What a fantastic evolution from Kev Roberts ridiculously titled

World Northern Soul Dance Championships - real name Blackpool Dance Competition.

An individual who is actually convinced by the title.

Oxy and Moron come to mind as she explains that Northern Soul dancing is not about choreography, whilst using choreography to teach.....an Oxymoron indeed.

Before admin say something, this is a product review not a review of the person.

Interested in your thoughts....perhaps the individuals who judge the dubious event, care to comment on her World status?

if you gonna post/reference these videos on here, can you link or embed them from the social media sites rather than post the complete video up

as we may get hit with copyright takedown requests, that is unless you do have permissions to publish them

as such gonna have to take it down shortly

so can you edit and add a link or embed

thanks

Better off buying a few half decent unknown tunes than spending that much cash on a correspondence course.

Unknown tunes in 2025 ? That’s going to be tricky.

  • Popular Post

Guess that depends on your level of knowledge and how many genres of this wonderful music you’re into. Good  example the other day when a mate of mine played this at the Dalmeny Weekend. Never heard it before and it cost me the princely sum of £4.99 to get a minter. Anyway always going to buy records over dance classes.

What the hell is that all about ?  Would like to see someone teach Mick Francis or Mick LeBrewin how to dance

Dancelikeachump

Ridiculous!

Clown event crowns her world champion, she believes it and thinks that justifies her charging a hundred and fifty quid for lessons? Preposterous!

I've met Sally a few times before the 'championship' and she certainly seemed a level headed nice person & I do think that dance classes can be used to encourage the wallflowers new to the scene to get onto the floor.

If she's determined to make her web offerings work I'd prompt her to look at her responses given to FAQs as they are confusing and potentially even misleading.

It's also best practice to make the annual sub significantly cheaper than 12 x monthly subs.

(Just my previous experience in digital marketing with a leading genealogy company.)

Seriously though:

The 'world championships' are no more than a marketing gimmick for the Blackpool Tower weekender, legally someone 'winning' that competition has no more right to be declared a world champion than anyone winning a similar dance off anywhere else in the world.

It isn't adjudicated independently or  scrutinised by any professional dance body, it matters not how many take part or believe it to be a real competition, it isn't.

The comments about NS being freestyle with lots of 'set moves' is hokum IMHO also - those set moves are merely a result of others copying another dancer they've seen.

I've actually seen a instagram video this morning of one of the country's absolute best dancers (not just my opinion either) being ridiculed for not doing 'NS dance style' -it's this very sort of 'dance classes' - pretending there are defined sets of 'moves' that can be classified & categorised -that caused those ignorant comments.

Just my twopenneth but NS/Rare soul should be both absolutely freestyle & best done in as dark an event as is possible. High time video makers & social media grifters were positively discouraged from invading our hobby.

Jesus H.....What with the avalanche of bootlegs..."vinyl only" .....Ai......and now £150 dance classes ........the scene cannae take it captain....we need to break the dance algorithms......beam us up Scotty.

B & S gave tunes like this a lot of press, despite the fact it chart topped rnb in the States, but did nothing here.....tons of great fjvers out there that have been totally forgotten and never mentioned....probably all a bit guilty of shortsightedness i suppose.

Wow I'm gobsmacked I love to watch a busy dancefloor with everyone doing their own moves but all in time with the beat and tempo changes etc.  Surely if this is the new thing northern soul line dancing will be the next thing.  😁

I never really took the dance contests seriously since people aren't exactly trying to show off or perform to others on a soul night...? It's largely an expression of your connection to the music and any compliments are just a bonus.

Mick, that already exists anyway. Video evidence from one of the tower sessions was viewed by everyone last year....and the folks taking part said it was just a laugh....ffs, plumb the depths on top of all this dance class garbage.

Anyone know what her playlist is , I'm sure we all have our own favourites, I was wondering how her's compares to mine, cheers Stephen

Surely at our ages, it should be Northern Soul Tea Dances?🤣😇

Julian, well it was 20 + years ago!, Tony's Empress before niter started, load of pensioners having an evening tea dance, cafe with tea urn, sandwiches etc, and soulies putting their holdalls down waiting for pensioners to waltz off down the stairs...

Now we're them🤣🤣

Totally forgotten, or never even known in first place. I played this superb record at the Uckfield soul night three years ago and completely cleared the floor. Not one single person dancing to it.

Can’t argue with the fact there are loads of great cheap soul records.

I bought lots of chart soul in the 70s that probably got bypassed by some wrapped up solely in the Northern scene. Nothing wrong with that you like what you like. I had a discussion with a mate a couple of months ago about such records and would certain records have been played if the the artist wasn't at that time known for a 100% pop record.

The Tymes had Miss Grace which maybe resulted in their later releases being overlooked. I won't post a link  but I've always had a great affection for God's Gonna Punish You by the Tymes, won't be to everyone's taste but I think it's a great vocal and a lovely tune.

Is that because they're not rare enough , no matter how good the tune is ?

I never said there weren’t ?

I was replying to a post where somebody mentioned unknowns ?

there will be loads of great cheap semi known records that get ignored by the masses and mostly played at home or shared via online  mixes etc.

I've been dancing and going to nights for about a year now, As much as I agree that yes, It does help people to get the confidence to go out on the floor by showing them something introductory, I don't feel like that should cost £150.

I have had some young people at nights come and ask me how to dance, I showed them a basic step and they asked me what next? I said "I'm not gonna show you what's next because then you will just dance like me", I think the way people dance is like a fingerprint its individual to you and I personally enjoy seeing people who do something different with the way they move and express themselves to the music.

This is true especially with youngsters like myself, There is so much out there to hear I have barely scratched the surface.

This dance lesson bol**cks infuriates me as much as when I see kids about 5 years old been coached by wanna be football coaches. There is no need for either.

The payment plan buttons look enticing, but the privacy policy, terms and conditions are an unreadable minefield! I think I'll leave it.

She isn't a good enough dancer to charge anything. She probably learnt like the rest of us by simply watching others, practising at home.  I don't think many care how others dance as they are more often than not more concerned with what they are doing.  There have been some terrible dancers over the years and they have simply been left to get on with it by and large.

The best ones are they that seem to be dancing to a different tune than the one being played!😇

You’re describing me Julian! 😂

im the one dancing like that gold robot out of stars wars,I think it will take more than 150 quid a lesson to sort me out😂

There are loads of records I don’t know that doesn’t make them unknown.  Do research talk to people.

i’ll leave this now.

Correct!, dancing the way an individual does, is in tbeir own dna...everyone is different for that reason.

Teaching is a total irrelevance: except to those who want to make money and exploit people.

Oh....and if that's the case, get a license/doctorate....and pay your taxes😉👍

I find this a personal affront really.

After hours of training and dedication to my art I recently only managed to come 97th in the NE Lancashire championships.

The judges felt that my reinterpretation of the Black Wednesday 1992 sterling crisis through the medium of dance was not quite what they were looking for.

That Kev Roberts knows nothing !

Ugh. Totally cringeworthy. Although the lass can dance, she has no soul. Northern Soul dancing has never been taught - it’s picked up by observation. For any beginners reading this, pay your entry fee, buy a drink or two, sit down and watch. Tap your feet to the music and if you really like what you hear, get on the dance floor. For those of a nervous disposition, practise the moves in your kitchen. Listen to the DJ if you want a playlist or just go on YouTube if you want good music and dance videos. Steer clear of Spotify and buy a record deck, some used compilation LP’s and then a few 45’s from the USA. Money is for blowing on records not dance videos!

I should have paid more attention to Dave Withers wisdom in the Wigan Coke Bar 😂

Frank, It's what's in yer bones, what you feel, but absolutely...we all began by observing...then we created our own moves, which is probably what we've always been comfortable with👍

In the olden days you were given three back street blues for two quid and a gentle push in the direction of the dance floor. You danced non stop for about six hours. Bingo, you got it.
