Line Dancing at the Tower this weekend, as scene on fb....thoughts anyone?

I have very much mixed feelings on this kind of thing, I haven't seen the footage you mention but it's been happening for some time and as I see it can only get worse. I'm very much a live and let live kinda bloke on many things in society in general , plenty of things get my goat that I think why would you want to do that.

     Back to the point in question, I don't get out much anymore, pre covid I watched a mate and his group of friends dancing in a circle, arms waving in the air ,I hesitate to call it dancing to Petula Clark so a double whammy there, I just thought what is it coming to, no!! no!! no!!. Bear in mind this was a group of people with history on the scene not johhny come lately's .When i questioned him he said as you have said above "it was just a bit of fun". 

   I've read many threads on here regarding lets say the dumbing down of the scene, be it Tv exposure, the proms, baggy trousers etc and there seems to be a split between a hardcore group of people  who up vote anything defending the scene as was and rarely see any other point of view, nothing wrong in that , I admire their undoubted devotion to scene they've lived their life on, on the other hand you have the more relaxed attitude where people don't get too hot under the collar about it, both sides I feel have the right to express their view. What I do find annoying is what I sometimes see as those defending the scene of old belittling those with a different view when those people it seems to me have just as much love and knowledge for and of the scene through time spent.

     I guess it's something that is not going to go away, something we are going to have to live with. I don't like it, personally don't think it has a place , it would appear more people as they get older and can't dance as once they did are maybe looking for alternative ways to enjoy the night, taking the scene less seriously.

 Unfortunately the wider public's view of Northern Soul tends to be one taken from the media which always focus on the same aspects, vests, baggy trousers ,circle skirts and four or five tunes, I have got to the stage when someone asks me what music I enjoy I never say Northern Soul, I'll say 60's soul, rare soul, if they then mention NS I'll say yes and try to explain away the media view.

   Just to be clear, I don't like it, don't think it has a place, I just shake my head and let them get on with it, I won't be losing any sleep over it, should I choose to venture out again given the choice I'd be at Ashton Ukranian Club as I used to do pre covid where the true scene I believe is still alive and thriving.

My thoughts exactly - couldn't have put it better! 👍 It's becoming almost too embarrassing to say you like Northern now..... 😢 Have to say I saw the video & thought WTF!!!!!

On your last point, Ashton is definitely a place worth going to, as is Culcheth..and just now, a host of others where the music policy for one is very much diversified, as opposed to the almost commercialized cultural pursuits of the mass attended events

Rob, did you never pop into the modern room at Prestwich whenever The Sunburst Band "Everyday" was played.

I haven't seen the Blackpool footage, but I would imagine a similar dance routine to the Prestwich

one, but on a much grander scale. I don't think anyone made a big fuss about it at the time.

Crowd were line dancing to Peoples Choice "Do it anyway..... "

I most certainly did and know exactly what you mean, and a lot of this crew frequented SITP the first few years...proper funky groove i reckon, not a saddle up and ride yer pony in sight!....er...deffo not any comparison with the tower

No mixed feelings for me, exactly the kind of people and behaviour we went to nighters, dayers, weekenders and soul nights to get away from, still do or try.  I’ve seen the footage too.  Dancing to Northern was to me and will always be an individual thing, athleticism, energy, passion and an element of showmanship or woman-ship. This is just more div madness as the scene sinks into the depths of despair.  I know a lot of decent folk go to these events but this kinda stuff just tars them all wi same brush.

The disillusionment would be intense, if it wasn't for the fact there are plenty of venues were people still do act like grown adults and behave theirselves instead of selfishly resorting to not only just sending theirselves up, but every other innocent fooker in the building.

I was DJing in a modern room in the north west over 20:years ago, in the warmup session someone played a Drifters 78, then in the northern room people were line dancing to what sounded like Rawhide to me. I’d never heard or seen anything like this before at any soul do, it felt like another planet, very odd! So it’s taken off now then? 🚀 😂

Back in the day (late 60's) at our local youth club we used to do a type of line dance to "Harlem shuffle" ; we thought it was the Harlem shuffle!!  Then we did the "Temptation Walk" to the Jackie Lee song, just like the Temps (well nearly). Then someone came back from the Wheel and showed us the true way and our lives changed forever and we never danced in line or with anyone else again.,

It's exactly the point , 'line dancing' in a 'disco' to a white disco record alongside all the other sheep is perfectly acceptable I think ...  but it's exactly the kind of thing 'we' avoided like the plague in favour of obscure soul tunes , in dark dingy halls , full of characters you'd cross the street to avoid on a mid-week morning.

Fair point but it was also inspired by a mod lifestyle, transplanted to Brooklyn in the 70's. The writer of the short story that inspired it was a regular at tiles the flamingo and scene club.

I seem to recollect people in the States line dancing to Don Covay's It's Better To Have. I remember thinking at the time "that'll never catch on here".😒 

And also, as far back as 1966, there was a specific dance created called "Function at The Junction" - that Shorty Long had a hit with. That is more or less the same as line dancing, so it is hardly a new thing in black culture, although clearly it is a radical and unwelcome departure for "Northern soul".
