Hi all,

Well, its that time of year again

It's 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, which started in 2007, here we go again!

Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers.

You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet!

You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months.

It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves.

It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster!

We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' :D Whatever floats your boat!

With increased diversity around these days, this should be an interesting list!

How about those funky groovers. Are they now providing a rich new seam of quality choonage?

No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year!

So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2013.

Oh... and a Happy (and Soulful) New Year to all!

Sean Hampsey

I don't understand why this record isn't a thing yet, it's on the hard-to-find stock copy of "good loving is just a dime away" and is so awesome. This is my pick, even though I have no influence on anyone:

This has been getting plenty of spins in my household for many a year ( Fantastic )

This is known and wanted by a few(sorry guys). First played by Paul Sutton many moons ago but only a few of us picked up on it.Took me years to find this bugger: From Brazil of all places:

Really think once copies turn up or sold to the bigger boys, this will go massive.

Two reasons I didn't post this.

One is I already posted something you put me onto Wayne & the other is I still ain't bloody got one yet.

Fantastic track.

Yes i see that, thx for heads up. . Glad someone pays attention lol . Did you not try who i mentioned a while back for a copy?

Trouble is a few of the Swedish/German lads are after this now from when i played it at Essence last year :wicked: .

"LETS GET TOGETHER"

ANDREW BROWN

FOUR BROTHERS

(The hardest and his best one!)

A frequent play for me this one, brilliant track

Couldn't get in touch with him. Must try him again but he's not an easy man to track down.

Did get offered a copy by a Brazilian guy who must have mistaken me for a lottery winner though :)

I recognize the backing track on the andrew brown record... What is it? *scratching my head* :g:

Been playing this in the house for years, great pick, never heard it out anywhere, theres another 2 or 3 beauties on the LP that could appeal

My Tip for 2013:

Hot Ice: It's time to leave the disco on the Rage label.......I'm hooked! Brilliant 70's 45er!

Just been getting one, so gonna go with:-

Mike James Kirkland-Together-Zay

Kev

here ya go... the first two tracks are almost Motte Allnighter Oldies over here in Hamburg but have not yet arrived properly in the UK !!! The 3rd track is a fantastic little 60's mover which I hope will break as it has been a firm favourite of mine for many years. Known to collectors & spun at the odd soul night but it never really took off !!! :hatsoff2:

Maybe an oldie in Uk , I don't know , but this is my choice to this year:

Really good start to the thread everyone. Thank you.

Will give it a couple more days and then I'll do a consolidated list.

And don't be shy posting. Just because someone else already knows the track, or has played it (or heard it played out) doesn't mean it's not right to share with the rest of us.

With so many venues on throughout the UK, we can't all be everywhere, can we!

Sean

Oh, ok then Sean; you’ve talked me into it.... :D

My sound for 2013 is this, ‘Billy Stewart - Count Me Out — Chess’

I'd be very surprised if this hasn't had an 'airing' at some venues before, but I haven't heard it out or at least I don't remember anyway - Out of interest, please let me know if someone else has 'championed' this and where they played it, I’d guess Bretby would be a good contender.

All the best,

Len

A mixed bag but all are probably never/v rarely heard out anywhere in any sort of club:

Still Waters - Four Tops

i Finally Found A love - Rena Scott

Blackmail - Bobby Tyalor

Love Is The Answer - Bluesbusters

Lets Start Over - Miles Jaye

Point Of View - I`m Superman (Instant)

Possibly the next United Sounds

+

Coming Of Man - Sunny Day (Right Kind)

Not the best voice, but a Chinese Wall of a sound

+

Joe L - I`m not gonna be worried (Clissac)

Great forgotten Oldie.

Miles Jaye used to get a lot of plays as a new release in clubs, house parties and bars well away from our 'scene'. Roy Ayers in full effect!!

I'd like a copy of that Point of View.

Really nice, I just went looking for a copy then found out it is the other side to "A Fat Boy Can Cry" which I've already got :D

:D Brilliant, ain't it nice when that happens? - You've more than likely got most of my 'plays' but don't realise as yet, I've always been an 'other sider' - Trying my bestest to be 'cutting edge' :D

hi len look at the last horse& groom play list, joe

This one is a cracker and is starting to get plays which i think may escalate this year

REX GARVIN----BELIEVE IT OR NOT

Note the gong intro not unlike the start of So Is The Sun

Excellent - been playing that one for years, and of the course the other side's a cracker too!

I've suggested Cheryl Johnson for the last couple of years, very rare but I've actually seen a few copies being sold recently so maybe it'll have a chance...

Just to prove these things go round in circles - I reviewed this as a' newie' in 1989 or 1990 and said exactly the same as you - nobody bothered though except some of the people buying my fanzine. Is the B side I Gotta Now?

p.s. no I've got this wrong, I reviewed I Gotta Go Now as the A side and said this side was a weird song about LSD

Yep, I Gotta Go Now (up on the floor). Brilliant double-sider.

Here's another that should have gone absolutely massive by now, I had it covered up for a while (For a bit of fun!) I suppose ‘September Jones - I'm Coming Home' took 'Centre Stage' over it, but this is so powerful

'BILLY SHA-RAE - DO IT'

All the best,

and its a real nice tune.............

Maybe one more, not sure if this will be masssive though - It's 'massive' in my record room at least.

Verble Domino - Faded Memory

All the best,

Len

Do people not travel anywhere, anymore ????..Old Mark Etheridge spin from Ponds Forge, Sheffield....Think the venue has been shut a good 6 years !!!

Played it in the early 80ts

Yes Pete flip is I Gotta Go Now which has been known and played on and off.Its a good old Skool sound but the Believe it or Not side i think is more in line with the current vibe of driving beat funky edged dancers and sounds top notch played on a big system.I have it on a LIKE Demo

Little Sister & the Echoettes - Up Above My Head This has had a few plays from Sam, but should be huge in the right rooms.

United Sounds - Its All Over Baby. Not unknown by any means, but this will reach legendary status in 2013....awesome...n I want one !!!

Tommy & the Derbys - Going Back to Houston. Nev put this in my radar, I knew about this but had never clocked it properly, Nev has excellent taste & this a deffo winner - hope I havnt stepped on his toes with this, but needs to be heard n played.

My three...

Ok, one more from me, I'll be playing it at 'The Den' next Saturday in Rushden (May speed it up very slightly)

'Mary Wells - He's The One I love' (Same record as Patti Drew)

All the best,

Len

I think Mary Wells is the original (at least it's written by Smokey).

I think the Mary Wells is LP only (on the My Guy LP). Did it get a single release in any country?

Good call on Tommy and the Derby's. I remember a big fuss on Facebook about it at the start of last year but I think Steve Green is one of the few people who has managed to get hold of one. I think it needs a few more people to own a copy before it can get regular plays and break through. Great record though.
