Watched the trailer for the Film and there was a clip of a Dancer being asked to perform dancing to Lou Pride in a T.V studio.Then when the Go Go dancers came on he sussed out he was being exploited, and after shouting THIS IS NOT FU****** NORTHERN SOUL He proceeded to headbut the presenter

 

Now maybe thats what should have happened on the one show.

Well, I was one of the dancers, as you all know and loved it. I love dancing, I did then and I do now. I love showing off, I love coming up with new dance ideas and love the notion that I am better than the person next to me and probably look shite. But so what!

The BBC was out of this world. The respect they had for us as a group and individuals was unprecedented. My wife worked for the BBC so have been to a number of productions for radio and TV in the past. Also I have worked for Sky TV for 24 years and used to work on their UK top 40 programme in the 1990’s. Bringing a programme like that together isn’t easy. It went like clockwork. All the staff were professional and even the young work experience bods that looked after us in and out of the building all afternoon were superb ( and some extremely interested in what this music is about). I was blown away with the enthusiasm of some of the young dancers. They seemed passionate about the same things I was when I was 17. In fact last night when the music played, I shivered down my back just like I did when I first heard some of those records in Hull. It was uplifting to see myself, how I was 40 years ago and humbling, really it was. I was chatting to the young Spanish dancer, who told me she heard two soul records in Barcelona and said from that day, this music will be her life. I nearly wept…..then I notice7d the man next to me was stood on my foot.

I know it is not easy for some of you to accept change. That is absolutely clear by some of your comments and so be it. I see myself in these kids and want them to embrace the music for their kids! If there are the odd pair of coloured trouser on the journey…fine, it suites me…and I chuckle. Yes, some of the outfits were animated, but I thought some put a lot of effort into their individuality. One girl told me she designed her own trousers and got them made, just like I did in 1974 when I wanted to be different. It was a carbon copy of what I was doing. Yes, the gentleman with the flowery hat, what a great guy and so knowledgeable about the music. Not a bad word to say about anybody. He was a diamond and treated the kids with the utmost respect encouraging them. Wonderful…..

Ask yourself this, how do you think Lorraine Chandler will react when she sees all these kids dancing to something she recorded 45 years ago? Do pour think she will smile graciously and encourage them or join in the banter on this thread? Let’s ask her………

Oh stop being so ernest. You can probably assume that all of us have an obsessive love of soul music, in one or more of its forms, and that we have spent much of our lives dancing all night to soul music, so we dont need a lecture on 'what it's all about'.

I guarantee that not one person on here's heart doesnt warm at the sight of young folks dancing well, and listening to soul music - but that isn't what the one show was about, no matter how much positive spin you put on it (work experience bods? - spoilt interns after cushy jobs do you mean?)

what we think is shite is that this 'culture' isnt about celebrating vintage black music, or at least wasnt portrayed as such, but vintage british youth culture - of which it has 'carbon copied' (your phrase) clothes, classics and dance moves, as opposed to creating its own, as interesting youth culture ought to.

I've been though all this for years on the mod scene - there's one school of thought that loves good clothes, music and general cool shit, and then another who want to re-create, battle re-enactment style, someone elses youth. You can probably guess which side I was on, not wanting to make everything adversarial as is my english instinct...

the fact is, both camps shared a lot of common ground but I would hate to have seen what I loved being represented on tv as being about reviving some other shit and following someone elses rule book.

youth culture...any culture dammit, gets respect when it makes its own rules, breaks its own ground.

I was born in 1975, so you can imagine what I was up to at 18, and I can tell you, the 'one show' or whatever was the 1993 equivalent, weren't anywhere near knowing about it.

10 years later, when the mod and r&b scene was buzzing with incredible weekly new discoveries that the entire world had more or less ignored for 40 years, the one show was still nowhere near it, it was probably somewhere else filming some clown driving a scooter with lots of mirrors and dancing to green onions. Again.

fair play to folks who do that, but dont say I have to respect it

I turned over by chance and thought great; maybe some clips from the new film that Elaine Constantine has tried  hardto reflect the true wigan scene but was once again disappointed to see  not only Matt Baker with that bloody great big badge on but old footage. I personally  don't care what people wear on the scene or how young they are  as it would be a sad place if we all were to same but why do the media only talk to folk who wear the spencers and full circle skirts?  Maybe we don't look as good media viewing.

Trouble is "The  Muggle Folk"think we all dress in those clothes to enjoy ns.

 To me Northern Soul is felt from the heart when listening or dancing regardless of what you wear.

Not me. Normally I'd sooner shit the bed than watch the one show, I caught it strictly by chance as my dad had it on in hospital. I hear you Penny. So you are suggesting the kids can like the music but must come up with their own dance and clothes scenario and not mimic say 1974 clothing for example? May I suggest in that case that the baggies or Oxford bags that I used to go out dancing in circa 1973 were indeed a fashion trend from the 1920's and copied by the fashion designers of the early 1970's? I was never into flares though...hated them. And the brogue shoe I sometimes used to wear were something from the19th century I believe. The Crombie coat which in 1972 was extremely popular too, with its red handkerchief and red matching socks too. I think the Crombie was over a hundred years old maybe?

 

Work experience bods who are young hopefuls looking for employment in broadcasting. Is that such a crime? Sad that you call them spoilt interns. How derogatory. 

 

No, you don't have to respect anything that is your choice.

 

Clearly you feel I am lecturing, which I do not mean to. I am trying to be diplomatic. Forgive me if I sound condescending, I do not mean to be.

 

But, I would just like to say that nobody here or otherwise owns exclusive rights to music, art, clothing, fashion etc and deem it theirs for infinity. As much as I would like to keep all those cherished memories of me with a spotty face, brushed back hair like David Bowie and a massive Adams apple, at some stage in my life I will see something similar or the same happening before my eyes as indeed it is. So whether you wear a trilby or fedora, it's all been done before, so the kids of today have as much right to wear what they like, whether you like it or not.

For a moment I nearly thought you were right. I am happy looking stupid to some, but to others I am not. It's the story of my life. When I set out on my soulful journey in 1973 one of the things I nearly believed from those around me was that my affair with the music would end and that I would never get to Hitsville or Detroit and cut any of my songs. I did all three. I said I would find the musicians and thank them. I did it in the studio in 2008 and the media was there. It is in the archives of The Detroit News because I wanted it to be. As for the BBC...again, it's tongue in cheek, a little like 'Wigan's Ovation', Lenny Gamble....and Joe 90 or even the cover ups and boots. All part of the history that helps define the true music we cherish. If I need taking down a peg or two on occasions, fine, but that makes me fight stronger and reach for the stars like I did with my session. As for being better than the person next to me on the dance floor, I would hope I am..I did ballroom in the 1960's doesn't that count for anything lol! And I did get booted out the dance competition in Prestatyn which took me down more than a few pegs...but I'll be back. 

 

I must mention you say that good soul music...best expressed in the clubs where it rooted etc, is a fine and admirable notion, but it is not a reality. But part of me shares that concept a little at times. Just like that bottle of 1969 Nuits St. George, why would you want the masses to know it exists, so they can exploit and trivialise it? I can understand that. As for my media head, well, I work in the business and on this occasion I felt my head was saying no, but my heart said it had to play out like this for the bigger picture this time. I have lost two good friends with cancer, one recently....I want that next generation, his 17 years old daughter to discover the passion that her dad once had. It's the least I can do at my age...

 

Enjoy the tape..I wish I could join you and chat about the music. I would be even tempted to open the Nuits St. Georges if I had one to share, if you did drink wine of course. Tell me the first and last track of the tape. I am curious.

Thank you for the list. I will check them out. The Devonnes..is that 'Pick up my toys' by chance? I met Lee Andrews in Philly with Bobby Eli and Weldon McDougall. They took us on a tour of interesting sights like where the Harthon offices where. They saw him walking down the street and we stopped. Priceless. It had been pulled down. Just like the Cameo Parkway studios/PIR complex will be soon to built apartments.

On it goes....six pages of a "mass shock realisation" last night that....for the vast majority of people the northern soul scene it became a good time revivalist scene many years ago. Dancing, dressing up, memoribilia etc.

 

All that good stuff about "underground", something special / "this thing of ours", secret clubs, discovering obscure records, the mystique of the scene, drug busts etc. left port Northern Soul many years ago now.

 

As for all the "I am shocked at people in baggies /  Bay City Rollers clown wear...they are an embarrasment" etc. etc. chat. Wake up, this has been part of the scene for years, go to any of the 50+ soul nights on this Saturday and you'll see it all around you. I honestly don't know where you've all been hiding all this time.....

Just needs a young passionate film maker (degree student no probs) to make the history of Rare/Northern soul in 6 half hour episodes - a collaborative venture with Soul Source and its members. Made for You Tube.

There is a Poll facility on this forum. Members could decide democratically what music to include, what DJ's, collectors, dancers, punters should be interviewed, what questions to ask, what venues to include, blahdy blahdy blah.

There is a members only section. Put initial filming up for comment and critique of members before final edit is decided on.

I know . . . . all sounds too much like hard work.

Why are people getting so wound up about a television program. I'm as passionate about my love of soul music as the next person, otherwise I would have taken a different path in life, because this one is about a life style.  Failed marriage. Tens of thousands spent on records.Sleepless weekends. Knackered at work, knackered at home . Why. Not because it was on this England, or the one show but because I love it. I wear what a feel comfortable in . I listen to what I want to listen to. I attend venues I want to attend. I dance if I want to. I buy records I want to buy. I go in oldies rooms.
