Favourite line

Recommended Posts

This is a favourite because it’s so laughably awful that whoever wrote it deserves a slap coz it’s so bad and a handshake for getting away with it. Jeez...

‘I don't want to see a ghost,
It's a sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
And watch the evening news’

Having got that off my chest, my true favourite line soul-wise will always be:

’I’ve never had a single lesson,

All this time, I’ve been guessin’

However, I could pick any lines from the verses in that song, the writers (Lewis - Lewis - Farmer) must have been pretty pleased with it 👍

Ashley Ingram is responsible for that, i believe ?      he made a fortune from the Desree album and the FORD advert

Not a Soul record but for sheer jaw dropping nonsense you can't beat T Rex's Rip Off. The lyrics throughout are brilliantly awful.

Here's a flavour -

In the moonlight
Fighting with the night
It's a rip-off
Kissing all the slain
I'm bleeding in the rain
Such a rip-off

Rocking in the nude
I'm feeling such a dude
It's a rip-off
Dancing in the dark
With the tramps in the Park
It's a rip-off
Such a rip-off

“My iron in the fire had an iron in the fire”

”some dude had bust a hole in my spare tyre”

Don Covay ‘ somebody’s been enjoying my home ‘

And with the luxury of Philip Mitchell on back up vocals ad libbing !

HAS to to be... 'I move your pictures from my wall, and I replace them, both large and small. And each new day finds me so blue. Nothing takes the place of you. I read your letters one by one and I still love you when it's all said and done. Coz nothing takes the place of you. As I write this letter it's raining on my window pane. And I feel the need of you, because, without you nothing seems the same. So I'll wait until you're home. Again I'll love when when we're all alone. Coz nothing, no nothin takes the place of you'.

Soul

Dells - When your youth and beauty has finally gone

Make sure you have someone who loves you.

( Good advice to all )

Non Soul

The ultimate put down in a pop song.

Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street

You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it
When you know as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

Hehe..i know, the whole thing is mental isn't it?..my elder brother was a big T.Rex fan when we were growing up, he'd play albums like The Slider constantly but I could never really understand what Marc Bolan was on about, although Bolan himself probably didn't know either to be fair..

A bit later on I got massively into Jimi Hendrix (and illicit substances) as a teen and hear things like this, from 'Axis Bold As Love'.

Anger, he smiles,
Towering in shiny metallic purple armour
Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him
Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground
Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted,
They quietly understand
Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready,
But wonder why the fight is on.

Soul wise, id have to choose The Dells 'Its All Up To You' .

It's hard to pick a particular line though to be honest, the whole thing is magnificent from start to finish and was the first record I heard that sparked my passion for Northern Soul music.

Contours - "First I Look At The Purse"

"I don't care if she waddles like a duck, or talks with a lisp,

I just think I'd be better of if her Dollar bills are crisp....

'cause first I look at the purse."

Champion Jack DuPree - "Junker's Blues" (1940)

"I was standin', standin' on the corner, with my reefers in my hand...

Up steps the sergeant, takes the reefers out my hand...."

The Jive Five - "People From Another World" (1961)

"My heart started beatin' fast as it could beat,

I stood there shakin' from my head to my feet,

I didn't know exactly what I should do.

When a monster said 'Which way is 5th Avenue'?

I hollered 'Save me-e-e.... Save me-e-e, I hollered Save me, I hollered Save me,

from The People From Another World!"

Actually, the nonsense lines spouted from the aliens are actually even better, but I dare not try to spell them! 🤣

Specials - Night Club - always made me smile - "I won't dance in a club like this, All the girls are slags, And the beer tastes just like piss"

Joe Jackson - Monday -oh so true - "Once you clock in you'll take any shit"

Constellations - I didn't know how to - every time I danced to it - "Tiny bubbles about to explode"

.

1. Don Covay - Bad Mouthing

"You think you can get any man you want just because you look good

But It ain't how good the car looks baby, it's what's up under the hood"

2. Bettye Swann - Be Strong Enough To Hold On

"The flame of love is dying, and your heart is turning cold

I can feel your love fading in the night

Have you forgot, how much I loved you

Have you forgot, how she did you wrong

You were weak enough to love me, be strong enough to hold on

She's just using your little children to try and get next to you

Oh I know that's only her excuse, to come by here, to see you, and to call you on the telephone

You were weak enough to love me, be strong enough to hold on"
