It’s fair to say that as members of the rare soul scene - rare generally means expensive comparatively speaking and you know we all love playing them rare bits n bats - so just out of idle curiosity what was the cheapest record you regularly DJ’d with in 2016 that gave you a warm inner glow as people obviously went for it.

When I say cheapest - it wasn’t aired to prove a point as such - but simply because it’s such a great sound everybody can afford. A tenner can still get you a copy today.

Betty Harris “I’m Evil Tonight” (Sansu) played most recently in the second room at Calverley. Next Crossover one Friday 6th January 2017.

Think Betty is also doing a live show at The Band On The Wall in Manchester in the next few months.

G C Cameron definitely got a Curtis Mayfield vibe going on there.

Jackie wilson. You brought about a change in me.

Always finish with it.

:glare:  My cheapest last year was the Foundations  Stoney ground on UNI

          MAKES ME FEEL HAPPY :P:rofl:

What a great question Derek, never consider myself as a big time DJ but I did a bit so apart from the records I got free like Buddy Smith Larry Wright and so on I played things like Hello Stranger The Capitals,  and The CODs Pretty Baby, songs that I think are equally as good if not so sort after 50 pence worth of soul

I think both owe a debt to the Isleys, with that acoustic guitar thang, but I can here the Curtis thing too.

Been giving this a spin, when the opportunity arises......oft overlooked stormer from Hose st

yeah, I play this in my DJ sets in the US, I'll also play Sam and Dave - I Thank You, Otis Redding - Satisfaction and Demonstration, all crowd pleasers and not done to death like other songs by those artists.

Nice one. Anything on Innovation II is good. Steve Plumb wrote a good article on the label a few years back.

Being championing this one since release and a regular play in my 'Dekkas Roots Room' sets , Whitby Weekenders last year etc and radio shows .

Can't believe no one's said the trammps - hold back the night yet!

Classic sound that can be found pretty much anywhere for the cost of a chocolate bar

Johnnie Taylor - Friday night :)

I too have played G.C Cameron, Shirley Brown & the Eddie Floyd mentioned. I also played Friday Night at 100 club but my most consistent 45

and in homage to Bowie was Luther - Funky Music ( is a part of me)

Like both versions Chris, but G C Cameron, absolutely rocks the right room, something happens between needle, mixer n dance floor, that turns it into something magnificent which doesnt happen at home or thru the PC Speakers, been a standard for me for over a year now after hearing Jordi drop it n it never fails mate....

Hi Derek, hope you are well.

A couple I've been playing at 'Caliente' in Peterborough - The Dells "Make Sure" and Marvin Gaye "Want you" (notch it up a bit) - great records, sound great played out loud over a decent sound system, that fill the floor, everyone knows and sing out to + are easy to find and wont break the bank.

Cheers Ray
