Original Vinyl Only Do..not Quite

Fair comment, but surely sticking it on youtube is/was always asking for trouble? Do you see where I'm coming from, or am I too wide of the mark?

Asking for trouble as in making stuff available for anybody to have as an MP3 and therefore diminishing the tracks kudos?

There are lots of tracks that are rare and in the hands of a small number of DJ's that are on Youtube but I'm not aware that this makes a significant difference to that part of the scene as a whole. Those that want to seek out the upfront scene will continue to do so no matter how many tracks are on Youtube.

Just a view, mind.

Mp3s have a place.  For listening to at home or on an iPod.  Not being played at a soul event.

 

But, I don't mind if CDs are played as A) they're a physical format you can actually look at and hold and B) many great unissued tracks are on CD and deserve to be danced to in my humble opinion.  Just to add, I mean proper well compiled and produced CDs like those from Ace/Kent et al, not 2.99 ones from the local garage.

Here's a question, might be a daft one: How come all this sacred music from vinyl has ended up as MP3's. Don't shout at me for being ignorant.

 

Not a daft question at all IMO. Its a double edged sword with mp3's and soundfiles youtube etc.  We all request them as easy way listen to new sounds etc, bring on holidays but would have loved for some of them to be left in original format personally. Can miss the time myself where punters had to travel to hear a specific sounds played on vinyl. It takes away bit of the mystique of a record no doubt about it. 

 

For the artists themself easy access must be purely positive though as more people get access to their work.  Ive also gained loads of knowledge from Souclub, refosoul here, mp3s etc so can't moan to much myself Im afraid  ,

The Rose and Crown - they have live bands, comedy, the lot - loads of pubs done up into 'gastro' pubs (even the Checkers), it's turned into quite an interesting place. Even the Bell is now trendy (full of w*nkers from Stoke Newington in red trousers and sandals).

 

Even went into the Checkers and there was some bloke playing Northern(ish) on vinyl - reissues unfortunately but all definately changed in the last few years.

What about the rare records the ones, owned by the few.The ones we all wait to hear ,but seldom do, there the ones that I don't care what its on as long as its played. Fact is I've stopped at do's all night waiting to hear that 1 track but only a few have the record ,so there seldom played I say a bit of all

Look at it another way, if people didnt hunt down rare vinyl, we wouldnt even ever hear such tracks, so instead of complaining that we dont hear them enough, be thankful to hear them at all.

If djs could play any format, such tracks would no longer be rare and there would be no point booking the dj who has them on original.

Those djs would lose the - already only marginal - incentive to find new tracks and we'd be left with all the short-cut djs, playing the same stuff.

Did you ever think that maybe it's the excitement of only occasionally hearing that rare or new track that can only be played off an original that is the bedrock of these scenes?

We are still glowing now with the excitement and mystique which was generated over the years by exactly that practise.

You might say 'but its about the music', but the music was universally ignored untill djs and collectors took the trouble to uncover it.

It seems reasonable to take what achieved that and stick with it no? It works.

Everyone at a do, more or less, has the not particularly impressive ability to identify good songs and play them in a sequence, the filter that helps to narrow down the field to select the most suitable dj is how much, and what quality, of original vinyl they have.

Like everything else in life, you should get out what you put in, whether that investment is time, research, money or whatever. If anything, it seems that a soul dj gets very little out compared with what they put in, you know, compared with a trance dj or simon cowell.

Life doesnt work out that way but lt's at least be thankful that our world is still clinging on to such a principle.

There are two types of Soul fan and two entirely different scenes .

One is into soul with a passion and gets thier buzz from hearing sublime musuc the other just seeks a good night / weekend away on the lash with people who they feel comfortable with ,opposed to the nutters on the lash in town !

There will never be a coming together of the two ,they both play by different rules and as long as they all enjoy what they do ...let em get on with it !

Food for thought, say you were on holiday abroad and it had 20 bars/clubs in the town and one of them played soul all be it of a laptop which bar would you most likely frequent the most & would you have an opinion the fact it was of mp3 rather than vinyl, we,ll assume the person playing them is foreign with no knowledge of the scene and has just got a random playlist that ranges from classic oldie to the ultimate rarities, Would you come back from your hols thinking that bar/club was a stroke of luck or think i,m glad i didnt go to that place as they didnt have a clue and they didnt play of ovo vinyl !    I had a much better time listening to Abba & the Beegees What i,m getting at is I reckon most would be suprised & happy to be offered it in any format as it somehow comes under different rules although the music is the same, Here it would be debated and opinions would fly left right and centre, so possibly for the masses they have the same attitude that its just music and a good old social knees up with a musical genre they like which is fantastic, It doesnt dilute the scene at all cos if you want that underplayed/rare scene on ovo you will seek it out . you can have 1,000 soul nights with only 5 of them playing rare ovo and you,ll see more or less the same faces at all of them, EACH TO THERE OWN enjoyment is the key not politics the OVO flag will always fly high and proud but just in minority numbers
