First was a Mod allnighter Lemon Tree Club Scarborough '87?? One of the Tony Class ones. I was only 14! Can't remember the first record but someone was playing Ray Barrettos' Soul Drummers in a near by bar or hotel foyer before we went in!

My first, The Attic Doncaster,

was a large dancehall built above the co-operative stores, big venue,

can't remember year, first tune heard on entering, Willie Tee, walking up a one way street.

hi the 40 th anniversary do was last month for the attic -co-op ballroom i spent 8 hours at donny on a boxing day waiting for it to open, ferkin frozen , trudging the streets, until a doorman (god bless him) at the DANUM HOTEL let us in to the reception area to get our circulation back , had a good time when we got in ---last niter i ever went to without a car. about 18 months later was walking up those bloody enormous staircases when loads of coppers ran past! i turned round and again spent a couple of hours ferkin freezin on the streets of donny while the big raid was on until they pissed off and again had a goo d niter albeit a lot less crowded, a few months later it was closed.i ended up going to a dog track in earls barton 100 miles down the m1 for good block up,

could have been later just remember it getting raided few lads from my way getting caught up in it regards johno

reading your name took me back to an all niter at the dungeon about 1968 travelled back with a johno (wore a levi leather jean jacket )and marsh from donny they knew big and little cogsy and chris farrel also from donny could you be the same johno?

The Torch opening night, no idea what 1st sound was "off me 'ead" like in later weeks I was standing in the que to get in when they played "Hit & Run" and the crowd outside started a stampede to get onto the dancefloor, lifted my mate Phil right of his feet !!!

My first allnighter was Belle vue not sure which year

The first tune that I heard at Bisley was Purple haze- Johnny Jones . I remember being baffled at the time but really excited...

& the last record that night was Walter Jackson -Where have all the flowers gone ?

The two people you mention are very much embedded in my memories, Pete 'ginger' Balance, rip and Mick Mullins, have spent many many and many a happy hour with them at various venues, went to the same schools etc, although they were in the next year up. Me and Pete lived 100yds (sorry metres) apart, Mick lived in the next village, (just by the river). Wow someone else who went to Shades of Green 76 or 75.   Now that was a classy club!!!!   Can you remember the DJ other than Kim Gold?

Too many beers since then as I can't decide whether Bisley (probably), was the first all nighter or if it was Wigan.

Yep Steve, he was in one of the main photos taken outside of Wigan featured in Blues & Soul and often reproduced since.

Funny enough my main memories of the Cap, are watching the second Ali/Frazier, a dodgy pinball where if you wacked the machine in the right place it nearly always gave you a replay, scotters all over the playground and the Matador by Major Lance. 

Casino november 1974 got in remember thinking it was expensive didnt realise edwin starr was on did half his set and then started again coz the people at the back couldnt hear him.still got the badge with his face on from that night

Place called The Golden Disc in Keighley in 1966 & just turned 15 - 1st & only time I went there. After that, I was at The Twisted Wheel almost every weekend - very occasionally went to The Plebs (Halifax) or The Birdtrap (nr Burnley), but more often the Wheel - it won hands down for me. I was there just about every weekend from 1966-70. Told my parents I was sleeping at a mate's house - she used to say she was sleeping at mine...…...happy days!

Wigan Casino Dec 76, went with a mate from work Louis from Buxton because non of my local mates were allowed out all night 🙂 Records I recall were Ron Holden and The Reflections Adam and Eve.

100 Club 1983. Records that stood out were Johnny Caswell’s “You don’t love me any more” and Eddie Bishop’s “Call me”.

I had a very steep learning curve on dance floor etiquette that night  i.e. do not bump into older Scotsmen when dancing too enthusiastically.

Mods revival allnighter which was on the last friday of aug 79 , i was fifteen ( i looked about flippin twelve , Lilly bryant , meet me halfway! Which was flippin loud! And the vibration and the clapping, and the heat , took me by complete surpirise, ito say i was excited doesnt really describe it , took ma jacket off and only left the dancefloor once , when our kid dragged me off, to buy me a drink,  back i went til it the three before eight, ( never seen milk that blue). Didnt return til i left school the following june,  then every week bar one sat night when we turned up and the place was closed! Didnt attend the last allnighter or the very last one , couldnt face it really! But  it changed me , for the better i believe, introduced me to people i love to this day, some i still miss, and some who taught me lessons when i didnt recognise there were lessons to be learned!

This was a 'different world', the only tunes I knew up to that point were the re issues of the day on Mojo, Chess & Jay Boy, played in the youth clubs.

First time I saw lots of folks with eyes like saucers, chewing gum- puzzled at first, but I soon caught on!!

Wigan Casino 1974 and what a night it was. The hairs on the back of my neck still stand up whenever I think about it. I remember being very excited on the way to the Casino and I was not disapointed.

 

Yep Wigan was brilliant, me and another guy thumbed it from macclesfield to Wigan priceless memories. Who would do that today to go to a club

I think (?) most of these were Torch sounds except for the last 2 - Epitome Of Sound & Tobi Legend I believe were Casino spins.

My first Nighter was Wigan Casino September 1974 coach from Wolverhampton with my mate Neil "Brew" Brewin. he was only 15 at the time.

Later than many, Peterborough Wirrina in '85 I think, age of sixteen . A group of us came down from Nottingham in a van - Simmo, Crewy, Tucker, Jo90 etc. It was in the big hall and well attended.

I can't remember a single tune (and not for the obvious reason), just because I was taking it all in. It seemed so mysterious, intimidating and intoxicating at first and the music was ace. I was probably one of the youngest in there and looked it.  

I do remember being surprised by the 1970s and more recent music played, in my head being trained at Rob's Records and on Kent/Inferno etc LPs. I didn't appreciate that sound music then but of course here we are nearly thirty five years later and I'm into all areas of the style and associated music too.

Arrived at the nighter a young Mod, left the all-nighter focused more about Northern Soul after that.

By about '87 I was struggling to find local nighters in Nottingham and ended up in the early House scene for a couple of years (while still collecting Soul) before getting back to Soul as things seemed to take off again from about 1991.

This event was promoted by Mick Maguire, Billy Whizz’s younger brother and I think a guy called Skip who was a popular local DJ and who tragically passed away a couple of years later.

My main recollection of the night was foolishly passing up a copy of Darrell Banks Is Here LP ( £2.00 ) for a bootleg copy of Our Love / Open The Door To Your Heart. What a div! I was only 15 though.

Seem to remember The Flasher being played a few times.

A couple of months later my mates and I became regulars at St Ives.
