Well , looking through that list theres some quality there mixed with some right dross .............It had taken me nearly 31 years to forget The Camotions FFS , never mind Judith Durham frusty2.gif

Out of interest how did you compile that list mate , theres a few in there that IMO are truely forgotten but others like The Invitations I would put down as an overplayed oldie ? .......Good list none the less

Ooop's the Invitations was a mistake.... however, they had a little played version of the Belmonts track which I really liked on MGM. The list is really just from memory. Many of the tracks, particularly from the middle period of Wigan, may have only been played for a few weeks... and dropped from play-lists because of the bootlegs. The Nikki Blue track is a prime example. I still really like this and have dug it out recently and played it... it still sounds good to me and may do well as a re-activated oldie. I'm sure it is a lot rarer than the book price.

Diane Newby's version of the Cooperettes / Chubby Checker track is still the one to have and another that could do well.

There are also a few others that were dropped because large quantities of the track were found... E.J Chandler... a good a record as anything ever played at Station Road. Jimmy Smiley is another that turned up quickly... and was legitimately re-issued in the states on Camille... however, these turn up a lot less often than the Gait original.

It's easy to look back now and target records such as Grand Piano Company and Harry Betts as pure pop, but are they any worse as some of the more treasured instrumentals? Don't forget the reaction from the crowd when things like this were played.. they almost blew the roof off. We were naive kids but we knew what we liked... 30 years on and much wiser, but do we have to crap on the records we liked then because they are out of favour now?

The raw energy in tracks like Manifesto and the power and gusto of James Coit... unforgettable. Are these not soul records... I would argue they most definitely were and are well worth another spin. As is the Leon Thomas track... a superb 70's track that was unforgivably underplayed.

Rambling now... so much to say and so little time...

I Am with you on this Tim there are some tracks on the list that are considered crap by some but I think they are more in tune with people than some think, Some of the tracks on your list have not been heard or seen out for many a year but on hearing them again will or would bring back a flood of memories for some even to the point of getting people up to dance as they did back then. I thought that’s what this thread was about remembering tracks long since forgotten. Wish I had a memory like yours but just reading some of the tracks you have listed has got me reaching for my past so thank you Tim.

Wigan really was my era, so I do tend to put on the rose tinted specks a bit... well quite a lot if the truth is known. At one period I didn't miss an all nighter for over four years... Friday and Saturday's. Being youngsters, the oldies night held a real fascination for me as I was too young for the Torch, Cats and Va Va, so it was a real education, nevertheless, it was Saturday night that was the big one. Hearing not just Richard play new records but all the DJs play new records was always exciting.

There was most definitely a place for Beverley Anne, Judith Durham, Holly St. James, Outsiders (Lonely Man) et al... and I will remember the pop/soul with found memories... but I can't be sure records such as the awful Seeds psych babble, Tim Tam or Joe 90 were ever really needed, warranted or indeed wanted.

One thing that always annoys me when Wigan is spoken about; is Richards part in it. Again, I think too many people don those rose tinted spec's... sure he played some great records, but also played some real stinkers... Russ, Allan, Pep, Pat Brady, Soul Sam and Keith Minshall all played an integral part of the make up of the Casino and this diversity of DJ talent made it the place to be. (Sorry Wigan DJs if I missed your name in the role call... its getting late...)

Favourite records include Johnny Henly (another forgotten gem), Frank Lyndon, Freddie Chavez, The Delights, Lester Tipton, New Wanderers, Eddie Foster and hearing Bobby Paris Night Owl the first time at the oldies nighter.... oooohhhh shivers

The b-side of this ( I Can Give You Love) is pretty good as well, a lot of people I mentioned it to recently hadn't heard it

Can't remember how big they were only that I loved them, don't think they were overly spun at the Casino.

Woman’s Liberation by the Topics on the Castle label. I remember being up on the balcony by the snack bar and asking someone what it it was. Bought it soon after as it was available as an original issue. Great tune and one you never hear played out. Don’t think it’s been put on any compilation LP or CD to the best of my recollection. Wondering if the group is the same as the Topics with a string of good records?

According to biographies the East Coast Topics last 45 was ‘76. This one is ‘77 and West Coast and a N. Sanders heavily involved, Nelson Sanders?  Discogs does put them together as the same group but as that is user input it is hardly surprising.

The Topics - Women's Liberation was compliled on CD by Goldmine, on C'mon & Dance 2, then Trippin' On Northern Soul and later Golden Memories of Northern Soul.

The Topics - Women's Liberation was compliled on CD by Goldmine, on C'mon & Dance 2, then Trippin' On Northern Soul and later Golden Memories of Northern Soul.

Thanks for this. My CD collection needs updating or at least playing it a bit more.

This was a regular big spin, floor shaker circa 79 seldom heard nowaday, got booted, originals are v scarce. dont think ive ever heard this played out since w.c
