As ITV are planning a special documentary this summer to find the Nation's favourite Motown song we thought it might be interesting to do a Soul Source version.
All we need is just the title & artist of one track & if you want a brief description as to why.
Know it's not an easy task to narrow it down to 1 track as there are so many to choose from but massive lists will just be a nightmare.

The thread will run for about 2 weeks & then we'll do the totting up & announce the results.

Be interesting to see how the 2 polls compare.

Away you go.

  • There were too many perfect Motown recorded songs to pick just one.  I'll say "Ask The Lonely" by The Four Tops -today.  Tomorrow it might be "Crying In The Night" by The Monitors. or "Truly Yours" by

Originals - Suspicion.

Because it's a record which has it all imo. I'm not a huge Motown fan but I love this.

Peter

Originals. Baby I'm for real. Just destroys me with the passion and emotion that is faultless in its delivery. Steve

I think I always know the answer to it because after approaching 50 years its pull as the epitome of music ambrosia remains undiminished.

Stiff and serious competition from many quarters including Originals, David Ruffin, Gladys Knight, Temptations, Four Tops as to be expected but to me the best, and therefore my favourite, is.....

Miracles - Tracks of my tears.

I hope to God I never tire of hearing this.

There is another thread to discuss that.

This is purely our thread for the poll so can ask to just keep it to title, artist & brief description.

My favourite. Odyssey - Battened Ships from the Odyssey album on the Mowest label.

A little mainstream, but;

If I had to choose just one to take on a desert island it would be the Four Tops' Reach Out. For nostalgic  reasons as well as well as it's  quality.

TAMMI TERRELL

LONE LONE LONELY TOWN

BLEW ME AWAY WHEN I FIRST HEARD IT ON THE MOTOWN CONNOISSEUR'S ALBUM  AND STILL DOES TODAY

COULD CHOOSE AN ALBUM FULL THOUGH

KEV

That David Ruffin track would be in top 5, but my top one is Smokey's Ooo Baby Baby simply cos IMO it's one of the best records ever made.

What Does it Take, Junior Walker,

Reason, I just love it.

My first second and third favorites have allready been said so Still waters - the Four tops because its brilliant

EDIT dozy sod me missed the point :wicked:  Miracles - Whole lot of shaking  - and why not

Marvin Gaye - I want you - Tamla

Isley Brothers, This old heart of mine. Superrrrb.

Originals. Baby I'm for real. Just destroys me with the passion and emotion that is faultless in its delivery. Steve

That's my choice every time, floors me too

Smokey & The Miracles - The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage.......could just as easily sit in the "Songs that pull at your heartstrings" thread.

Frank Wilson - Do I Have To Keep Hearing This Song...

Seriously, Brenda Holloway - Reconsider would be my pick of the 30 or so really rare or unreleased tracks in the Motown Northern archives that have been on the circuit for the last decade.

An impossible task but this is one that will always be there or there about as it's a tune I've loved since first hearing it,it was also played at my brothers funeral.

Gladys Knight-No One Could Love You More Tamla Motown

My choice would be the B side to CLOUD NINE -TEMPTATIONS/. WHY DID SHE HAVE TO LEAVE ME, BRILLIANT, CHEAP, and not so sure that many people know it. JUST PLAY AND FALL IN LOVE. ROD

Martha Reeves- No one there

Four Tops " Ask the lonely", a superb song, often copied never bettered.

I can listen to this song a hundred times in a row and still find something new in it such is the power of the emotion when Levi sings !

Rob

I'm with Jaco - The Tracks Of My Tears. Beautiful.

I was gonna go for I'll Keep Holding On by the Marvelettes on Tamla, but that's cos I've just bought it.

Two of the best for me

The Originals. Im someone who cares.

Smokie Robinson. Cruisin.

Two awsome tunes.

We'll just count the first one.
Mod team...

four tops  ask the lonely ....... reduces me to tears ...

Brenda Holloway - Just look what you've done

Just tells a heart wrenching story.

Ooops sorry - missed that - but I was not wrong and it hasn't been screened yet :o)

Difficult innit?

I have so many, narrowed it down to 2:

Spinners - I'll always love you

Contours - just a little misunderstanding

first one is just superb, fabulous vocals (of course) with a perfect arrangement

second one has it all,  been in my top five for well over 30 yrs, the piano intro is irresistible !

Temptations...just my imagination, faultless vocals from Eddie..
