket reservation names scribbled on them, a record box overflowing with toons (that is going to have to be whittled down before Saturday), a mad scramble to ensure we have a spare mixer on hand due to a technical fault in the normal one, loads of phone calls to t

Lifeline Lookback After First Year
How it started…….
21st of February 2004 saw the first night of the Lifeline Rare Soul All-nighters. Promoters Andy Dyson and Mick H tired of hearing the same old same every week decided to do something to promote the many upfront, rare, forgotten and thinking man’s (and woman’s) oldies and the 100’s of quality records, both cheap and expensive that dancers rarely get the chance to hear.
Having decided on the venue, Sheridans @ Dewsbury

FROBISHER REVIEW - 30TH OCT 2004

Together with Pam Sawyer, Lori Burton formed one of the better New York pop/rock songwriting teams of the 1960s, although not too many of their songs were widely known hits.Their "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" gave the Rascals their first chart entry; "Baby Let's Wait," also done by the Rascals, gave the Royal Guardsmen a hit; Patti LaBelle & the Blue Bells did "All or Nothing"; and Prince Harold did "Forget About Me."
