Great call above.

1 for a great album.

2 for not going with the obvious.

Gonna have to put me thinking cap on.

This is definately up their with the best

Impressions - This Is My Country - fantastic!

Saw that someone is selling The Platters - Going Back To Detroit on here today. That's a good album.

Darrell Banks Is Here - love it!

Anthony and the Imperials 'Payin' our dues'

Otis Redding 'Otis Blue'

Four Tops 'Second album'

Jackie Wilson 'Whispers'

Temptations 'With a lot of soul'

Edited by Rob Moss

Garland Green "Jealous kind of fellow"

Isleys "Soul on the rocks"

Esquires "Get on up and get away"

and already nominated but I agree...Impressions "This is my country"

James Brown - Live At The Apollo... a major black music release IMO.

I got my copy of 'Born Again' by jj Barnes out again last week, might be early seventies, sorry about that....But what an Lp it is....

Failing that Bobby Bland - piece of gold on Uk Action, cause I got mine from my mates mum for a fiver while I was at school, and that Lp opened so many doors for me...Strong Stuff!!!

Impossible to have just one.......

Gloria Barnes - Uptown

Darrell Banks is Here

Garland Green - Jealous Kinda Fella

Chris Bartley - The Sweetest Thing This Side of Heaven

Willie Hutch - Soul Portrait

Tammi Terrell - Irresistible

Otis Redding - Otis Blue

Temptations - With a lot O'Soul

The three I am going to name here are right at the mainstream end of the soul spectrum, but they are up there with the very best . . . .

Otis Blue - Otis Redding

Hand Clappin' Foot Stompin' Funky-Butt . . . Live! - Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band

Motown Chartbusters Vol 3. - Misc.

Impossible to have just one.......

Temptations - With a lot O'Soul

Oh Yes !!

I'm talking strictly in a UK release context ;

There was the 12/6d  Atlantic sampler [ This is Soul ] , which was pretty ground breaking at the time, and a subsequent ' This is Sue ' , same price. Maybe not that rare / scarce stuff, but def got me into this mess.

Then the early TMG  / Stateside comps and the Bell Cellars of Soul. The Columbia v/a lp of okeh stuff was amazing.

But, along with the Tempts ' With a lot of soul ' [see above ], the 2 James Carr lps  [stateside / Bell ], are the db's.........in my h.o. of course.

If only one US released LP had to be nominated, it would be this stunning piece of musical artistry:

Don't know about the best - but my most played 60's album is Linda Jones Hypnotised

This album is so good and imo it contains the most soulful line ever recorded

artistics - im gonna miss you

freddy butler-a dab of soul

Isley Brothers--Soul On The Rocks

Temptations--Gettin Ready

Marvin Gaye--MPG

Otis Redding - Otis Blue. The ultimate 60s soul LP.

Freddie butler - daqb o soul

metros - sweetest one

Hesitations, "Born Free" every bit as good as "Soul Superman" which runs it a close 2nd

Kev

There`s gonna be a showdown-Archie Bell + the drells on Atlantic 1969....Quality......

Send my baby back- Freddie Hughes on Wand essential/every home should have a copy.

Just one off the top of my head then it probably has to be ...

James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up

Got the Freddie Hughes that Wayne so rightly mentions, don,t know the James Carr Dave, but bet its good

Willie Hutch: Soul Portrait

classic !!!!

Four Tops album I Can't Help Myself on the 49p MFP label.  Yes I know it's a 70's release but it's all 60's and is basically a reissue of "Second Album".

Fantastic album with no filler.

As said above too hard to pick one, and agree with many already mentioed, particularly withdrawn Len Barry, but thougth I'd give a shout out for this:

Jimmy Ruffin Ruff 'N Ready with the glorious version of 96 Tears on but the whole album makes such a great home play.

Can't give a single fave but lots listed would be up there for me...I would also have to include Bobby Taylor - Taylor made soul, so many great tracks but especially "Don't be afraid".

Tempest  - Would You Believe

38 posts and only 1 mention? Lets put that right and mention it again, The Tempests!

James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up

And his "A Man Needs A Woman"LP, get the UK bell release as it's got 6 more tracks compared to the US Goldwax release

John;

Top call this thread, so many but the one that I repeatedly return to time and time again is Freddie Hughes "Send my baby back" on Wand from 69.I actually have 2 of them 'just in case'.

Gouch

Shouldn't you be fetching another cocktail for your long suffering wife!

Good shout, and you beat me to it. Although I have never actually seen a copy of the Bell LP, I assume some of our members here have one.

I would probably have to take Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man as no 1, but yest James Carr, Freddie Hughes and Otis Blue, all in top 10 I would say.

Sorry boys but Tempests, as great as it is, would struggle to make the top 50, would definitely make top 500, now there is an idea for a book........

no need for me to get cocktails for the wife as they're delivered to our hands by waiters.

I've got the UK Bell LP

like the idea of the book, maybe someone with some in depth knowledge and substantial stock could do this and maybe even add some prices to the listings. What a great idea that would be.....

just having a listen to this  fantastic album

inez & charlie fox mockingbird second release on united artists as it has the track I see you my love

which is not on first sue release

got my copy for 5p from a jumble sale and stateside soul sixteen at same time same price at the great age of 13,(start of an obsession)

Otis Blue, most listened to by me, four Tops Live at The Roostertail also took some hammer.

Tempests for me is definately in my top 50 (folk might guess I would say that), sorry Jock, but do agree with you James Carr should be up there too.

The Magnificent Men's Capitol LP with 'Keep on climbing' etc is a fave too.

The Impressions 'young mods forgotten story' & Darrell Banks 'here to stay' win hands down for me, not only have neither got anything but great tracks on them they haven't even got a bad moment in a track
