Yet another cringe worthy image of the scene is on main stream television. My wife and I together with my sister attended goodyears soul night in Wolverhampton on Saturday night, which we do from time to time mainly to see Ted Massey's spot which was very good as usual. My sister has lived in Australia for over twenty years is on holiday and loves the music and attends soul nights in Perth not far from her home, was very surprised to see people wearing 1970`s style clothes at the event, something that does not happen in Australia. The question she asked was why do they do it, that is one I would like to know the answer to my self having lived through that decade myself and always considered it a decade that style forgot as been quoted many times and totally agree with. When I go back to work tomorrow I hope no one has seen it and asks, do you wear that type of clothing at the soul do`s you attend here`s hoping.

 

Wonder if they wear retro Speedos in Perth.? Just for the record,i fully endorse a healthy breakfast and lifestyle.

Get why people cringe at what my late friend Chris Buckley called "the circus folk"....but it doesn't bother me if people choose to dress "retro cool"

Most of the folk who wear vintage stuff that I know are regular niter goers and at events week in, week out.... and are very good company

The bloke in the ad is a well known old hand it turns out and good luck to him I say

Every weekend no matter where we go we see people in retro clothes, I couldn't care less, if that's what they want to wear good luck to them, the one thing that stands out in the advert is the smile on the blokes face he's enjoying himself, unlike some it would appear.           Never mind the music look what they're wearing.

Why does TV pigeon-hole the 'Northern soul lover'? Well their point of reference in most cases is a 1977 documentary showing people in vests and baggies. We're busy shouting

''but everything's changed we're different now''.

Obvious next question from the producer.

''What music do you listen to now, are current releases played on the northern scene''?

''We still listen, collect and dance to most of the same records that we did throughout the 7Ts Mr Producer''.

''So what exactly has changed''.

I haven't worded it brilliantly, but we're a product of our own making, yes we might wear slightly different clothes, but if you were a spinner or a dropper in your youth, wouldn't you still do it if you could now? Bottom line is, nothing much has really changed accept in the really upfront venues, and even in those the bulk of the music played is from the 6Ts. 

Why would a TV producer see us any other way than in a 'This is England' style?

At the same time, people are still reliving the days of the Wigan Casino (etc). You just have to look at the volume of threads and posts on Soul Source to see that's true.

 

If even the more progressive die-hard keep on about "the old days" what are people outside of the scene supposed to think?

It isn't what is being worn in these adverts.  The fashion depicted was fashion for a short time mid 70's, it soon passed for another.  Why does everyone who wishes to portray the soul scene want to depict the certain type of clothes being shown when it isn't the case except for a minority.

 

It isn't the adverts that is the problem, it isn't those in them but how the scene is perceived to be.  You only have to go on other social media outlets. The ridiclue being shown is far worse than here.  I am all for anyone wearing what they want but I do wish they would stop using the image they are using everytime they wish to use the scene to sell their product.

All family, friends and work associates who know I love the music will think I go out at weekends looking like a chimney sweeper. No problem with anything that promotes the scene but it always comes down to the same thing.

I'd rather they hadn't made this advert, but it pales into insignificance compared to many of the photo's on here in members albums. That is where the true horror lies

The media/advertising industry need to give whatever movement/craze/trend they are stealing from an identity.... If it were mods they would have use guys on scooters... For Northern Soul it's baggys, solatios, vests and Brutus shirts.... Right or wrong it's what the general public recognise as the Northern Soul "uniform" - just like a mod in a parka. For an advert they need to make this obvious. The same guy dancing in Sta-press, a Ben Sherman and Brogues to many would have just looked like a skinhead, and as such confused the "message". As the father and son involved are the real-deal I say good luck to them....

I was quick to tell him that at more progressive events, especially on the Continent, things were very different, cool even. He'll have seen this commercial by now and will probably be drawing a similar damning conclusion. Shredded wheat for me was largley inedible unless you put tons of sugar on it. We were strictly a sugar puffs family, with porridge in winter.

I can remember the odd baggy person around 99 to 2000.The mod look was prevalent and before that the pegged trouser.Before that there was the Kevin Webster tache,double denim and dm shoes look.The baggy looked as though it was consigned to history and it popped up again in its own Jurassic Park! can anyone go pre 90s?

Like I said earlier, the trousers aren't as bad as the flared skirts, ankle socks, ribbons and tattoos that the women wear. Where the hell did that look come from? And where do the flat caps come from? The only people who wore them in the seventies were our dads.

Plenty of girls dressed like that at nighters in the mid 70's and it didn't look too bad on a young fit female, don't remember many girls with tatoos though.

They looked alright at the time, otherwise nobody would have worn them!

I remember a time if you didn't have a pair of wide trousers with front pleats you were a bit of a square and unfashionable!

Clothes from the middle ages must have looked really smart in their time, but look silly nowadays!

I don't think older people should be wearing them now, it doesn't look good anymore!

Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, Harringtons - these are smart clothes, timeless, that can be worn with anything really.  They have been around for 50 years or more.  As Chalky says, the baggy trouser era lasted from 1972 to 1979, then vanished.  I'm also at a loss as to why they have to keep focusing on a relatively short period.

 By the end of 76, baggies had well gone, with the Mecca crowd.

For some reason the Wigan crowd started even wider ones for a couple of years or so.

In the main it what was in fashion at the time, and not Northern Soul fashion.

In the early 70's it was the Skinhead/Smoothie fashion that was worn by the Soul crowd.

Towards the back end of the 70's, l started wearing Lacoste, Polo Shirts etc.

In 2015 still wearing Lascoste every now and than, and have done all through the last 35 years plus.
